    I think too many teams at the high school level try to copy NBA and college teams who place almost no emphasis on offensive rebounding. Truth is, most high school kids don't shoot it well enough to be successful only getting one shot at the basket. They would be better served by following the model of teams like Houston.

    This is one of those examples where this is effective at the college and high school level. The spacing and 1-5 talent in the NBA would eat this up plus the more you play a team like this, the less effective they tend to be. This is also what makes March so much fun, so many radically different styles and just 40 minutes to figure it out.

    The futur of basketball is 5 versatiles wings, who protect the paint with multiple help and then recover with a good close-out. You only give up 2 pts after dribble, and if possible, contested.

    This channel has convinced me that the NCAA is rooted in defense and hustle. The NBA GMs are so far behind the curve on this. Year after year we see lottery picks bust and even had drafts were we don’t see starters or all nba team guys drafted. Some were along the way there is a massive flaw in the system. I would like to know the owner of this channel opinion.

    • @bball767
      @bball767 Před 3 lety +5

      Look at who the majority of the top players are in the NBA. They're the guys with elite tools, elite feel, and able to do multiple things at a high level
      While the draft misses a lot of quality players every year, often due to different biases. They are usually rooted in ideas of trying to acquire the upside of a high level player. A star is worth so much more than a role player in the NBA (10th best player is worth 2 of the 25th best player) that it often leads to teams aiming for those tools more than feel.
      This is why so many quality players are missed all the time, that and that NCAA and NBA games are just so different it's hard to translate performance

    • @fenzelian
      @fenzelian Před 3 lety +1

      Well don’t forget luck. It’s impossible to fully predict the future, and most pro athlete prospects in all sports fail to reach elite status.
      The biggest issue is bias based on how the players look - read “The Undoing Project” by Michael Lewis to learn more about that. Everybody looking at prospects compares them to other players they look like, especially their skin color, rather than how they play, whether they know it or not.
      Also the statistical connection between scoring and wins is not as clear in basketball as is in baseball, and there are some flaws in PER and other popular advanced stats that misevaluate how scoring contributes to wins.
      I think one dream is to be able to use advanced ball and player tracking to improve defensive and off-the-ball analysis of players - that might for example shed some light on why Zion Williamson for all his apparent natural ability and scoring efficiency can’t push his team above a losing record.
      But the gist is that everybody is trying to win the last war - and what that means now is everybody is trying to out-Warrior the Warriors from a few years ago, but without Steph Curry. It’s not the only way to approach the game.

    • @TheMrSuge
      @TheMrSuge Před 3 lety +2

      The reason the NCAA is rooted in defense and hustle is because of all the guys who go to the NBA early and all the guys who transfer. Coaches don't have players long enough to teach them all the fundamentals of the game. I once heard Calipari say exactly that.... that he only has players long enough to teach them to give effort and play defense.

    I love watching a Team play lock down Defense!
    I don't want to sound like an Old head, but, I don't think anyone would argue that there is a serious lack of emphasis on Defense in almost ALL Levels of the Game these days.
    Just like this video says, there are always gonna be exceptions, but very few teams bring a focus on Defense to each game.
    Loyal Chicago, St Bonnie, Liberty, San Diego St, Tennessee... these teams bring the pressure and play 40 minutes of Defense.
    Should be an interesting Tournament for the teams that focus of Defense and Rebounding.

    • @g.williams2047
      @g.williams2047 Před 3 lety

      Lock down defense doesn't really work other than 3 or so teams. Those you listed? All of them lost in the first round, 3 were blowouts, and Loyola beat a GT team missing it's best player. Besides Houston, Virginia, and Villanova (maybe not this year for those last two) who else is remembered for lockdown defense in the big game? Sure, Liberty can play great defense and beat up on weaker teams, but only power 6 schools can seem to win with a defense-first mentality.

      Because they are so dominant on the boards, it forces teams to rush their offense from the get go. Cincy's HC said it's like starting the game with 12 fewer possessions. Even when UH is not making the 1st shot, they usually get another chance. But when they are hitting shots, it gets real bad for the other team real fast. In the AAC Championship game, Cincinnati was in "hoist mode" very early. At one point UH was scoring 1.3 points per possession. UH shot 56% overall, 48% from 3, and 86% from the line.

      @@aaronkapper5897 When a team like Houston dominates the defensive glass, it leads to their opponent only getting one shot per possession. Then if they dominate the offensive glass too, they create more shots per possession. Over the course of the game this can lead to a team taking about 10ish (picked arbitrarily) more shots than their opponents. It's hard for the opponent to make up all of these shots if they can't get offensive rebounds, so the next option is to shoot earlier in the possession more often. It's the shorter possessions in an effort to create more shots that leads to the rushed offense.

    I clicked on this video as a Memphis Tigers fan to tell you I don’t need to watch this to know the only reason Houston is elite this year is because of the Offensive boards and extra shots. Boom sorry I didn’t watch the video, tomorrow after my shift I’ll watch it to give you that fat view

    They’ve played only ONE Kenpom top 25 team - Tech in November (including their run to the Final 4). That helps when you can’t shoot.
