    Brought back memories of the colonoskopy I had last year.

    I've gotten really attached to my 2013's cheerful quiet thumping, oddly enough. It's especially nice in the middle of nowhere, tooling through the forest. I was all set to replace the exhaust at first, but now I doubt I ever will.

    If you can learn to live with the "chirp" at idle and low RPM it is much more pleasant than riding with a aftermarket exhaust in my opinion. I have a DG O-Series exhaust on my '05 and it is too loud; and the HP gain was minimal. I know there are inserts that will make it quieter, but I would rather put the stock exhaust on, than invest more money into something that just makes it sound different and not enhance performance

    A healthy stock pipe should chirp on both generations. Contrary to popular belief, chirping is a sign of a happy KLR. My 2003 wasn't doing it first when i bought it at couple of years old, then it came alive after few hundred spirited miles.
    My semi-educated guess is that there was some mellow-ride deposit inside that i burnt out in a short while. Don't be afraid twisting the throttle whenever it's reasonable to do, she'll like it.
    Thanks for the colonoscopy, fascinating. :)

    From what I was told a lot of guys want to do the frugal exhaust mod to make the hole bigger so it breathes better and gets more power. Not just to remove that first baffle!

  • @jmshaw357
    @jmshaw357 Před 9 lety +2

    I think the 'tweety' sound is usually on the older bikes(pre- 2008). I removed my baffle by cutting the center out of the can with a hole saw and then wiggling it back and forth a million times til it broke off deep inside the can and it finally came out. The sound was a tiny bit deeper, not much louder than stock. It looks much like the standard pipe but instead of a little 3/4" exit hole it now has a 1-1/4" exit hole. It was kinda difficult to drill the hole out--I made a wooden shim out of a wooden dowel that kept my hole saw in the center of the can.

    The comment I've heard consistently on my 2018 KLR is "Wow! That bike is quiet!" I wouldn't mind a little more sound but I don't like the obnoxiously loud stuff. What I've found out (at least on my old Yamaha) the stock exhaust is actually best because it was engineered to give the best performance through all revs. Changing exhaust usually means adjustments on the carb as backpressure is changed.
    I find it rather odd how there are two plugs on the bottom that you remove and then whack the muffler with a dead blow mallet to clean the screens out. All KLR owners should check the muffler clamp and header bolts. They have a tendency to back out and should be checked often. I couldn't believe how loose my muffler clamp was, which was why mine was popping on deceleration.

    if you want to increase the flow 15% in the stock exhaust just pull the rear freeze plug out.

      I liked my Lexx, - good looking pipe and did the job for a while, but #1 I got tired of repacking it every couple months and #2 after three re-packings, the components started getting brittle and stripping out...Back to stock and I'll never have to repack again.

    I cant say if they made changes at all to be honest. I have an 08 klr bought new in Nov of 07 and it has never "churped" like a lot of folks have heard. Could be certan runs of exhaust builds with internal flashing from welds perhaps? I ran the stock exhaust for the first month then changed to Two Brothers until the aluminum where the maintence bolts are to replace the the packing tore completly out and blew the end cap and core out on the highway. The stock exhaust now has about 20k of the 40k

    I have absolutely no " Chirp" on my 2013!.............. I have a bit of deceleration " Farting",...... But that might go away if I do a jet mode......... Not sure if that would make any difference as well. I kinda like the stock sound but what's a good muffler to get if a person was to upgrade?????? Something with some growl but not a " Harley" sound............. Great videos!😎👍👏👌✌️👋🍻🇨🇦

    i have a 94 KLR with 26000 miles and it chirps! its the most annoying sound when i am out cruising around, and i hope to find a quiet fix to replace it with. I dont want loud pipes "loud pipes save lives!" and annoy the s*%$ out of me.

    • @budgettacticool8593
      @budgettacticool8593 Před 6 lety

      TheCharillz23 my 2013 doesn't chirp but I just hate the stock sound. I need a slip on because I will be happier with it while riding but I won't be happier with it annoying my neighbors when I start it up but I spend majority of my time on the road opposed to idling in front of my house. Loud pipes can be annoying, but they definitely make stupid/distracted drivers an extra heads up that You're around.. I'm ordering a slip on right now, trying to figure out which one I'm going to get.

    • @danmanthe9335
      @danmanthe9335 Před 4 lety

      I don't believe the 'loud pipes save lives' line of thinking. Most of the sound is directed towards the rear of a bike and generally speaking, threats come from in front of the motorcycle. One thing loud pipes do for sure is close riding areas and piss people off. Don't get me wrong, I love the sound of a v twin with a nice exhaust but I like being able to ride more
