Not just the Soviets, Russians have had a long history of music that absolutely slaps. A lot of the Red Army Choir songs are taken from Russian folk songs that predated the Soviets.
The power of music is that it can break through language barriers. I don't know Russian, but the only thing I know is that this music is Glorious and Majestic.
I sang in a church choir in the US for several years. Once, an elderly alto turned to me during choir practice and said, "You have a nice bass sound. It sounds Russian to me." I had never received such a compliment. Later, we had an 80-yr-old, blind guest maestro for a big number he had written. After practice, I introduced myself and thanked him for helping us with his hymn. He said to me, "You should stay here. They really need your voice." I was flabbergasted.

My grandfather lived in east Germany and got interrogated by the stasi for saying something against the government and my parents fled to the west. Pretty interesting to hear those different experiences under the communist rule

I´m from Czechoslovakia and i Love it! It´s a proud Soviet song, but also proud song of Russian / Slavian soul. It is simple "over the top song." I got it on my cell phone as a ringtone and sometimes I can see the panic in the people´s eyes (I´m working in Germany:D).

Well, not everyone. One of the choir apparently stayed behind to stay with his newborn child and wife. The dancers are also still alive. Hopefully the unit will be reconstituted, but it's going to be a while until they get this good again.
