  • Are you tired of selling books on Amazon and getting little sales? Well, you’re in luck because we’re continuing our Self publishing books off Amazon series. Today, we’re going to focus on publishing on lulu. So stick around for this step by step tutorial.
    I know I’ve done an upload video for Lulu.com before, but they’ve completely updated their site to make things easier, so I wanted to do a brand new publishing on lulu tutorial. Let’s get started:
    Now, maybe you’re not quite ready to upload to lulu. Perhaps your cover is not quite ready. Then check out this video right here where I show you how to use Canva to create a book cover. Or you can check out this video that CZcams picked out just for you.
    I’ll catch in the next video and remember to write right.

    Loving the publish off amazon play list series! So important to get back up plans in place, like a prenup, great if things go fine but essential if things go pear shaped.

      Oh so true(about off Amazon, not necessarily the prenup...lol) Anywho, even if you and Amazon live happily ever after.. going wide will still help you with broadening your reach. You're audience is everywhere, so shouldn't your books be as well? (and in every format, but that's a topic for another series)

    This came right on time . I will be uploading a ebook later this week. For some reason my Amazon account is locked. It's a blessing in disguise. I'll look at all your other post about publishing on other platforms beside Amazon. From your channel and a few others I've learned what can happen with putting your eggs in one basket even one that's as big as Amazon. Thanks again.

    • @KeithWheelerBooks
      @KeithWheelerBooks  Před 4 lety

      Yes. The bigger the basket, the bigger the risk. I’ve seen authors’ 5-figures a month business come to a screeching halt, by KDP closing their account. Sometimes without an explanation.
      Remember, it’s their sandbox, they just let us use it.

    I think I will change my avatar Keith, because I am back again. I have several books with Lulu (Joined in 2010), and I always loved their publishing choices, including hard cover. I also had the most wonderful coffee table style cover for my Runaway Princesses Original book around 2012. It cost $64 to purchase, which is prohibitive for most buyers. But, the finished result was superb in quality with silky pages and strong beautiful cover. I still have 2 copies to treasure. Nobody else online did this style back then. Now Amazon has a hard cover option, but it is limited. I think Lulu has the edge here and should get a lot of support from Indie authors who always keep writing books by the bucket load. I am in the process of ordering a custom made cover from MIBL (Ukrainian artists) because of their present situation. They are brilliant and thus far I am happy with the sketches. I will see how that progresses and if it helps sales. It is my latest book, an historical fiction with a male voice (super easy!) and a typical knight with problems arising quicker than you can say "Jack Rabbit". He is adorable and faithful to the king and does complete his impossible mission. He also gets into a bit of trouble with beautiful women in pursuit of him. Maybe I should do this one on Lulu. I will have to pay my bill first... Sorry, it is Sunday and I am just recovering from something that made me stick to my bed for a few days (not Covid). It has been resolved. So, I am just happy I guess. I might watch this again as I was distracted by myself.

I did the research starting back in early March 2019 and found them to be a reliable source that put out good product based on feedback from people like yourself. I am now in a quandary as to whether this is still a good idea in 2020/2021 because of recent feedback about scams, low quality since they re-vamped their processes this year. Would you consider doing a new video on them if possible to give folks an update as to whether or not they are worthy of our time? Thanks for any advice and consideration you might have.

    Just published my first book with Lulu, it went live yesterday. Can't say that my experience with Lulu was all that stellar. Their lethargic response time, both for support and proof delivery was exacerbating, annoying, and wholly unacceptable in my opinion. Seriously, they can only manage 1 email a day? And more than week from order to delivery, even with paid expedited delivery? I had trouble with their ISBN/Barcode being blurry, which they apparently couldn't fix. Rather that appearing printed it looked like a low resolution image. In the end I said oh well because I didn't want to stretch out the release weeks longer. Was I really expecting too much? I'll probably try a different publisher for my next effort. Live and learn I suppose.

I figured I can drop the publishing name thing. So confusing looking at the barcode thing on how big do they want it on the outside? You do not have to put the words imprint Lulu. As for what to put in the copyright page, you need the title, author name isbn, copyright year and the (c) icon.

    Hi Keith this tutorial video is great. Thank you. I had a few questions if you do not mind my asking. I have published with KDP in the past, however, my current novel I would like on Paperback and hardcover so I'm considering Lulu and this video helped me with that. My questions are:
    1. The barcode, will I have to download that before the cover is completed so the cover can be made with the barcode included? My cover will soon be made and I wondered if I should jump ahead at least to that part to help save me from backtracking.
    2. If I sold the paperback on amazon through KDP will the hardcover sold from Lulu link to the Paperback on Amazon?

    • @KeithWheelerBooks
      @KeithWheelerBooks  Před 3 lety

      1. Yes, you’ll want to add the barcode to the cover. Just download the template from Lulu and there will be a spot shown for where the barcode should go.
      2. Yes(this is actually what I did with my YA novel). The paperback is with KDP and the hardcover is through Lulu. Once the hardcover is available, just message KDP and ask them to link them.(this only works if you have world distribution turned on in Lulu.)
      Also, note that only your covers done through Lulu will need the barcode added to the cover. KDP will add it themselves. That said, if you have the cover with the barcode on it, there should be a box in the KDP setup where you can select that the barcode is already on the cover.
      Remember that you’ll need a separate isbn for the paperback version and the hardcover version.
      I hope this helps.

      @@KeithWheelerBooks Yes your comment helped a lot. Thank you so much! I have a designer who will start to work on my cover within the next few weeks and when I saw your video it made me realized that I should make sure that he has the barcode to add to the design. I tried to nab it earlier but I have to upload the file first and I'm not quite done editing yet.
      I do have one more question (sorry) I noticed that they have the dust jacket option as well as the Hardcover Casewrap, do you have any experience with the Casewrap? The cover would need to be made much different, no? I know I've seen books like that, but never considered doing one myself most likely because I never thought of it until I saw it was an option.

    A couple more questions. Knowing that Amazon doesn't allow opening of multiple KDP accounts, do KDP allow you to sell on Amazon through Lulu's distribution? I'm asking this as it's kind of like opening a new account, but just not with KDP., rather Lulu.
    Also, if someone gets banned from KDP, do KDP also remove their Lulu books that are also on Amazon? Just curious to know this 😊
    My 3rd question is, is it possible to advertise your Lulu books (on Amazon) using Amazon ads?

    • @KeithWheelerBooks
      @KeithWheelerBooks  Před 2 lety

      Great questions.
      If you publish through Lulu and put it on Amazon using global distribution, this is totally fine. In fact, if you do one version of the book on KDP and another version(perhaps hardcover) through Lulu, you can ask KDP to link the two versions onto one listing on Amazon.
      KDP and Lulu systems don’t talk to each other, so if you get banned from one, it won’t affect the other.
      Unfortunately, the only way to run Amazon Ads to a Lulu published book is to open up an Amazon Sellers account. This costs a monthly fee and requires you to act as the distributor and therefore process all the books yourself.
      The workaround I do is publish the ebook and/or paperback version through KDP, create the paperback or hardcover through Lulu, have KDP link them all together, then I can run ads to the ebook version(because I published it through KDP,) but customers can still click on the paperback/hardcover versions that I created through Lulu.
      I hope this helps.

    Is there a place to download the templates for cover and interior requirements prior to this upload process? How do you embed a font if using Canva and Affinity Publisher? How well known is Lulu to consumers as a marketplace to purchase books compared to Amazon? Are there terms of service to be followed like Amazon? Amazon is frustrating for low content books and seems to have unwritten rules like you cannot use the word calendar for a planner or you cannot use the word planner and journal together in the title and so on. However, you don’t find these rules out unless you are apart of low content FB groups where people share and ask questions. Then you cannot update your titles if they publish your book and then come back at you and say you are not in compliance and your bookshelf becomes cluttered. It is just frustrating that Amazon doesn’t clearly layout what you can and cannot do on their site but rather expect you to read into their terms of service. Amazon seems to be closing accounts left, right and centre these days. I am hoping Lulu is a much more user friendly experience. I love Lulu, for a long time as well, since 2010. Now I see Smashwords and Draft2Digital are uniting and the competition is out there. I see a problem with Audiobooks and Findaway Voices being far too expensive for the ordinary Indie author publisher, who truly cannot afford their fees. So, please consider TTS (Text to Speech) platforms for audiobooks. This method of bringing our books is way too late in the industry that needs to break away and allow this style of speaking, not simply for the "ordinary reader" but for the heart of reading for everyone. Not everyone can read well, for various reasons and having a text to speech recording would help them enormously. They can listen and enjoy what everyone else reads.
    I have tried this on a Mac and was astonished at its ease to record and really good vibes. It does not have to be in competition with Findaway Voices but be a stand-alone Text to Speech version expecially dedicated to readers who struggle. It is a right that they get to hear the text if they have difficulty reading. Does Lulu care about this. Get ahead of the rest and allow us to bring our books to everyone. Thanks for video

      Very interesting insights. I like audiobooks, but haven’t really found a TTS audiobook that “sounds” right to me. You don’t get the emotion, inflection or accents from TTS. It could work for non-fiction, but for fiction, I’d suggest going with ACX if you’re on a limited budget.

I had to check twice to see if it was true. It was a lovely medium "weight" male voice, which is always pleasant. I can find it if you want to listen too.

      If you use Shopify, Lulu has a seamless integration. If it’s your actual website, there are some integration options, your best bet would be to check out their site.

    Hey, do we ever have to pay any cents to Lulu for all of these? And also if my book is already on Amazon, then do I have to publish it in order to publish through Lulu? And what about short stories? Can we publish it here? As we can't in Amazon unless it's 25 pages long right?

    • @KeithWheelerBooks
      @KeithWheelerBooks  Před 3 lety +1

      Great questions!
      1. As for Lulu, you never have to pay any upfront fees to upload or publish to Lulu.
      2. If you already have your book on amazon, it’s completely fine to publish your print book on Lulu as well. (With ebooks, if it’s on KDP and your in the KDP Select program then you can’t have your ebook on Lulu, but your print version can be anywhere.)
      3. You can publish short stories via ebook on KDP, Lulu and other platforms regardless of the page count. As for print books, there’s really no minimum page count with Lulu, however, there may be binding limitations based on the page count.(the book needs to be a certain number of pages for saddle stitch(10+ pages) as well as for perfect bound(24+ pages))
      I hope this helps.

    Hi I’ve been trying to get an ebook on to Lulu. I already have the paperback one. I have entered exactly as per your video. I removed a subtitle to make it easier and at Lulus suggestion removed all extra text on the title and copyright pages. Use cut and paste on to make sure no mistakes. Title on copyright always rejected. I’m stumped. Lulu not ver responsive. Any suggestions please. Thanks

      It’s possible, so you never want text outside the margin as well as any critical parts of your illustrations.

      In Lulu, go to My Projects, next to your book there will be a blue box that says "retire". Select retire and then after you receive your proof, if there are revisions that need to be made, you can click "revise". If everything looks good just select "restore".

    i have a question! so i’ve had history in releasing a book using lulu and i’m about to release a new one this month i have everything set up but when you get to the point where it says order proof copy or publish, if you set it to private and order a proof copy, will you be able to return to that setting and publish the book after you have gotten your proof copy because i wanted to get my proof copy before getting it released i have a specific date and i don’t wanna accidentally release the project a few weeks early. i’ve been wanting to ask this question because i haven’t found anyone asking that kind of question in the internet and such. like if i wanted to set it private, order copy, and once i get my copy, would i be able to go back into the project and go to that select. i hope you get this message and have a nice day!!

    • @KeithWheelerBooks
      @KeithWheelerBooks  Před 4 měsíci +1

      Technically, yes if you set it to private you can go back and change it. That said it’s not really necessary.
      The private vs public option has to do with how you want to sell the book. If you just want it for personal use and not sell it publicly, then you’ll mark it as private. If you plan on selling it online, then select the public option.
      As for launching the book, you can order a proof and keep the book as a saved draft which means it won’t publish live. Then when you’ve approved the proof, you can publish the book.
      I hope this helps.

    • @KeithWheelerBooks

      Unfortunately, there’s not much you can do about the trim sizes Lulu has or doesn’t have. Basically, you can either adjust your book to match one of their available trim sizes or stock with your current trim size and go with a different platform. KDP has the biggest selection of trim sizes, I’ve found.
      Please keep us posted on how things go.
