In a few months, I'm dropping a song that should meet all your points. I'm a solo metalcore artist of 13 years of age. Watching this video got me super hyped about my song and if you're interested in reacting to that when it comes out, that would be amazing.
Just trying to be heavy to be heavy. Tend to notice that songs with that the main focus have less emotions involved. Songs with emotion or greater message are A) More accessible B) More memorable (I.e. The Summoning)
I disagree. Solos in modern metal usually sound like exercises for guitarists and most of them are pretty similar. Instead I'd like to hear shorter solos with less notes (a good example is FFAA's Far From Heaven) and something more than traditional minor pentatonics
I am sure there is a middle ground between "NO SOLOS EVAH" and the convoluted nonsense that Kirk Hammet has been playing over the past two decades. I think the biggest issues with solos has been that most of them feel like something glued over, not an integral part of the song. I've always considered David Gilmore's solo on "Comfortably Numb" as one of the best rock solos, not because of technical prowess, but because it just lifts the entire song to another level.
I agree with a lot of these, ESPECIALLY the genre-blending and riffs! Whenever I try and write music, my go-to for writing a song is creating a riff for it, and I feel it really defines the song and is a big part of what makes it memorable
I found your perspective really interesting! Thanks for that. The only thing I´d partially disagree with is the whole "face of the band" thingy. Instead of saying that bands need a "face" I would rather have bands more embrace the individuality of each member on their own, otherwise we´ll end up where we are with Bad Omens, where for most people it´s just the Noah Sebastian show. That might help the band in terms of numbers but I personally would rather have bands that are more than "Fandom Obsession Guy and his Friends". good video, keep it up Birb. Much love
I think Brand of Sacrifice does it to perfection with Verse Chorus Verse Chorus Breakdown Chorus. And the choruses are always a bop and feels good to go back to.
I get what u mean and agree with a lot of what u said, altho I gotta say that I absolutely love the "heaviness competition" cuz I love heavier stuff and I don't think it should stop, I think it should continue paralel to new stuff and also evolve with new ways to be even heavier, for example adding more agresion. I love the things that come from this heaviness competition like Nitheful, Larcenia Roe, The Stygian Complex, Kanine etc.
To me the "heaviness competition" is just a part of the genre. Its its thing and every genre has a thing. Whether its how fast someone can rap, or how catchy their pop lyrics are.
I think the last sleep token album actually suffers from being over produced. I think a great example of an album last year that was more raw was the Dying Wish album. It sounded nostalgic which was refreshing
I 100% agree that too many bands sound the same. And for god sakes, can we bring some feeling and soul back to the guitar solos?! Sure it’s impressive when you can play 8000 notes in 16 bars of music, sweep pick & tap like a mad man, but most solos tend to sound like a feral turkey being strangled. That’s why I love Novelist. Their leads are so tasteful and pretty.
Although I love modern metalcore, your comment shows proof that I have gravitated towards more European styles of it (Gothic, Symphonic, Melodic Death and Black Metal). If I was in a band, I'd want it to blend with Black and Symphonic Metal
I like your reaction videos cause you always or almost always will say something at least slightly more creative than others that has value BUT THIS THIIIISSSSSSS This is the type of video that I love the most, yes actual content outside of reaction, but hell yeah brother, this actually brings value to people So Thank you, I hope me and my band (who is working on the very first music) will have the privilage to be here for you to react to Thank you once again and have a great day/evening/night/time
I was typing Enterprise Earth in to praise their newest release then you mentioned them. They are really coming into their own and genuinely sound like they’re having fun. The song you mentioned here (Accelerated Demise) is so fun. Sounds like old 70’s leads with modern death metal mixed with some jazz.
I think bands need to stop releasing half the album as singles, stop releasing album openers and closers as singles, and stop releasing singles a year before the album.
I’ve got to agree with every point you made, good video. I love modern metal but so many bands sound similar, it’s really important to lean into the aspects that make a band unique.
Also another thing I’d like to see more of is BASS. The most overlooked sound to a lot of bands unfortunately. Sure, you can make some cool songs with low tuned guitars, but when you let that bass shine through it changes everything. Metallica Hardcore bands as of recently have a nice bass that really elevates their music. And thinking-man death metal bands like Archspire and JFAC also know how to use the bass efficiently and effectively. It’s just such a nice sounds that gets so overlooked 😢
I 100% agree. A lot of the metalcore bands jumped on the "Wage War" sound and it got old really quickly, now it will be something else, but structurally speaking, I can't repeat this enough, please be creative for the love of metal.... I sound like a broken record, but sometimes I would love to grab some of those artists and shake them a little... I know it seems hard and they're trying to do their best to live off their passion for music, so I still respect those guys and I would most certainly not want to be in their shoes.. But damn, there's for sure a way to be creative and make a decent living off the metal scene and I feel like all the points you mentioned encapsulate this pretty well. You need more than repetitive catchy choruses or to be super heavy to make it. Sadly, way too many bands don't seem to get that.
As someone who is just now getting into metal, i nonetheless think your points are really good ones - the metal bands that have gotten me really excited are the ones that are already following these (esp genre bending, cool riifs, good collabs, diversified sounds). This is the way metal grows, and i am proof! Hope other people take your advice :)
One of the things I would absolutely love to see is Metal combined with Blues and or Soul. Or combine it with Country. Gimme a collab with HARDY! Or Gary Clark Jr with some of that Blues and Soul.
If you want metal with country, try SpiritWorld With the blues aspect, I get this is more jazz infused but might tickle your pickle, try Imperial Triumphant. They’re avant garde black metal heavily influenced by the New York blues/jazz scene
There are lots of talented bands out there, but creativity is what sets some apart from the rest. I understand how a trend starts, and how everyone wants to copy it, but at some point - once it becomes a formula that everyone recognizes - it’s over. Time to do something fresh and different… easier said than done though, for sure.
Embrace diversity in each song be it tempo or vocals or levels. More more more unique riffs pop singers as collabs as cleans in metal would be a great blend
Yo you should definitely do a deep dive on whats actually going on in Canada right now! Its the most exciting thing ever. Canada has got the best bands right now actually putting in the work, playing shows, building a huge scene and most importantly the music is good. A Mourning Star, Prowl, World of Pleasure, Mile End, Flash Back, Mil Spec, Gavel, Rust, Bad Bet, Serration, Bruiserweight, Cloned Apparition, Skull Gate, Reality Denied, Friction, 100% Pure, Lice, Cross Check, Freezerburn, Qwan, Klokwise, Ethereal Tomb, Dear Evangeline… Thats not even half of it. Point is, Canada on top right now
And outside of Canada too theirs definitely a bunch of bands loved and cherished by the people who know but more people need to tap in. Balmora, xNomadx, Pain of Truth, Drain, Mindforce, Gates to Hell, Restraining Order, Broken Vow, Magnitude, Bodyweb, Fleshwater, sunami…. Again… not even a fraction of whats going on
4) music videos, I completley agree with this take I'm not a musician myself but have allot of friends who are in bands. And I have always told them to get creative with their music video, because its not just the music bringing people back. if you want to check them out: I'll get by - Deathbeds Trust us were liars - The bluest light
9:20 love the mention for the Enterprise Earth boys. You want one of the most musically experimental deathcore bands right now, its them and ofc Brand of Sacrifice.
Omg I so agree with "bring back the riffs". I was listening to Great Southern Trendkill the other day, man did Pantera write great riffs. And each riff distinguishable from the others. Then I listened to Erra, and I could not pick out more than a few distinct riffs to save my life. No offense to Erra, they have a great vibe to their songs, but the low tuned 0s and 1s and high string twiddly twiddly riffs are so boring to me now.
The thing with the pop structure point is that a lot of very successful bands are using it to great effect. Idk why they would want to stop that to appease metal fans, when clearly reaching outside that bubble is proving to be more successful
I think I see what you are trying to get at. I don’t think you’re wrong but man I disagree with most of your points. I think your ideas of genre-blending etc can be cool but I feel the original metalcore sound will get lost. I personally miss the OG metalcore riff style and I’m not a fan of chaotic note-filled riffs that have been taking over most songs. I like the classic metalcore formula of V C V C B C and I think that there’s nothing wrong with it other than bands get lazy in that style. These are my opinions and I appreciate that you post your opinions for us to interact with
I think Animals As Leaders' video for "Red Miso" would serve as an example of very arty video. But then there are the instrument buffs who want to see the instruments being played even if in playback. As for the raw sound, people would have to learn again to go to gigs to hear decent live playing. Metal needs a campaign saying that it is not life, money or otherwise dangerous to go to the gig in spite of the wild looks the fans may have, that it is a show and form of expressing things. Metal fans should also stop projecting the stupid "wild" behaviour which effectively and really scares people away from live gigs even if they were interested. People outside metal won't notice the difference between show and the "civil" personality unless it itself brings it out.
Honestly I find most metal bands boring, same sounding (production soundwise, tone of voices, guitar sounds, style overall etc) not gonna mention bandnames but there a lot of bands in my opinion who got suddenly big today that don’t play solos for example.. and no , I’m not saying you should be a shredder, or in every single song should be a solo. But damn, don’t be monotone, it became a trend to always be mechanic and not natural, raw.
I agree with the majority of things here. Mostly the overproduction. There are lots of examples where a band can get really glossy or techy sounding and it can work (bmth, make them suffer) but there are also tons of examples of bands just ruining their sound by relying on the post-production to carry their songs. I don’t want to throw too many names out, but the big one for me is Sleep Token. They have some cool ideas and I appreciate them thinking somewhat outside the box. But the guitars are destroyed in the mix, the trap beats are so cold and lifeless, and the vocals are SO over dramatized past enjoyability. This may be a personal thing but yeah it’s kind of a turnoff. Also heavily agree with riffs. I was so disappointed with the latest Erra single because their last album had so many catchy and bendy riffs that were exciting, and on Cure they just played the same low tuned 0s that everybody else is doing. That’s why I love the new Vitriol and Enterprise Earth, and why I think the new JFaC will be so great. They know how to throw down some great riffs
No more vocal olympics but Tom Barber, Will Ramos, Alex Terrible, Dickie Allen can all keep doing what they do coz those dudes know what they're doing. 100% agree with more riffage as a big fan of the direction Parkway Drive is going, Enterprise Earth's new album also pretty spicey with riffs everywhere. I usually prefer vocals more but I won't say no to some sick riffs.
This is a video that needed to be made, thank you. A few things I’d like to add, not every band needs to tune to drop F or lower. The overly produced, synthesized, layered, industrial stuff is getting old to me as well.
This is why I'm so keen to see what Jinjer is bringing this year. Every time I listen to them after having listened to more traditional metal bands they're just so refreshing.
Not sure if it’s the same for you, but I’ve been craving a more raw or analog sound over the overproduced/digital stuff for years now. I still enjoy some metalcore or deathcore, but bands like Orthodox or more melodic hardcore like Drug Church have been my go-to’s lately.
@saughs deffo the same for me. metalcore has become too clean and clinical sounding. the highly polished sound most of these bands are going for just makes them sound the same imo. its why i could never really get into bmth post those first 2 records
Something that annoys me that I've talked about in my videos are 5th focused choruses, where the chorus melody hangs around the 5th scale degree of the song for too long without much variation. Architects, ERRA, and Invent Animate are three bands I can think of that do it a lot and it makes a song feel bland to me
All of this minus maybe #5 because producing is a whole other thing, don't quote me I'm not an expert, boils down to #1. We like what we like...with a twist. It doesn't have to be everything on your list every track but metal bands really do need to get more creative and think outside the box. Tasty riffs over chugs all day baby. Okay maybe 80/20.
Do yourself a favour and do a deep dive into Babymetal. Along with BMTH sense they are close friends and are colluding with each other on pushing the industry forward on the global scale. They take inspiration off from each other.
Now, i love a good breakdown as much as the next guy, but over the past few years i've started loving 2 steps more, Bodysnatchers' song 'Exterminate' is the perfect deathcore 2 step, and hardcore bands, like actual hardcore bands do 2 steps nastier than To The Hellfire. As far as overproduction goes yeah its really getting stale, bands like Psycho Frame are heavier than most other deathcore bands for me simply because it doesn't sound overproduced. Like don't get me wrong, I love LOVE the production of Will Putney and Buster, they are to modern metal and hardcore as Terry Date and Colin Richardson were in the 90s and early 2000s, but honestly i feel like the scene needs a St. Anger snare. Sure we all knocked it and clowned on Lars for it before but in this current soundscape of production, it doesn't sound so bad does it?
Tbf their production is super overdone in my opinion. Kudos for them trying something different though, I just hope they try to make the music with more emotion rather than relying on the mixing to do it for them
@@ashleyabraham2909 nah I’ve never been to see them live. If they were playing with another band I like I’d stick around. How are their performances live?
@justinvarieur4411 IMO they are better live. You can really hear the raw emotion in Vessels voice, and ii adds even more to it. Worth checking out some of the videos of them on CZcams!
This is a personal peeve that I think all bands should stop doing: Bad lip/expression syncing in music videos. I love Spiritbox, but Courtney is the #1 offender on my list. The auditory screams mixed with flat visual speaking expression is just cringe.
I haven't been listening to much metal this year. It's starting to just blend together honestly. I loved the new Landmvrks song and the new Bad Omens grew on me over time, but I'm just kind of over it. All I need is catchy and fun metal. I'm not really into shit like Slaughter to Prevail or Lorna Shore that's just heavy and not much else
I feel like we are living in the 80’s right now. Metalcore is hair metal right now. Overproduced Lack of sincerity All sounds the same Lack of creativity My god I hope there is a young Cobain out there to come by and say “you are all obsolete as of now”…….
Two things I like to see change: 1. Tackle their fan bases more (too much hate for women and minorities) 2. Stop wearing "black uniforms". It is so hard to distinguish between bands. NGL, I want more verity in band merch colours too.
What's something you'd like for bands to stop doing for 2024?
You hit the nail on the head about structure. Its making metalcore and post-hardcore so predictable these days. I also want more solos.
Hell yea, great Vid😍
In a few months, I'm dropping a song that should meet all your points. I'm a solo metalcore artist of 13 years of age. Watching this video got me super hyped about my song and if you're interested in reacting to that when it comes out, that would be amazing.
808's and Trap beats. It's 2024 leave it back in the 2010s
Just trying to be heavy to be heavy. Tend to notice that songs with that the main focus have less emotions involved. Songs with emotion or greater message are A) More accessible B) More memorable (I.e. The Summoning)
Bmth is a perfect example for most of your points for years now 👍
It didn’t cross my mind but you’re actually right haha
@@METALBIRB 😁
Probably the only exception being that the song structures of their last singles are all very generic
One thing that more banda need to do is bring back solos and leads to their music. It gets to boring and formulaic without it.
Agreed. Leads and solos! Check us out. Specifically our track “drowning” has a solo 🙏
I disagree. Solos in modern metal usually sound like exercises for guitarists and most of them are pretty similar. Instead I'd like to hear shorter solos with less notes (a good example is FFAA's Far From Heaven) and something more than traditional minor pentatonics
Yeah no, solos were overdone as fuck back then, there's a reason no one play's them anymore
Yes and no to solos, not every song but on occasion where it fits and don’t over do it.
To add on the riff part, no more Architects Doomsday copy cats!! 😂

I think Brand of Sacrifice does it to perfection with Verse Chorus Verse Chorus Breakdown Chorus. And the choruses are always a bop and feels good to go back to.

Their leads are so tasteful and pretty.

I like your reaction videos cause you always or almost always will say something at least slightly more creative than others that has value
BUT THIS
THIIIISSSSSSS
This is the type of video that I love the most, yes actual content outside of reaction, but hell yeah brother, this actually brings value to people
So Thank you, I hope me and my band (who is working on the very first music) will have the privilage to be here for you to react to
Thank you once again and have a great day/evening/night/time
I was typing Enterprise Earth in to praise their newest release then you mentioned them. They are really coming into their own and genuinely sound like they’re having fun. Spot on with overproduction, so many bands rely on it for records now then sound terrible live, especially in modern metalcore
I think every Australian ‘local band’ should take note of this. Every single one I can’t tell who’s who
Vocal olympics is exactly the reason why i can't get more into deathcore. I like when artists are creative in their own way
I agree with most of your points. I personally really love the poppy sounds and the production. So in that sense, I don't feel like it should change
I miss the days of For today , oh sleeper , heavy Gojira, the chariot and Norma Jean. We were so spoiled in 1999-2010. So spoiled
Youd like SeeYouSpaceCowboy, Static Dress
As someone who is just now getting into metal, i nonetheless think your points are really good ones - the metal bands that have gotten me really excited are the ones that are already following these (esp genre bending, cool riifs, good collabs, diversified sounds). One of the things I would absolutely love to see is Metal combined with Blues and or Soul. Or combine it with Country. Gimme a collab with HARDY! Or Gary Clark Jr with some of that Blues and Soul.
If you want metal with country, try SpiritWorld

Counterparts mentioned 😤 (in a good way)

4) music videos, I completley agree with this take

Great takes in this video I agree with pretty much everything
what about things bands should be doing more of?
Thats why i prefer a good fade out here & there & i love it with sleep token with their heaviest song Vore
From top to bottom, I couldn't agree more.
Bands need to stop ignoring thall. Thall is for all, melodic riffs you can sing along to and atmospheric ambiance really get my juices juicin.
Omg I so agree with "bring back the riffs". I was listening to Great Southern Trendkill the other day, man did Pantera write great riffs. And each riff distinguishable from the others. #10 YES THANK YOU
#11 Don't take your music too seriously.
honestly these points are why I've moved on from metalcore to hardcore.

No more Bleghs.. its nothing but a box to check now.
Do yourself a favour and do a deep dive into Babymetal. Along with BMTH sense they are close friends and are colluding with each other on pushing the industry forward on the global scale. They take inspiration off from each other.
Bro you should buy a new camera asap
That's Great Kid Get to The Point
So, be Sleep Token? Yes! 💜😅
Tbf their production is super overdone in my opinion. Kudos for them trying something different though, I just hope they try to make the music with more emotion rather than relying on the mixing to do it for them
@justinvarieur4411 fair! Have you watched any of the videos of them live or, been lucky enough to see them?
I'm glad I'm not the only one that is irritated by that
I’m not a fan of music videos I’d rather have the lyric videos lol
I haven't been listening to much metal this year. It's starting to just blend together honestly. I loved the new Landmvrks song and the new Bad Omens grew on me over time, but I'm just kind of over it. All I need is catchy and fun metal. I'm not really into shit like Slaughter to Prevail or Lorna Shore that's just heavy and not much else
“Catchy and fun metal”
Babymetal bro
That shit will change your life
Annoying takes. Sounds like you just need to go make your own band and create your own sound how you like them and maybe others will like it too.
I feel like we are living in the 80’s right now. Metalcore is hair metal right now.
Overproduced
Lack of sincerity
All sounds the same
Lack of creativity
My god I hope there is a young Cobain out there to come by and say “you are all obsolete as of now”…….
Two things I like to see change:
1. Tackle their fan bases more (too much hate for women and minorities)
2. Stop wearing "black uniforms". It is so hard to distinguish between bands. NGL, I want more verity in band merch colours too.
Need to stop calling mainstream radio rock "metalcore"
Nothing in music turns me off more than unintelligible barking into the microphone.
Delete breakdowns and octave changes
