  • Today I'm talking about making your own seed starting mix using coco coir and perlite. The mix is simple but the reasons for using a seed starting mix for your seedlings needs a little more time.

This video was great! I spent so much money my first year gardening, and now that all the glitz and glamour are gone I can get into the nitty gritty of gardening and create a more sustainable and cost effective garden. Thanks Rick haha long time fan!

Happy Gardening Gang! I hope you enjoy this video. This is how I'm planning on doing most of my seed starting mix this year!

This is 1 of your best videos ever. My daughter use the coco coir & everything in her garden looks mah-velous. Also, she said that ppl hv alot of problems with gnats because of certain soils having fungus gnat eggs in them. Especially If nutrition or food is added in those soils. (Thnxgvng for the pests.)
She told me this earlier this month. Glad you did a video. I'm sold indeed. The trellis video (daughter's info included) & this video are 💪🏼💪🏼🏆🏆🏆.

Thank you so very much! I've been all over the internet price shopping and looking for cheaper ways to start my seeds this year as everything has gotten so expensive...thank you so very much for all of your great advice and the increments.

Get Finer Perlite particles for seed starting. Coarse are good for cactus mixes.

This is very similar to what I do, except I add a small amount of vermiculite, it helps with moisture retention. While probably not necessary, I also add a little worm castings into seedlings that might need a little longer indoors(my peppers and tomatoes seemed to love it!) to give me peace of mind that there are a few nutrients they have access to.

I've played around with the vermiculite and didn't really see a difference so I decided to drop it out. Too expensive.

@@StoneyAcresGardeningdo you notice gnats near your seedlings? That’s the reason I’ve seen people mention using vermiculite.

Do not blame Mr. Rick if you have to narrow down 80 types of microgreen seeds from your list after viewing the seeds from True Leaf. I was gifted radish, greens, carrots & pea microgreen seeds & was like Smeagle from Lord of the Ring with the results 😂😂😂 TY so much for Everything 🌱🌱🌱

      LOL!!
Start with the easy ones - Radish, Broccoli, cabbage, peas, sunflower, buckwheat, and any of the salad mixes. Honestly that is the bulk of what we grow all the time.

Do you add any fertilizer to the mix? Also do you water it in again after you plant the seeds?

I'm not sure I understand the question. Once you use it there will be a plant growing in it and you will put the whole thing, plant and seedling mix out in your garden.
