Kingsley North is a lapidary store in Michigan's U.P. They make a great cab machine and sell many other brands too. They have a huge selection rough rock, tumblers, grit, jewelry supplies etc. at good prices. I buy most of my coarse grit from here in 45 lb. bags. It's the best price I have found. You've made this Geologist very happy! It's becoming rarer to see where 'famous' rock types actually originated from because the outcrops are either kept private, are now buried or were long since worked out. Hopefully there'll be some form of protection put on at least one of the readily accessible outcrops to prevent it from being slowly chipped away by souvenir hunters. New geologists should be able to get the same experience of seeing the source rock in a hundred years as we can now. Keep up the good work.

Good points. Also these rocks are extremely dense and very difficult to chip away at. Good thing too is that the Lorrain formation is very large and outcrops are in several locations along the north shore of Huron.
Yes, the government should own all the rocks, so precious fossils, crystals, and artifacts be allowed to be eroded out and lost forever lest evil commercial collectors save them and sell them to future generations.

They do have sources. They get moved around by glaciers, and water, but they had to come from somewhere originally.
@@MichiganRocks I think if you drew a straight line from Bruce Mines to where you find pudding stones in Michigan, that would in fact indicate the direction of travel of the glacial lobe that deposited them there.
@@rodchallis8031 I think that's about right, but they're spread pretty widely across the lower peninsula.
@@MichiganRocks yeah, one would have to account for further movement via lake currents, and other factors. I know they used this method to find diamonds in the north here. They found Kimberlite in either northern British Columbia, or Northern Albertastan, and using maps that showed glacial movements, traced the origin of the rocks back. Interesting wrinkle-- the ancient volcanic necks they were looking for were no where to be found. That is until they used a geomagnetic survey, and realized all the necks were covered by frozen ponds and lakes. I love geology detective stories.
The MOTHER-ROCK of PUDDINGSTONE is in Canada! Those Canadians will have Puddingstone to work with forevermore. Michigan gets the Glacial, water rolled cast offs.
I've seen some just as good here, just not quite as close together. There's a church on M-32 called Big Rock Church. There's an awesome puddingstone in the yard. I like to imagine they worship it, but I think Big Rock is the name of the community.
It's really hard to you have to mine it with saws. It's quartzite after all.

We sure did enjoy our visit. We were only there for about six hours, but I would like to go back. I hadn't been to Canada in over 20 years.

Now you’ll have to get yourself to Bancroft Ontario and see our sodalite, apatite and garnet mines!! We are headed to Vermilion and crisp lighthouse next weekend all because of you and your videos!
That's a bit more of a commitment. I might have to meet up with MeMiner if I make a trip like that someday.
Enjoy the U.P. I think you'll like the rocks you find on the beaches there. Vermillion can be kind of sandy sometimes. If it is, check out the mouth of the Two Hearted River, the Blind Sucker River or Muskellunge Lake State Park.

A lot of people from Michigan know what they are, but I can see why people from other places wouldn't. For me, they were an acquired taste.

I've only seen one of those big boulders here in Hillsdale county around Jonesville. Owner had it end of driveway with road address on it. My girlfriends at time lived down from the Godfrey family and she asked them if she could get rocks and he laughed and said get all you want. She has her house surrounded by rocks from his fields and There's pudding stones in them. Thank you for sharing
I have seen several farmers who put puddingstones around their houses. People sure do love them.

I've driven by that location many times in my life and never knew it was there! Our favourite camping grounds circle from Sudbury to Wawa to Timmins. Thanks for the video and the tour of S&S Creations.
We went camping at Wawa when I was a toddler. Apparently, I knew the name of the town as we were driving up to it. I was also thirsty.

As someone who scours the shores of Lake Huron near Kincardine Ontario in search of Puddingstones, Petoskeys, Cladopora, Unakite and soooo many other stones you've taught me to recognize I now have this video as a great source of information to pass on to others. Keep 'em coming.
Someone else also suggested that I go there. That's quite a ways farther, so it wouldn't be a day trip, but I might do an overnight trip sometime.

I wasn't sure we were actually going to find the actual bedrock until we talked to Stephanie. I think the boulders were the most fun to see, but I'm sure glad we didn't strike out on the bedrock.

Oohhh! I love field trips! That was an amazing trip, Rob. I am fascinated and was just about as excited as you were as you jumped from rock to rock. So glad you found the source and took us along on this jaunt. I never would have imagined the abundance of the raw rock outcroppings. All the puddingstone that S&S have and the creativity of all their products are incredible.
The whole trip was a fun little adventure. There's something about going to another country, even if it's only three hours from home, that made it a little more exciting.
Just got back home from being in the UP for a week. Michigan is a gorgeous state.

There are other types of puddingstones, but I think this is the only place this particular kind comes from.

That wouldn't have been impressive except that I had just gotten my first pair of real glasses about a week before. They're progressive lenses and I have very bad depth perception for doing things like jumping from rock to rock. I'm lucky I didn't break something.

I have been to Canada several times, but not for a long time. About a year after college, I drove my Jeep around Lake Superior with a couple friends. We are all over six feet tall and managed to camp from a two door Jeep for a week. We had it literally packed to the roof.
@@MichiganRocks I used to take off like that myself, with my fishing pole in the back... Drove up to Virginia Beach and then went down the east coast all the way to Miami, then up the Gulf of Mexico to Panama City Beach Florida... It took two weeks and I really enjoyed it. I didn't fish that much until Pensacola when my buddies drove down.
