China has changed drastically in 10 years. SerpentZA and Laowhy86 have lived in China for over 10 years, and the country has changed for the better and for the worse.
Things like personal safety are at an all time high, and things like personal freedoms are at an all time low. We have dealt with full support, and backlash from the locals, and it has had influence on how we, as westerners, have dealt with life here.

- They grow heroin here.
- Anyway let's talk about what's changed for the better.
Poppy* which is used for opioids..... And heroin... Lol
aint nuttin' wrong with good ol' Heroin if you take it responsibly! So sick of the stigma on drugs. If parents learned how to raise their kids properly drugs wouldn't be a problem. Portugal legalized all drugs and guess what they are doing just fine. When you make everything normal people don't wonder about it, they don't wonder why is it illegal whats the big deal?
@@Andronicus87 the intricacy of Portugals legalisation isn't as grand as you'd think. (THC limits, 1g per person, some the best powders Imo anyway, aren't as happily free). It works most for smack (which is fun when used responsibly sure Ngl), but H is one that's really had a blessing. I looked into moving to Portugal, so naturally checked that jazz, and was quite disappointed tbf as H isn't exactly DOC
@@Andronicus87 There is no good way of taking heroin. Yeah but that doesn't mean it should be illegal though.
I do hope you gentlemen realize and appreciate the special relationship you have formed over the past few years. Really close friends reach a level of understanding and agreement that is truly quite rare and unique. This seldom happens in any given lifetime and it is certainly rewarding to behold at arms length here on CZcams. Good work, gentlemen!

Do you really believe close friends only happen seldomly? Just wondering because I see where ever I go , office , school, church , etc I see so many people in their close ties or cliques. Except for me. I'm never able to break into those.
I don’t agree. These two have a very organic relationship. They have similar interests and values and experience. Whereas relationships in office, school are so artificial and fake, at least in the US. People smile at and agree with you all the time but when shit goes down they’ll stab your back or won’t do shit to help you. Comradeship is dying in America. In reality, it’s just hard to find someone who you can call good friend.
@@bryanryan4504 You probably have a curse on you and an evil spirit of rejection. Look up Win Worley
The Juri Pootsman song "I remember you" is a great intro song for your videos.

You are a great source of insight to the Chinese mentality. I don't know of anywhere else to get honest, unbiased opinions.
Try the "Gweilo 60" channel
I like how chill they are too. Their stories are much more palatable than other channels. Also, they're way more experienced than other bloggers.
This is really true.
It is un else able the amount of ignorance there is outside of China about what the “real China” is.
Sadly, I can confirm this all... I have been in China twenty times, between 2004 and now (More than 200.000 km on Chinese trains!), and during my last trip I couldn't enjoy myself anymore... Luggage scanners, police checks, barb wire, militarized train stations, extreme amounts of surveillance cameras, greatly increased internet censorship, etc... :-/ While on the other hand the enjoyable, beautiful things are all disappearing through overdevelopment... :-( Old historical buildings are torn down, previously pristine landscapes are totally destroyed, etc... My first vacations in China were fabulous (Maybe the best vacations in my life!), but such trips are not possible anymore, it's all becoming cold, boring and materialistic in my eyes... As a result, I'm not planning any trips through China anymore, it's now simply too much effort for way too little reward... Good food and meeting local friends are perhaps the only remaining fun things...
That is not a pretty picture.
I am a brit living in Germany. I never intend to go to china but i still watch all your videos. well done!!!
As a German, I'm kind of curious; How do you like Germany?/ What made you move towards Germany?
Just go, you won't regret it
Dirk Fuller good
TheWRFTroll probably has something to do with Germany having the best European economy........... and getting discounts when buying German vehicles?
Functional - but ALWAYS late.
Something else that has seen a staggering jump is debt, it's just so easy to borrow money in China nowadays, all the Chinese I know are heavily in debt, so much that it makes Americans look reasonable. Lots of them also believe or act like they will never need to reimburse that money somehow. Public debt is over 300% of GDP, consumer debt is over 220% of all assets.
It’s an uncomfortable truth
Due to chinas growth rate and economy growing so fast then it the high debt isn’t terrible the issue will be if or when the economy slows.
That was an astonishingly accurate and balanced assessment of what life is like in China. I have noticed the greater emphasis on the "hammer and sickle" in the north as well.
Donald Knoblet
Well that's worrying.
DEATH TO ALL COMMUNISTS!
"How many 'broken eggs' (human corpses in this case) does an ideology get to create in order to deliver heaven of earth , before said ideology by its death toll is considered invalid?"
Good question! Christianity has murdered millions upon millions and has been allowed to prosper for 2000 years now. And it has a far higher body count than any other ideology. Terrorism btw is overwhelmingly religiously motivated, mainly by the two Abrahamic siblings Christianity and Islam.
lived in China 2004-2015; most of which was an amazing experience and the happiest times of my life. Couldn't disagree with anything said. Clear change in the atmosphere around 2012. Wish both Winston and CMilk a good future.
yes. Nationalism and collectivism rapidly rose!!
I recently started watching these videos, I really had little to no interest in China before I discovered them, now I know more about the place than most people I know! I think these guys are great and should keep up the good work.
True a few yesrs ago they made me want to move there before the country went totalitarian
It's so much fun watching you guys navigate down the roads and talking away at the same time. You must be totally ambidextrous or great multitaskers or something. And the way you talk to each other, you must be great friends. It's interesting listening to you both gabber away. One leaves off and the other picks it up. It's like a dance, lol, back and forth. What do you guys do for a living and why in China for so long? Don't you miss your homeland?
CZcams obviously. That's what they do for a living. And Winston doesn't live in his homeland because they brutalize or murder white people often, and the government discriminates against white people too.
If they're happy why go back to any place when doing well.
Unfortunately nothing good ever lasts forever and even though I have happily lived in China for the last 37 years I'm leaving next month and for the very reasons you highlighted so well in this video
.
Thats unfortunate. I hope you are doing well now in your new home.
37 years? Were you a foreigner? What's your story?
"Just around the corner" is my trigger phrase because of a video we had to watch about puberty in elementary school.
One bad thing about China today vs 10 years ago is the airline industry. 10 years ago, air transport in China was like the US in the "golden age" (20 years ago) with superb service and comfort. Now anyone can get on a plane and it's worse than riding the bus.
skylinec83: But a hell of a lot safer and on time more, that's more important to me. But there are the crazies that jump up as soon as the wheels touch at landing.
Dan Blumel - You're probably right. Last time I was on a plane in China, the old lady next to me argued with the flight attendant for 10 straight minutes while we were descending about why she should be allowed to keep her overhead compartment sized suitcase on her lap as we're landing...as if that would really give her a head start in getting off the plane before everyone else.
But at least while riding a Chinese bus, you can always get off on the next stop. With the planes, you might get stuck on the tarmac for several hours with zero notice. And heaven help you if you're next to a dude with bad BO or a screaming kid.
It is pretty much like the traffic jam they mentioned in the video. Remember that the traffic jam is caused by the raising live standard that everyone is able to afford a car. So, I would not say having everyone enjoying the airline services is essentially a bad thing, but I do feel sorry for your feeling, and I will miss it with you.
That's sad about the airline service because back in '97 my group had a good flight going in and leaving China. Popularity of flights has made them less special.
poortaiwanese : Agreed. After waiting 19 hours to get out of Guangzhou Baiyun airport, because of delay-after-cancellation-after-delay (the high-speed train would have got us into Shanghai in 7 - 9 hours!), my wife and I have agreed to use the train in preference in future. We have to go to Beijing in a couple of weeks and it is no contest - we will be taking the train!
Fantastic video. Very insightful. The changes sound significant. Last time I went to China was 10 years ago and it would be great to see in person how it has changed.
Shenzen looks amazing too.

Great video Winston, I like these ADV China vlogs.
I recently discovered ADVChina, SerpentZA, and Laowhy86. You guys create so many great videos! I know very little about modern China, though I have taken Chinese History classes. It's been a long time since I saw a video here, thanks for sharing such a great content. Cheers from Brazil!
man you guys really nailed it. I mentioned basically all these things today I was explaining to a friend how things have changed before I saw your video. Totally mirrored everything
100% agree. I was in Shanghai 2012 and 2016.
2012: "OMG everyone treats me like a celebrity"
2016: No one cares or worse
Honestly though, why would you want to be treated like some hot shit celebrity? Surely you would want to blend in with the people and integrate to the culture? Unless you crave attention, that is.
By the way, sorry if that comment sounds passive aggressive, I was just using it to question why you would state your comment, with the implication that things are now "worse" for foreigners because we don't get a special treatment or anything.
Or is your emphasis on the "or worse" part of your comment?
@@Checkmate1138 I didn't want to be treated like that - just an observation. People were lining up to take pictures with me in 2012...
Exited to see Concerning Northern China and you guys in LA
Thanks for the upload excellent quality.
I like how you added a map showing the places you are talking about. Small touches. Great content.
These videos are very informative, and much appreciated. The choices of topics are spot on, in sync with most of the questions I would have if traveling to China.
Having said that, my personal interest in going there for any extended length of time has dropped to almost zero.
While current China and its history, even in just the past several decades is intriguing, the current take away message is radically accelerating growth, as in perpetually pervasive construction projects everywhere and enormous, densely populated mega-cities.
The intersection of a purported "communist" government merging with capitalist enterprises everywhere, at all levels of scale, really is intriguing, to say the least.
What I sense, though, is an increasingly nationalistic mindset spreading throughout the populace. Anyone from elsewhere in the world who tries to connect with the local culture will soon discover that they will always be an outsider, no matter what the circumstance or length of time spent there.
In any case, I find it all fascinating, even if only experienced through the lens of your YT video series.
Stay awesome!
I havent watched it and already kudos to you guys for making this episode long. You have no idea how fast a video is over when you are high. So yes please 30+ minutes spisodes for ADVChina !! Lets do this lol
LOVED it! Many, many thanks to you guys !!
Nice, a good old bike ride with a balance of serious discussion and banter! What more could I ask for?
Very informative video, guys! The only thing is that y'all apologize too much for your opinions. I get that there are people who may disagree, but that's how life is. Stop trying to please everyone or you'll end up pleasing no one. Not me though, ADVChina is life! PEACE
My guess is they apologize for some of their Chinese viewers, not their western viewers. I think they are exercising diplomacy towards a culture that requires certain behaviors from 'foreigners.'
Fair comment on changes. The backlash to improved living for Chinese is any small reversal is glaring and its easy to point at foreigners and say "They did this to us" because it's easier to do than than finding their own inherent flaws. Happens everywhere. BTW, been watching Northern China. Nice cut guys. Time is always at a premium for filming. Diversity versus depth. Hard to get right, but you have a good mix. Great audio cuts, everything fits. Got to say you missed a big Opportunity in Harbin. Maybe you noticed that there was not much retail on the streets around St Sophia Church. Every 200m there is a set of steps in the street that goes down and down... About 40m below the surface is a huge vanishing point of narrow tunnels for several km, lined with tiny shops, all converted from redundant nuclear fallout shelters. Wife and I got lost down there for a couple of hours, more than once. Quite unique. Warm too. You guys will have to go back in the Winter and have a closer look. Lots of special stuff in that city. Oh yeah, in Qingdao, you should have gone to the Tsingtao Beer Museum. Awesome. They have a miniature bar in a room tilted 30º so you have to walk through hanging onto chairs and walls. Cameras show your bar room crawl efforts to people watching outside. The room looks normal, but everyone walking through it looks utterly pissed. Beer tasting at the end of the tour. Totally worth it. Although Qingdao was friggin cold when I was there last. Big chunks of sea-ice washing up on the beaches. Brrr. Until next time... (you know the drill)
You guys are the best. I've been studying Chinese for half a year, and it's certainly a tiny amount of time compared to what I'll spend studying this language, but you guys add so much richness to my decision.
China is a great country, there's so much to explore and it has this enourmous potential as a whole. I find both your ADV videos and your videos from your personal channels very informative and oddly amusing to watch.
I hope one day I can find myself in the same kind of places you visit.

Who would have thought that McDonald's, KFC, Pizza Hut, and Starbucks would view China as their most important market in 2018, 10 years ago? Oh how beautiful this is. Sorry I missed you in LA. Have a great year.
Maybe now with the country becoming so developed they can finally find a solution to their pollution problem.
It's actually a huge business in China atm. If you have the skill or product that can reduce pollution or improve environment you will certainly make money in China. China has been doing a lot to reduce pollution it's getting to the point of absurdity actually.
It is getting better. I was surprised about the air quality last time I got back, it was really good in the summertime. Surely it is far from satisfactory in general, and especially for most of the industrial areas, but it is being resolved progressively.
Not really. I have experienced the worst era of pollution in China and those summers suck af. Btw I dont have the incentive to lie anyways since I think the pollution now is still awful af. So I dont know why you have to be rude.
CHINA is shipping its population abroad in a mass colonization push. Buying off politicians and silencing opposition is a key factor in the success of this master plan.

Your first-person perspective provides a valuable counterpoint to other news media, and your candor is much-respected. I lived in China for 13 months circa 2009, so this was a particularly interesting video for me.
Only been living here coming up Five years (compared to you guys not long ) but I personally feel it's been getting easier being a foreigner. Year on year more foreigners about and the younger generation are generally more open minded. I think your opinions would be more better suited to maybe the older generation as a whole with a few exceptions. Still liked the vid as your opinions are always worth a listen :o)
I have been living in China for more than 12 years now. I lived in Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Shanghai, Beijing, Xian and other smaller cities. IMHO, you guys live in the worst part of China with respect to crime, social behavior and personal freedom. In my first few years there, I noticed that the civil laws were not "executed" according to the book. People may think that there were more freedom. In the last few years, I started to notice that civil laws were started to apply and things were started to get more restricted. People here in China still have plenty of freedom as long as they abide by the law. Things that people here are not allowed to do are very much similar what we can't do back home in America. This country has changed a lot. Well, if we don't like it here, we can always go home.
@@kennmossman8701 You could argue that with any free Western country. Laws are still laws; otherwise, we'd live in anarchy.

Love your content. Found it cuz I miss china (ABC who spent half of childhood in Shanghai) and was curious about hong kong. Keep up the good work and thank you for updating me the things that are going on currently in China.
So nice to hear your stories. :)
I do want to say that I just rented an apartment in China as an American. The landlord asked what nationality I was and seemed to be much more willing to rent to an American than someone from Europe or another area of the world. I don't buy the American hate story because it has been my experience that there is some pretty serious American foreigner privilege in China even right now. I've never once been treated badly because I was an American. It has always been seen as a positive by the people I do business with or the people I meet face to face in China. If you meet a Chinese person who irrationally hates Americans they are probably some seriously poor heavy drinking moped taxi guys or something like that.
Oh, just you wait. I was driven out of china as an American. Lived and worked there. Watch the smiles, and then suddenly they will want more money from you and steal, lie and cheat you. They will turn on you. They love you and then suddenly become jealous and want to kill you. Don't be fooled by it. I didn't want this to be true. Just had a layover in Shanghai two weeks ago, and it's even worse now. Had my coat stolen at the airport and was treated by some nasty Chinese woman on my flight. She refused to serve the Americans. Watch your back. Always have an escape route out of there. They are a devious people.
Exposing Liars if I am not a Chinese, I almost believe in your words😏
Money is king. They associate Americans as cash cows.
Of course there are genuinely nice people in China, but you should learn to discern face and genuine.

You can only vote in municipal elections.

The candidates would usually be nominated prior to the election, so there's no competition even in municipal elections. Those votes are meaningless.
Democracy means nothing to them, they just want to have a better life regardless who's in charge, if they can live well, they don't care, if they can't, another revolution comes in....

Well as of today it looks like China wont be rid of the Xi regime anytime soon, so i guess the trends will continue.
Never assume a trend will continue. Something always happens. Xi is not popular now.

China is not an immigrant country. You can not judge it from an immigrant country's perspective.
We can judge since we live here
C-Milk is from the US, which is a country of immigrants.
ADVChina Don't get me wrong hahaha. What I mean is you should not use an immigrant country as criteria.
Of course, you can judge or even criticize!
Resistance to outside influence is a legitimate approach for any society. It's not wrong, and it isn't neccessary right. It's propagandized as evil by leftwing these days as a mechanism to skew political thought. What happens if millions of chinese go to america and no americans go to china? China extends its influence and america is diluted.
All humans are immigrants, humans didn't always exist on every continent. Only those that live where we evolved are technically not immigrants.
