Might wanna look into seeing if the ignition is coded these bombardiers are common for coded ignition switch

@@2vintage best bet call a dealer and give the vin and they can tell you yes or no but from my experience with these machines one thing I did learn was that they had key coded ignitions. And when sitting for long period of time with no power they loss connection

Hey bud how you doing today I live in Louisiana my name is John Young I love watching you buy that stuff and making it run I'm a mechanic too I can work on two strokes but I could never take the cranks apart or the cases I always would screw up I never could finish it the easy stuff is easy you know but when I seen you take that one quad that you put them new things in and made it run when it was so hard to get it running you made it run and I couldn't believe it them shims you put in it and it ran that was amazing but I think you're a great mechanic now I love watching your stuff

It could be that there’s a teather switch somewhere on the quad with out the teather wire plugged into it causing no spark.
Absolutely right, I’ve watched guys tear motors apart then I’d come find a bad switch or wire, it pays to learn how to troubleshoot
Maybe its just me but anytime I see new cdi wiring harness etc the first thing that comes to mind is they were chasing some sort of no spark issue and this thing still may have a no spark problem

One of my dream ATV's. I remember wanting one of these so bad back in the day. Once again, they never come up for sale. People seem to hold onto these. They are unique and fun.
BiscuitPuncher I owned one for 5 years my dad owned a couple when they first got released back in 2000, they’re the best built bikes money could buy. They were designed for cross country racing and duning so they over engineered that rotax engine in them so there made for the abuse
For $900? People wont even sell the 250cc variant broken for less then $1800 in my area.

Exact reason why I bought my banshee from someone in Arizona and had it shipped over here to PA. Paid 3300$ for a good condition banshee with title. Over here they're going for 5500+ with title

Im aint gonna lie i own one when i was 17. And i broke my back axle in half.. not once twice.. yeah i was hard on it but its a bombardier,not a chineese quad
Restoration work I owned one for 5 years and the only way I could get it up off the ground was dumping the clutch. I call bullshit on your little statement son.

Lotta dirt in that jug to be rolling it over, stating how smooth it is. Won't be smooth for long you keep doing that.
When it is all up and working you should race the raptor 660 or trx450r with it.
I have a 2003 ds 650 and its a beast they have a wierd powerband kinda feels like a two stroke
It’s cool that you restore the quads and stuff to make them run then get rid of them or whatever you do. But you should do a full full build of a quad or bike like rip it all down sand blast the Frame and new parts plastics the whole 9 I think that would make for a great series and then have these little projects on the side! I would love to see that

Without sounding simple, not sure if you already tried this... but both the plugs need to be ground out at the same time for spark, no?

Me and my dad own a 2002 DS650, we dont ride it much. But we always run the engine. The only thing that sucks about them is finding parts

Love the new project about time you got 1 lol, i got myself a ds650 baja model. An boy does it ever rip. It will be well worth it. Down here in Canada they're hard to find. An go for about $4500.
those are powerfull quads. never tried but 650cc is lit
I had one of these I bought that had a blown headgasket. Took it apart to find out someone installed an aftermarket piston in it that pushed the bike up to a 13:1 compression ratio and whoever I got it from ran it on 87 octane! Anyway once I got it fixed it ran awesome these are amazing engines best of luck! Some info on that motor is 1. It's a dry sump engine which is why it's got a oil tank and 2. When you eventually get it together BE SURE to bleed the oil system through the bleed screw behind the oil filter as on that model year specifically it would cause an air lock and oil couldn't get to the motor and it would lock up once you ran it. The later model years had this fixed. Hope this helps!
Is that just inside the filter housing? I just got one last night and I was wrenching on it pretty hard. I think I seen a screw inside there but I was pretty buzzed so I’m not too sure
My first quad was an 01' ds650. An absolute heavy beast but tons of torque and power. I rolled it and ripped the control arms off it then fixed it and the engine seized. Sadly when i got it it was already in really bad shape so it wasnt worth fixing. Bought myself a ktm 525xc to replace it and now i have the ktm and a special edition trx450R sometimes i miss the 650 for running trees over and shit 😂😂
Cars&quads: it looks like a great machine. Hope ya'll were not hurt too bad wrecking the machine.
Just a thought but I'd check the pulse coil/input coil to see if it is picking up spark/signal from the flywheel. I have chased the same problem before (not a DS but same concept) replacing stators, coils, wiring harness ect. It was the input coil the whole time. Good luck brother...I know you'll figure it out. Can't wait.

Wide but damn fast!.Onw of my customers has the same bike, we maintain it. Biggest issue weve seen, over heating, some electrical stuff, nothing major. Enjoy. They rip!!

my dads got a ds650, definitely some real good fun and pretty powerful
check for lose wires and check if the coils are good and if there is a fuse maybe change it

There was some LTR 450 parts in there like the swirl filter and the battery box cover

I had the ds 650 wish i never sold it.. I loved it.. Heave but it rips. Its made for flat track racing. Wish i never sold it.. Your gonna love it

The stater there is a way to test it with a voltage meter touching them to its self for ground it should give u a reading not exactly sure on the numbers I'll take a guess 8 or 9 but would look it up it will tell you if it's bad. Good job on trying to diagnose it step by step . Good luck
If he changed the wiring harness.. you should take off all the plastics and double, even triple check the ENTIRE HARNESS and make sure that everything is connected and etc
My guess is the guy lived near a dealer who had a bunch of these ds quads. The guy who ran the shop may have been the first guy because of all the parts. Sometimes three parts for the same machine. Might just be a guy who was willing to go pickup parts for this machine. The extended axel would increase stability but may be a problem getting through narrow areas between trees. I think I would put on the extended axel, it looks stronger than the one on it. But if it hit a rock from sticking out it would defeat it. This quad could actually take three spark plugs if ya'll really wanted to overdo it. Like another cdi and put it just the other side of the two present. When flying aircraft when flipping to one mag on pre-start the maximum allowed drop was 75 rpm. It almost always dropped right to the limit which means the burn would actually help power with multiple plugs. Not as much as a turbo. The problem with a turbo is the carbureter. It needs to be upstream of the turbo making starting harder. My brothers turbo Corvair never had starting trouble. Today a fuel injector would cure that.
Maybe build the rest of the engine then test for spark? Timing needs set...

Looks like I good buy you got a crazy amount of parts. Those front fenders would come off if it was mine but other than that looks like a clean quad but complicated good luck!!!!
You should get 70 v AC from the stator before the reg/rec

You could need to press the brake and lock it with the lever and that will let it know that it is safe to start like a car
For testing spark a budget way is to get some romex (house electrical wire) and wrap the spark plug with one end and wrap the other end on a ground. The romex is stiff so you can point the plug any direction and makes a hand free guaranteed ground
I see some sort of leakage at the green gasket (24:00 mark) when your cranking it kinda bubbling out. I’d tear it all down just to be on the safe side.

The jug isn't bolted down because the head isn't on it.
@@boobagrx I see know what you mean it looked like to me it was a gasket on the side of the case.
@@msl6027 it is a gasket I was just saying the leakage was because the jug isn't bolted down tight so when the piston is moving it lifts the jug a little bit and pushes stuff out because of compression.

Try putting the motor mounts and bolts back in that motor i bet you will get spark then
My cdi was bad on mine but that may not be your issue. My cdi would get super hot then cut off from no spark.
as far as the wiring harness i think its of a baja or baja x..that year ds didn't come with the triple light set up..it started on the baja
They were a pretty good quad for is time. It was big and heavy it had a decent following here in the states mainly desert riders not much of a woods quad again to big two years and it was basically done when yamaha came out with the 660 raptor.
Chet O raptor came out in 01. The DS came stock with a 49 HP DOHC liquid cooled rotax engine it would smoke a raptor in the dunes stock for stock it has way more top end that they do
@@G.H.O.S.T.F.R.E.A.K I know this but the raptor was a smaller machine more versatile easier to manure jump and easier handling. And no it wrought smoke a raptor in the dunes maybe strights but not jumps or handling i still have the avt action magazine with the shoot out in it. The raptor was a better all around machine and still is. This ds were good but it was a limited machine.
I miss mine so much. Very heavy. I loved it was like wrestling a bear through the woods up here in Maine trying to go full bore down trails.

I was at Birch Creek mx park a long time ago during a quad race that had some good riders included. The race had alot of modded 250rs, banshees, and quadracers. It was one guy on one of these and every time he came through the bottom stretch where there was either a big double or triple (I can't remember) whaam! He would case it. It seemed to have plenty of power but was too heavy! Ha
I saw this on marketplace myself!!! Thought about it....for a bit. Can't wait to see what you make out of her!!

Yes thats your oil fill. Check on how to do the oil change there was something you had to do.. I cant remember

I notice at about 25:00 the gasket had bubbles coming out when u hit the starter so it’s gonna leak
I know after researching and tinkering you usually get them running but honestly I wouldn't have paid much over 300 for it . To many unknowns

It appears someone bought most of another did some work messed it up and then gave up. It appears you bought a good quad it just needs put together. Buying a service manual would be well worth if you've never worked on one of these. I've only seen one of these. A guy I used to ride with in the early 2000s had a brand new one. A 650 was absolutely huge back then. But he couldn't beat me in a 300yd drag against my 400ex. I had cam 440 kit etc though.
To make these things run great you need to adjust the Valves perfectly also for more power need a aftermarket pipe and big gun cdi. Check the ground on the backside right next to the rear brake cylinder.
Matthew DeBerardinis Ron woods makes a CDI that completely takes the rev limiter off. Mine had one on there stock was 7200 rpm and they bumped it up in 01 to 7600 rpm

You have to install the starter in the engine and turn the engine over to get spark. The stator needs to turn over
The shock are original. Get some razor max tires . those do real well on it.. Good luck man. Cant wait to see it running
