Spandau Ballet are one of Britain’s great iconic bands having sold over 25 million records, scored numerous multi-platinum albums and amassed 23 hit singles across the globe since their humble beginnings as a group of friends with dreams of stardom in the late 1970s. It wasn’t long before they became fully-fledged members of the iconic Blitz Club scene and established themselves as one of the super-groups of the 80s.
The band's classic line-up features brothers Gary and Martin Kemp on guitars, vocalist Tony Hadley, saxophonist Steve Norman and drummer John Keeble.
Spandau Ballet’s hits include Gold, True, To Cut A Long Story Short, Through The Barricades and many more.

Lyrics:
I don't have to be so wise
You're just my fantasy and I will fantasize
Something more or less to make this things started
We're the artisans and we've been crafted
I wanna be your magical mystery
I wanna be your final history
This is the news
Nothing's ever been so wild
All that I get to do is what I give to you
This is all about the circles we've found
And through the ups and downs it goes round
Oh, I was just beginning to grow strong
She was only eighteen summers long
Oh, we were the news
Round and round it goes
And oh don't you know
This is the game that we came here for
Round and round it goes
And oh don't you know
Oh I don't have to be so wild
You're just my fantasy and I will fantasize
Something more or less to make this things started
We're the artisans and we've been crafted
I wanna be your magical mystery
I wanna be your final history
This is the news
Round and round it goes
And oh don't you know
Ooh, this is the game that we came here for
Round and round it goes
And oh don't you know
This is the game that we came here for
Round and round it goes
And oh don't you know
Ooh, this is the game that we came here for
Round and round it goes
And oh don't you know
You're just my fantasy and I will fantasize
I wanna be your magical mystery
I wanna be your final history
This is the news of my life
Oh I was just beginning to grow strong
She was only eighteen summers long
We were the news
We were the news
We were the news
Round and round it goes
And oh don't you know
This is the game that we came here for
Round and round it goes
And oh don't you know
Round and round it goes
And oh don't you know
Ooh, this is the game that we came here for
Round and round it goes
And oh don't you know
Round and round it goes
Round and round it goes
And oh don't you know

Can we also recognize what an absolutely brilliant songwriter/lyricist Gary Kemp was?
Who's watching in 2024?
Me.😏
Me
Not me
Me 😀
Always
I love this song so much.Tony Hadley one of the best voices in the 80's.
An absolutely fantastic track from a truly fantastic era. They may be gone but never forgotten. Hail the 1980,s.
You’re just my fantasy and I will fantasise. Great line
There is just something in this song which invokes such strong emotions yet, in some cases, those emotions are intangible. I don't quite know why I feel them but they are there and are so strong it brings tears to the eyes. I think it's because each time I watch that video it takes me back to 1984 when things were so different. Perhaps it's like a little time machine taking me back to a place I still wish I was in. I was fourteen, still at school, reading Smash Hits and No 1 and devouring all those mags had to offer then talking about it the next day. I never thought that 36 years later I would be writing something as emotional about this song but yet here I am. Also, it was the very first 7" single I bought with my own money, too.
Pure brilliance for each member of this band
Brings back so many memories
Actually gets me down sometimes to see how fast life has gone past
one of the best 80s bands EVER and still sound so good today.LEGENDS
so true, YNWA!!
Nirvana
So true 👍👍👍
Micah Reyes That overrated thing is not from the 80s.

Just saw Tony Hadley on Saturday night in Sydney, Australia. Still a brilliant voice and the songs …. takes me back to the 80’s!
The memories on this one are so strong it hurts. I was just a kid back then when it came out. 1984 was THE year of the 80s and the happiest time of my life. Now I wonder what happened to all those friends I left behind in time. This song is for you. A celebration of all those possibilities we once were even if things didn't turn out right.
Wow...I cried reading this
I hear you. There is just something in this song which invokes such strong emotions yet, in some cases, those emotions are intangible. I don't quite know why I feel them but they are there and are so strong it brings tears to the eyes. Just like your comment did.
Left school at 16 in 1984.
You've summed it up absolutely perfectly.
And much didn't turn out brilliantly. In fact lots was a very long way from brilliant but I wouldn't change a single thing if I went back and lived it all again! 😂 💖
Amen, Brother!
Ah Raymond,,I have the same memories and I cherish each one, cheers to you!
Un pezzo indimenticabile !!!
"I wanna be your magical mystery I wanna be your final history" this song still gives me chills. I was in 11th grade when it came out in 1984 such an amazing time to be a teenager!
i so agree. i was in my final year of high school in 1984. best time for music. im having a spandau night on you tube. 😊
So was i
It only proves that Duran Duran & Spandau Ballet were both very popular not only in your country, but likewise in my country... the Philippines in the '80s.
I agree, so many memories of a great time...please cherish each one dear!
I’m the same age as the kids in this video. Had one of those bad helmet haircuts too, we all did.
This band takes me back to sweet and happy times, nothing was like the 80s, been a teenager through to my 20s, falling in love, facing disappointments, this band have all the feelings of been there, spandau thank you for been there
THERE ARE NO WORDS TO DESCRIBE SUCH AN INCREDIBLE SONG!
I adore Tony Hadley's face in this video, especially his eyes- they are so incredibly beautiful, wonderful and spectacular. Tony here looks in such a mysterious way. Everytime when I'm watching this clip, I'm wondering what about he was thinking, during making it. Besides I really love this black and white picture, it's magical and sentimental.🌌💖
Remembering my teenage years--remembering my friends and sometimes wondering if they ever remember me--remember that Halloween party in 1984 in my first year of college when I thought I was in top of the world---wondering why the 80's said goodbye to us and left us with nothing but memories---thinking of those good times that will never come back, and there is nothing I can do about it---Smiling because I know sometimes you all feel the same and we all know that the 80's rocked!!!!!
I am in love with Tony Hadley ❤️😍
Some songs are legendary like this!!!
This is my favourite Spandau Ballet song. Love it.
loved every second of being involved in that vid!! good times, great memories. shame we have to get old!!!
He has a great voice! 80’s 90’s was the best years!
... and 70s
He still has a wonderfull voice
Wow brilliant tune , I was 14 in 1984 , even though I was really young then I can't say I was happier, I'm 53 now and quite happy , for me it's not looking back and saying oh I wish I was back there , embrace life and accept we're older and you'll find peace
Great comment. Same for me. School was out in 86.
BRAVO FOR YOU.WITH YR COMMENT U WISH SATISFIED SOME OF YOUR COMPLEX???
@@vladanjevtic7812thank you for the bravo 🙂 I still love listening to this tune and a lot of 80s,
Same here
Uno dei migliori pezzi dei Spandau !!!
My favorite Spandau Ballet song!
Ma. Michelle Pablo-Norico same!
Mine too, by far.
Mine, too! "True" comes next.
Grazie al caiser! Penso sia l unica che si conosca :)
Pleasure 🍒🍉🍏
When music was something so magical. I miss that time so much. We were so happy and we didn't know it.
Seriously! What were we even worried about back then?
Tenía 19 años cuando estrenaron esta canción. Es una de mis favoritas. Me encanta, es mágica y preciosa.
La música de Spandau Ballet nunca pasa de moda.
Bellissima ❤️
I'm not an Spandau Ballet fan but I really love this song, it's so beautiful itself and musically very professional .
STEVE NORMAN. Seeing this video again after so many years...oh my gosh my heart is a puddle! Steve is perfection.
Hard to believe this song is 40 years old. My cousins from London probably would have seen Spandau Ballet many times in concert, notably Wembley. Gary Kemp is a fab guitarist and his brother Martin can play bass guitar great. Add Steve Norman on saxophone and various instruments, drummer John Keeble and Tony Hadley being a top lead vocalist and what a great 80s group Spandau were.. I know this much is true
Tutt'attorno andava e non te ne accorgevi, dice qst meravigliosa canzone. Peccato che Hadlay abbia lasciato gli Spands
These 80's songs were just so brilliant and too think life was so good then and humanity actually existed amongst us all. We were too busy living and enjoying life rather than hurting and hating each other the way we do these days. I wish we could turn back the clock and bring the wheels of time to a stop just like Johnny hates jazz sung in his song in the 80's too! Memories aye 🎤👤🎷🎸
What a decade to be alive. Just amazing. The memories of being 10 years old and seeing your older sister and her friends being in love with the members of these pop groups, whilst you had a crush on your sisters friends and wanted them to be in love with you, so you did your best to try and look like these grown men lol. And round and round that went.
😍
You sad it perfectly. Used to play this cassette (The Singles Collection) every morning picking my friends up and driving to school in '87. Lost contact with all but one over the years. Like you, everytime I hear a SB song I drift back to 1987-89 and those memeories are so strong it hurts me too. Thanks for your comment.
Like a little time machine😍. Love spandau ballet
This was filmed in my classroom at Godwin jr school in Dagenham.
We were 4th years at the time but the used the 2nd year for the cast.
Needless to say that we were all gutted.
Great song though.
Really?
I never understand the Plot of a music video. And the relation to the song
This was my school Godwin too. Great memories of that day we felt like superstars. The band were great with us kids.x
@@jengopeanut2041 Thank you! I can't figure it out either! But, I'm one of "those" people who is always the last to get the joke... even the plot of a movie, and I SWEAR I'm not "challenged" either lol.
@@sarahbruce6089 That's awesome! So you were in 2nd grade... so you couldn't have possibly understood what the "plot" was, or did you? Because I'd LOVE to understand what it means to this song?
Tony is perfection
So Much talented Tony Hadley... 👍👍👍
Takes me back to my late teens in the 80s...great music...great times!.
LOVE Love Spandau Ballet forever
Kaylene Mcglinn yo también los amo por siempre
Time really changes people and things. I used to not be too fond of this song. Now I can't stop listening to it. Partly because of the memories, partly because it's such a beautiful song.
That B-Side you love more than all the other songs together! Man, I miss my 80's so much that bleeds.
No doubt about it, Tony Hadley was the voice!
Surely their best song , memories of happy care free days when I was young and optomistic and anything was possible , God I miss those days so much , glad I'm not alone
I can't believe this song is almost 30 years old. #feeling old
it is soon to be 31 as Parade was released in 1984..they are great musicians and their lyrics were just so great..
35 years old now - we all feel old
It's only a number.
This entire album is brilliant! I say this as a late 80s baby.
Tony's voice is just ✨❤️
Timeless melody and lyrics. The video is a bittersweet study of the wonders (and terrors) of childhood.
Spandau Ballet forever 😀! I hope Tony Hadley never grows tired of singing their songs 😀!
Ahh the 80s what a wonderful era Spandau ballet my first ever tape i bought wayback 83💕🇵🇭🇵🇭 Love you tony hadley👏💐🥰
My second favourite song after 'Through the barricades' x
This is too adorable... 😇
When music WAS music not the rubbish that passes for it today, awesome time to be young, the 80s
I saw them in Sydney, it would've been 2 years ago now I think. they sound exactly the same on the radio, a true band, not some manufactured boy band. These guys can really perform. Tears for Fears fronted for them. they too sounded the same. again real bands. 80s were full of real bands. I miss the 80s. I was in year 5 when this song came out.

Yes Yes 10 out of 5, harmonies, a melody that gets stuck in your head possibly forever lol, simply a f...can masterpiece 💎🍺
"She was only eighteen summers long" was written on my 18th birthday cake, back when "cake design" at the most consisted in writing "happy birthday (insert your name here)" with chocolate on a cake.. I grew up with this group, learnt english with their songs, went to my first concert (november 10th 1986), visited a foreign country (UK) for the first time, met a celebrity for the first time (them, of course). This song is every bit as beautiful to me as it was 30 years ago. Thank you for posting it.
That's what music does for us. Makes memories and then brings them back for us. Great story about the cake. It is a beautiful song.
Silvia Palandri Hi Silvia, I feel the same you do. Thanks for having shared your though, it is nice knowing one is not alone. And guess a lot more feel like us.
What a beautiful years the 80's. I did the same..concert (unforgettable!!)on Nov. 19 1986 with my first love and yesss I met one of them on a USA-UK flight. It was fantastic!. But my really first time was on July 1985 at Live Aid in London...yessss I was there. Ciao Silvia
nice one Silvia :)
Italiana?
This is the quintessential song thats why l love the ballet and life
Such a bittersweet song for me. I was in high school when I first heard this song, and I had a lot of memories with it. I was bullied a lot, but songs like this got me through it all. Spandau Ballet, Johnny Hates Jazz, Howard Jones, The Bolshoi, and dozens more. They all got me through really tough times.
Yes, not forgetting Duran Duran, Madness, Heaven 17, China Crisis Naked Eyes etc :)
Back in the days when every song in the 80's was magical to hear & each song has their own style. These are timeless songs that never gets old I'm now 52 yrs old but whenever I hear these songs I seem to be going back into memory lane again. 😊🌷🌈
Miss my late husband we were so young and happy in the 80's and what a great time for music!
RIP your husband...
My condolences to you.
My condolences for your loss. Yes, the 80s was a great time for music.
I'm sorry for your loss, but also happy you can enjoy those memories, love to you
So sorry to hear of your loss
una de las mejores bandas de los ochenta.
in the 80's during my college years, female population in my university were divided between Simon Lebon (Duran Duran) and Tony Hadley (Spandau Ballet). Debating on their Music and who's handsome between the two. It is like Manchester United vs Liverpool supporters fighting for their clubs
I'm glad that where I was in the 1980s, most of the people I knew did not really fall in the media-generated battle between bands. Most of us listened to and loved the music of bands like Duran Duran, Spandau Ballet, Culture Club, The Cure, New Order, and Depeche Mode in equal measures.
Each of those bands just happened to fall in the same sonic spectrum, but their individual music inevitably has personalities of their own.
great and moving story here
inoy inoy Simon lbon was a crap singer Tony much better.and more handsome
I thought it always was between John Taylor an Martin Kemp
My vote went to Tony Hadley.
Le Bon couldn't sing!! 😂
Such wonderful memories
Un successo indimenticabile.
Una delle più belle performance dei Spandau Ballet ..🙋♂️🙋♂️👍👍
Damn ... the 80's. Now THOSE were GREAT and MEMORABLE music by highly talented musicians, with great lyrics; none of the high - tech, easy - to - make songs that we have of today. (There was even a "Spandau Ballet vs. Duran Duran" program here in the Philippines then; can you believe it? Btw, Spandau won. ;))
Anyone 2020? ❤️
Me! Tony still sings this song in his solo shows.
August 2020
Me on 06/08/2020 here in P.I.
Yes!!! I love love love this song.
Me, from Italy ciao! Elisabetta ♥️♥️♥️♥️
thanks spandau ballet
11 giugno 2024 sempre innamorata di questo gruppo meraviglioso 😍🥹
Loved them sooooo much !! ( still do ) Why or why cannot we have groups like this now ...pure class ! x
My favourite spandau tune
Pretty cool song. The smooth sounds of Spandau Ballet.
This is my fave Spandau song beautiful melody, amazing lyrics, such pristine vocals. It makes my mind drift back to those 80's years ahh
Claire Bartle Hi Claire, it was my favorite too. Lyrics did touch something, deeply inside me, even if I was so young.
Hi Claire; it was one of my favourites too, and I still fell the same feeling when I listen to that now, in my 40s. Glad to be not alone.
This song has left an imprint on my heart from 28 years ago! Always takes me back. Sigh!
Michele Frame Hi Michele, same thing for me.
I was born in the early 90s but the 80s were the best with the songs Spandau Ballet made back then. This song brought tears of joy in my eyes, reminiscing about the joyful feeling of that time even though I was born in the following decade.
Brividi…ricordo ancora la prima volta che l’ascoltai in macchina di mio padre.. i primi anni 2000..ero un ragazzino e sognavo con questa musica 🎵 😂😍
Ahhhhhhh spandau ballet so cool, loved these songs, and through the barricades classic tunes
Excellent!......Spandau Ballet at their best!
Filipino loves Spandau Ballet! One of my favourite song. Remind me of old times, my time.
kim live same here in Philippines I do love Spandau Balllet
same here, grew up in angeles city, pampanga
Not Filipino, but I will be there soon to enjoy your culture!! Greatings from Brazil
reminds me of our school drama singing this song. miss those days
there are places that we know have changed completely since from the time we were young. but many times when we think of the places from our youth, we remember them the way they were tied to our experiences, not how they actually are today.
my favorite one. And I didnt know how great the videoclip was.
My fav Spandau track. Read Tony Hadleys book, it's amazing. Steve Norman never looks any older. Dorian Grey'?
Yeah, not once did Hadley mention in his book that 'Parade' was his favorite of Spandau Ballet's albums.
I have copies also of the respective books by Gary Kemp and Martin Kemp, which were great reads too. They pretty much remember similar things about their band, and that was good.
Una grandísima canción, cantada por una grandísima voz, y canción de una gran banda.
Tony Hadley looks like the long-lost big brother of Keanu Reeves, they have the same handsome face and are both a talented man.
Love the shot of the brothers playing side stepping, goofing...beautiful connection captured.
Love this song. I will always be so glad that I grew up in the 80's, damn it was awesome. The golden era of arcade games (which continued into the early 90's, of course) and some of the best music ever. I loved music as a kid. I was 3 when I started playing records. I still have a vivid memory of my wonderful mother taking me me to the local shopping centre on my fourth birthday to buy me ABBA's Super Trooper and KISS: Unmasked. I will also always be glad that the Australian music scene was dominated by the UK bands of the time along with many fantastic Aussie bands that never made it big overseas.
My record collection was pride and joy. Due to circumstances beyond my control, I lost almost all of it 15 years ago. As soon as the 90's hit, I rapidly went off music. It was a shit decade for music and it has never stopped being shit for me. The only CD's I bought post 1994, were Bon Jovi CD's.
+A Shaw Lovely what you said about your mom. How sweet.
👍xx
I'm jealous. I was born 1992 and I Love the 80s. The Music Today is so terrible.
I was lucky to be growing up in the 80's. It was the best period of my life. It was a time of positive social change, and the decade of damned good music.
R.I.P David Bowie :( Ashes to Ashes has always been one of my favourite songs, even if the video clip freaked the hell out of 3 year old self, lol. He had one of THE eightiest of eighties sounds. He was and amazing artist. I still remember seeing Labyrinth when it was first release at the cinemas.
Love this song! They are a great band and I love Tony's voice!
80's was such a sweet time... life was simpler then...
Anyone in 2023? ❤ What were we even worried about back then?!?
Crazy days ahead. Stay strong.
The early 1980s and the British bands then were the best.Beats anything going on in the culture now....If I could jump into a machine and go back to being in my body then, would do it in a second.
What a song , the 80s was class
nice to see 80's good looking guys
I Love these Guys. I have met them Many Times and They are All Tough & Sweethearts. ALL. Thank you Spandau. You Help to connect me to The GREAT Hearts and Spirits of Us All
I wish it was that good when
I went to school.
Magical Mystery
So much Fun!
Anyone 2019? ❤️
Me sadly to say tony hadley. Dis band to the group.
Here. I remember back in the 80's, when on Philippine radio, they'd have this Spandau Ballet vs. Duran Duran thingy going on. Who won? Was it Spandau Ballet?
@@Spy359 its funny they compared 2 bands that are not similar, but they are the most popular that time
The 1980s brings back such strong memories of hair style, fashion, high school, romance, political reformation, and GREAT MUSIC. For those in their 50s, you know what I mean.
Their storytelling in a song is amazing plus a really cute video like a cherry on top of british ice cream cake. Man i miss d 80s!
Tony, you are remembered and loved in Russia. from Russia with great love for you, our hero! We love you Tony and will always love you!
Indeed, Tony. Some day we may even help you get rid of your nazis!
in only live in the 80s.....cause it was the BEST times ever...never forget
A PHENOMENAL band with awesome songs!
The girl at 2.07 putting the tiara on the little girls head, is my mums friend, who went on jim will fix it and starred in this music video !! Thankfully she was okay, however after this song came out i recall my mum saying her friend hated spandau ballet after haha !!! great song !!!
rosie iveson I was her best friend, her name was Helen Elmer & we went to secondary school together in Stevenage, the other girl in the video was our other best friend called Jannette, we all lived down the road from each other
