    DBK, as a retired Active Duty US Marine (not a desk jockey, but a Marine that actually spent years in the field), I loved this video! It was hilarious and I don’t feel this video was insulting or an unfair test. I personally carried this knife and do love it; but I agree that it will not perform as good as other modern day survival knives since the original design was focused on only slashing and stabbing human flesh. I’m a new subscriber and love how interesting you two make your videos; they always make me laugh.

    This knife was based on a hunting knife originally created by the union cutlery company back around the turn of the century.
    This knife was originally designed to process game in a time when people were smart enough to carry an axe or hatchet as well as a multi bladed folder such as a cattle knife in their pocket.
    It's not going to be the best knife for wood craft or abuse in a " survival " situation.
    When the USMC adopted it they just wanted a good utilitarian knife that could also serve well for combat use if need be.
    It wasn't expected to be able to be hammered through a log like so many today seem to think is somehow the measure of a knife.

    Got my fathers kbar he had on his side when he was in Vietnam going up and down the rivers in the Brown Water Navy. Only 2 things I asked for before he passed. His kbar and the American flag that saved his life that has bullet holes, shrapnel holes and his blood on the silk Flag he, and now I own. That flag was hanging on his boat when they got hit with a mortar, killed everyone but him on his boat, thankfully he was changing the barrel of his gun, when the mortar blew him off the boat into the flag and as his body and flag hit the rivers water the flag had wrapped itself around his body and created a make shift life preserver and kept him afloat and alive. The next boat picked him up little later with the flag and my father said last thing he remember was waking up in the hospital they had there and the flag was given to him with the story about it saving his life and he needed to keep that flag.. that flag is only reason my father, my brother, me and all our children are alive today. So it means a lot to us. Since I was the only one as of now who went thru the military I got his Flag and his K bar. My father lived with shrapnel lodged in his spine for rest of his life from that explosion, yet he was put bk into Vietnam just a few months after that incident.

    I learned my lesson the hard way - the Ka-Bar is NOT designed for bushcraft or survival. It is a fighting knife. I used the Ka-Bar to baton a wrist thick sapling and it bent severely at the tang. I had a buddy who’s USMC and he always said the Ka-Bar could pry open anything, not true. It has a rat tail tang, very thin metal. However, I love the Ka-Bar, I was gifted one for Christmas 09’ and loved the smell of the leather handle.

    Getting a Ka-Bar blade between the ribs is not going to make the receiver of such a stab upset because he got stabbed with an inferior knife.
    The greatness of a knife is not found in the hardness of the steel or sharpness of the blade. It is found in the ability to serve the user well, and no other knife has served so many Marines as well as the Ka-Bar (and the Navy and Army equivalent knives that served their own services).
    I still have my USMC issued Ka-Bar and I use it more than any other knife I have ever owned (besides my kitchen knives of course). I have a couple of fun little OTF knives, but for really serious stuff, I would take a Ka-Bar over most others. Not that it is the best knife, but it is the knife I know best.

    This was a great video, I think any real knife lover knows that knives are designed with a purpose in mind, the kabar is a fighting knife that can be sharpened to razor sharp levels but by no means is it a prying tool or a survival knife. It's good for cutting, stabbing, and ok for chopping and batoning but not really ideal for bushcraft tasks. It's like a hunting rifle vs an pistol, two very different purposed weapons that could technically fill in for eachother in some instances but it's not ideal.

Working in the hunting guide and outfitting buisness were I am out in the bush for weeks and months at a time, I never do chopping/feather sticks/batoning..maybe field dressing, skinning, harvesting birch bark, gutting fish, cutting ropes strings, and carving points/ notches could be some additional regular tests?

    DBK- A true American classic. I have a friend who did two tours in Vietnam. He used his Ka-Bar a lot, mostly for utility tasks like opening cans, cutting rope and wire. He was on sniper duty with another Marine and an NVA patrol walked past them (they were in a tree). The patrol walked on without detecting them. Then some old lady comes along and sees them. The patrol was now some distance away and she starts yelling to them. My friend"s fellow sniper jumped from the tree and put his Ka-Bar through the top of her head. He couldn't get it out and my buddy said, "I'll buy you a new one, lets get out of here". Two years ago he brought his Ka-Bar over. He never maintained it or sharpened it once. It was the first time it had been out of its sheath since the War. He asked me to clean it up for him. The dirt on it was from Vietnam. Remarkably, it was still in good shape. No rust or pitting. The stacked leather (it was always black back then) was in good shape too. It was an honor to clean that knife.

    • @shino8854
      @shino8854 Před 5 lety

      Is this a true account?? Tree's are one of the worst places for a sniper to hide in, for one staying hours up on a tree in recon mode or active target placement is not comfortable or stable. Extraction and relocation after a shot has been taken from up a tree is slow and painstakingly loud, not really a Snipers forte.
      The fact 'some old lady' actually saw them seems to suggest that cover and concealment is not the best place up on a tree.
      Can't imagine Carlos Hathcock 'The white feather' greatest US sniper in the Vietnam war up on a tree, in fact in his autobiography states that trees are the worst place for a sniper to be in.
      Also killing an 'old lady' by stabbing her on top of the head with his knife....doesn't seem to proud of a moment, so either you are bullshitting or your 'friend' has to be the worst sniper ever and lucky to be alive, and a killer of old women which you perceive to be honor.....

    • @MrGeerbear
      @MrGeerbear Před 5 lety

      @@shino8854 I clarified with my friend and he said it wasn't true sniper duty as that wasn't their MOS. They were doing perimeter duty some distance from their base. They were two
      guys in a tree, using sniper tactics. One is a spotter and the other the shooter. By old he meant 45 years old or so. That is old when you are 18. The woman was yelling to the
      patrol. What were they supposed to do, offer her tea? She was trying to expose them which would have been deadly to them. War is war and that woman showed which side she
      was on. He never said it was honorable or that he was proud. Those are your words. It was just survival. Who are you to judge? Have you ever been in that situation Mr. I read a
      book? Carlos Hathcock was a great sniper and a hero. By your standards he must be dishonorable because he didn't warn the people he was going to shoot.

    Still made in the same factory in Olean, New York state. Can get US Army markings (US ARMY), USMC markings (USMC), US Navy markings (USN), and, US Coast Guard markings (USCG). Don't know why there is not a US Air Force marked Kabar. Should be USAF.
    An all leather sheath with the service branch stamp. US Army has the American Eagle, US Marines has the Eagle, Globe and Anchor. US Navy has the same Eagle the is on the Navy's flag. The US Coast Guard has crossed oars with a rescue buoy in the background.
    The hilt hand protector has an intentional 8° bend. This added at the factory. If you get a real Kabar you will have that 8° bend. It was wasn't dropped.
    There is a full tang that goes though the handle and the steel pommel. Has a think pin that goes through the pommel to fasten. The all leather hand grip is compressed leather. I have never lost my grip with my Kabar.
    The story of the origins of Kabar was from a letter from a customer. The guy could barely write so the letter was difficult to read. There was a sentence that was supposed to be "Kill a bear." Most of the letters were unintelligible. So it was written like "K??? A bar." So Kabar was derived from "Kill a bear."
    Have had the US Army stamped Kabar for years. A perfect knife.
