    Matt said something about finding your gear and I had a flash of an idea. Buoy's with a little transponders broadcasting a code specific to you, kinda like IFF in the aircraft world, at either the head or tail end of the set. You home in on the buoy beeping your code and start hauling. Something like that shouldn't be terribly expensive and save wearying your eyes searching for buoy floating in big ocean.😀

  • @flyingbeaver57
    @flyingbeaver57 Před rokem

    Looks like a good day on the water, with some nice looking halibut jumping on board for the ride. They look to be good sized fish, but not barn doors. You've mentioned before that these are decent size halibut to be hauling in. Looking at some of the "once in a lifetime halibut fishing trip" videos, they need 3-4 people to get the darn fish on deck. Then the fish thrash around with so much power that people can get hurt if they're unlucky or just happen to be in the wrong place. A clout like that would probably take some of the fun out of a day, if nothing more serious. Then there are the people who show up from far away and go out on a paddle board with a kids' spin-casting rig from Wal Mart. "Of course It'll be no worry to haul in a 200 pound (or bigger) halibut on a 10-pound line and riding a styrofoam surfboard." Sigh. (We get them too - "Oooh, that bear/moose/elk is soooo cute. . etc.").
    It's a pleasure to watch you all working together, getting the line sets in without a lot of drama or wasted motion. Hope your season goes on as it's started - good fishing and nice days. Cheers from northern Alberta.

    Question: Do you ever have to sharpen your hooks? If one of your "skates" is 600' you might have 50-60 hooks per skate (guessing).....so, hook sharpening could be a significant chore.

    • @EISAlaska
      @EISAlaska  Před rokem +1

      It happens occasionally Brad. We have a short piece of line with a loop of chain spliced to it that we pass around our longline, "choking it", and secure to our vessel. Then we can cut our line and allow the crossed over one to go back down. A quick love knot joins the two ends back together and we start hauling again.

    • @EISAlaska
      @EISAlaska  Před rokem

      Seven hour soak on the first set Paul. Next sets get a little longer as it takes longer to pull than set out. Five hours in this area is usually enough time as little bait comes back and the gear seems to fish fast here.

      Hi Kerry. If you are asking about the length of the season, halibut fishing opens early March and runs into November. Not sure the exact date it closes this year. We fish on an Individual Fishing Quota system, so we have a set amount of halibut we can harvest each year.

    • @EISAlaska
      @EISAlaska  Před rokem

      Sorry, I missed that. The line is very durable and will last well over ten years if fished on softer bottom. Rocky, hard bottom can chafe the line and wear it out faster, but should still last quite awhile, at least 5-6 years. It also depends on how much gear you fish.

    • @EISAlaska
      @EISAlaska  Před rokem

      The tension of the snap keeps them in place on the line. They will slide occasionally, mostly when we get snagged in the rocks and they slide along and pile up until we pull free.

  • @michaelcarlson8622
    @michaelcarlson8622 Před rokem +1

    When you pull the gear do you pull it from the starting end, so the soak time is balanced out over the set depending how long it takes to pull the gear?

    • @EISAlaska
      @EISAlaska  Před rokem

      No, we try to pull from the end that will allow us to drift down the gear, with the tide and/or wind. Soak time gets longer for the last sets in the water and as long as little or no bait comes back a longer soak does not matter. If we start pulling and lots of bait is untouched, we will put the anchor back on and drop it back down to allow for more soak time.
