  • I decided to ask myself the question "Which Leonardo fountain pen model is best"? I just got my new Supernova and put it up against the other models. I unbox it, talk about the parts and features of the pen, provide some size comparisons and measurements, and then do a writing sample. After the writing sample, I talk about what I like and what I don't like about the pen. Please feel free to use the chapters provided below to skip to various parts of the review.

There is no question Leonardo is a great line of pens. The best, in my humble opinion, is whichever one somebody would like to gift me 😊

I keep seeing a Mosaico in Hawaii blues. Little bars of blue with a very intentional brickwork pattern. My heart palpitates a little every time it shows on a CZcams vid.😍😊

Nice pen. If Asvine wouldn’t be making very similar pen of same quality for one sixth of Leonardo price I would definitely consider it.

I have so many Leonardo pens that I couldn’t bear to part with that my favorite depends more on my mood for the day given they all write like a smooth and wet dream. So it’s more a matter of which nib I feel like using. For looks, my blue Art Deco has the edge.

Hey Doug, great overview of the Leo line. Don’t have one yet. I went a little nuts with pas gas last year with penbbs, jinhau and moonman. I do need a pen display of some sort for my desk. Got any recommendations? As for a Leo, I am tending towards an MZ of some denomination.

My Leonardo Mosaico Hawaii will always be my most personal pen as it was my first fountain pen as an adult after a long hiatus from school days. Lots of his models are absolute beauties, I would have loved an ebonite he had in pink, green and blue but that one has silver hardwear and I love gold.

In Leonardos' website, their special editions have a model called the Fioritura. Looks like another brand with the fancy cap band but with a different section shape.....the ebonite barolo looks luscious!

I'm lucky to own a Leonardo Art Deco. It is quite a big pen, making my Conid Kingsize even seem small, but the ebonite makes it not overly heavy. Absolute delight of a pen.

  • @JohnBarrow1961
    @JohnBarrow1961 Před 5 měsíci +1

That really is a beautiful material. Of all my Leo's, my favorite is a Furore Grande with a medium steel nib and ebonite feed in Blue Positano. I love the shape of the pen plus it's easily the best writer of the 4 Leo's I currently own. Unfortunately, writing performance has been inconsistent with the various models. I also like the MZG model as well as the MZG 2.0, which I have in the Sea Anemone finish that is spectacular to behold. I don't have any of the regular MZ's or Furore's yet.
I do like broad nibs, but the two I have from this brand have a stubbish quality that is not my favorite. If I want a stub, that's what I'll buy, otherwise I prefer them to remain round. I agree that the Furore is underrated and wish they'd focus on releasing more iterations in that model. It's sleek and streamlined and looks really cool, and this from someone who tends to avoid cigar shaped pens unless they really grab me. I love writing with mine because it works so damn well.
It's a great brand and they release a lot of beautiful resins. Thanks for the review, Doug!

I have a Supernova with the same trim but a different color. It is one of my favorites. I am not a fan of the step as I find it sharp, but that pen could grow teeth and bite me every time I use it, and I wouldn't care. It's a gem.

That ink color is perfect with that pen color. 😍 And the pen is gorgeous, even though amber is not my fave. This one could change one's mind.

Thank you for another informative and thorough review! I find the side-by-side comparisons (capped and uncapped) very helpful :) There's another Leonardo model that wasn't mentioned -- the Messenger, which came out in 2020. It's still available on the company's official site, but you have to find it using their search function.

Makes sense, I guess, but I thought I’d mention it as there are a small handful left on the company’s site. I saw one at a pen club meeting and the person that owned it said it was made to be a more economical model. It was thinner than the MZ/Furore models.

I have what I call the MZG 1.5. It has the barrel grip section but no ink window. I do miss the window as I have run out of ink mid-sentence a few times but the pen is glorious, nonetheless.
I also have a Furore. It came with a steel nib and I did get a separate gold nib.
I will seriously look at the Supernova. The resin is gorgeous.

Hi..I have that exact same pen…same nib and trim. I love it. I had to take a break from buying Leonardo’s. LOL. They are all just so gorgeous..I’m trying to find a nice display box for my desk but I have not yet found one I like, so they are all hiding in a pen case. 😂

Furore all the way! I like the Aquapietra with Rose Gold nib option. If it's the girth, length and weight of PenBBS 308, I can use it for writing. For sketching, it has to be slim Japanese pocket pen with gold nib, 13g.

  • @bradbeth63

Great video Doug. I have a Leonardo Momento Grande in Sea Anemone with Fine nib, a Special Edition Momento with yellow/black ebonite and a Leonardo flex nib, and Leonardo Spaghetti Sand with architect nib. All are very nice looking pens but my favorite writer is a toss up between the flex and architect nib. All steel nibs and they are smooth. I consider these reasonably price for the quality. Not sure the extra cost for gold is worth it. I have 4 Pelikan 800’s, MB 149 and the Shaffer Legacy 2 - all gold nibs. How many do you need? But I am close to pulling trigger on a Supernova. Maybe sell the Sea Anemone first. Be well!

I have some serious Leonardo envy here. I have been eyeing these pens for a while and planned to take the dive last fountain pen day. But I held myself back because at the time, I felt I was acquiring pens too fast. For months I wanted the Gaida green one because it reminds me of my birthstone. It goes in and out of stock and I guess i was too undecided on nib size. Plus there are so many lovely acrylics to choose from. I also love that Blue Hawaii. Which one should be my first? Lol😂. Lately I have been saying next sale I will go for it, whichever acrylic is available. Plus Goldspot and Endless Pens have some awesome special exclusives.

    • @InkquiringMinds

Leonardo is now my favorite pen brand, with the purchase of the MZ Nebulosa Laguna. How do you account for the resin in your new pen, being the same as in the Chinese pens? Are the Chinese buying Italian made resin? I'd be seriously disappointed if I found out that Leonardo has outsourced the production of some of their pens.

    • @InkquiringMinds

They are really apples and oranges. The m200 is a #5 nib, the MZ is #6. The M200 is a piston filler, the MZ is CC. The MZ is larger than the M200. I like the MZ. The M200 is too small for my hand.
