Shadow Systems - DR920P Review - Ridiculously fun, ridiculously effective

- The Shadow Systems Corp DR920P is their new top of the range compensated 9mm pistol. The compensator is large and aggressive - and after break in - will run just about any 115 range load. Super fun gun.
The pistol is provided by Shadow Systems Corp for testing and evaluation purposes to produce this video.

We need a series where you run 9mm major through regular guns until they fail. The "Tony Wong" test.
I like my hands too much
Lmao
Or call it the Kentucky Ballistics test...
@@TheHumbleMarksman so I recently got a 92x performance and know it has the chunkier slide. Is there any spring/barrel swaps you can use to make it shoot 9mm major? I've heard some people saying they use it in major and don't want to know up the gun
What about Anthony wite?
So this was my first "modern" handgun, I bought it as my home state of WA passed their AWB, f*** you inslee and furguson, before that I had been practicing pistol shooting with my surplus mk 3 Hi Power, and I couldn't hit anything consistently. The 920P didn't magically fix my issues with pistols, but it did give me obvious feedback so I could fix the issues myself: didn't go fully into battery? Limp Wristed, didn't hit my mark? Look at how the red dot lines up with how I'm aiming. It also helped me practice clearing jams quickly. The only things I've done to it so far is swap in the 15 lb spring, swap the mag release around cause left eye dominance, and swap out the stock back strap with one of the provided options. The only things I want to do is get a light for it, ambi mag release, cause I've been practicing both sides, and swap the trigger out, 4.5-5lbs isn't bad, especially compared to my Hi Power, but it'd be nice. And I won't lie, there is a bit of satisfaction when somebody at my range days wants to try it out, and can't run it properly, and then I just burn a whole mag with no issue and mostly accurately.
Washingtonian here. F*** inslee he doesn’t live in the real world
Another great video. Best channel out there. I see your gearing up for that enclosed red dot comparison video. Don’t forget the 509 ACSS Vulcan. It’s great for awkward shooting positions some classes put you thru. Great review and now we need to see the radiant ramset and afterburner comp review!!
I was just looking for good videos on the pistol 2 days ago.. perfect timing!
Nice review, looks very enjoyable to shoot, I recently picked up
a Staccato P with the Dawson precision ice comp, it is incredible
Digging it with closed red dot , people say they are ugly, but I digging them.
Got the Steiner because couldn’t find the arco, but no regrets
Keep’em coming
Awesome review, as always. This is my EDC and I love it. I was excited to see you review it.
I don't believe you
Love your channel. Been following almost since the beginning. Smart…and that’s refreshing in gun culture.
147 gr JHP’s are my jam. A good suppressor load for suppressed 9mm, also, issued Glock 9mm ammunition for the entire time I used a G19/26 G17/26. Years of that and that Gold Dot/Ranger 9mm is a staple.
Surprised I found this channel recently you are solid gold my friend
Much appreciated!
Perfect timing I was just looking at one of these yesterday..
I'm really glad you did the discussion about ammo, I was really confused why a gun that shot so laser straight and felt so good was FTFing on my range loads, now I know what to tweak to get it working well.
Did it work? What ammo worked best for you?
@@hodgesfotyllp I ended up getting a 15lb spring, it shoots everything I've put through it.
Brilliant BDE testing and demonstration of comp testing.
I got the mr920 a few months before this was released and I was a little bummed I didn’t know it was coming. But my patients paid off because SS just released their comps and I got one and installed it the other day and it’s awesome.
I might pick up one for my MR920
I have a Shadow Systems Mr920L. Put the dr920 threaded barrel in it, the 15lbs spring, and a killer innovations glock compensator. Has a weapon mounted light.
It's a sowing machine with 115g blazer brass, 115g Norman. It really shines with +p loads (but they're expensive). Best pistol I have.
Can confirm shadow system comped guns are sweet
Get an inexpensive reloader and load your own. You can run high charges of super slow powders combined with light bullets and really work it.
Just to build on Humbles opening illustration, those targets have a TON of pasters covering up past shots so they are no where near as durable as when they were a new target with no bullets holes. Which makes his illustration even more impactful with the comp at that close distance doing nothing to the target. That’s friggin’ impressive….
This is perfect for Modified to make a come back. Yes, the carry comp thing is overdone yet keeps increasing as a production halo feature. I think of it as “everyday Open”. The pinned comp or the slide overhang as comp is attractive for anyone that’s dealt with carbon lock.
Just found one of these at my lgs used cant wait to get it to the range.
Thanks for making this video 🤙🏽🤙🏽
i learned alot great video hopefully going to get this gun tomorrow. subscribed
I can 100% tell a difference with the DR920P. My EDC is the XR920 with the Radient Ramjet and afterburner combo. What a difference. I have a regular XR920 and you can definitely feel the difference
I'm tempted to edc the DR920p with a mr920 frame, no magwell and tlr7a
Good video. It kinda changed my mind about having a comp on that gun. I'm not gonna say which way my mind went. He talked about some very important aspects I understand better now.
Love the Buc-ee's cap! 👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾
Just purchased thank you 🙏🏾
That barrel is sweet thanks for the video.
There’s something about your aesthetic on the range that truly screams DAD lmao
You remind me of the old videos of competitive shooters
Everyone else looks like a crappy bass fisherman so I decided might as well make it look fun / funny
Looking extra dapper today Dave.
I have the DR920P and an OZ9C w/ X Grip and Zev comp. According to the Mantis X the Zev is only very slightly flatter. Take away the steel chassis and I am sure it would be the other way around. Keep up the great content and let's get Dave to 250k subs people.
Great review David! Don't care for glocks grip angle, so I'll never have one, but if they used Sig grips with their slide/ barrel, I would get one of those for sure. Have an awesome weekend!
They come with 3 different backstraps that mimic Glock, S&W MP, and 1911 style grip angles so you can adjust it as you see fit.
Yeah their backstraps are designed to change grip angle rather than just fill the palm more or less
This has a backstrap that mimics the Sig grip angle.
The other also mimics an M&P grip angle. Best of all worlds.
Love my DR920P. I couldn't run my 115gr plinking rounds that I shoot out of my x5 legion but then again I can air rack the x5. I shoot 124gr with the 15pound spring and it runs perfect. It is also my edc and I carry +p ammo
Like a lot of gun dorks nowadays, I've been a big fan of competition-style guns because of the John Wick films. I've been looking for a pistol that works as a sort of jack-of-all-trades piece for EDC, home defense, recreational plinking, etc. But I couldn't decide which aesthetic I wanted to chase after: the Gucci Glock 34, or the internally compensated Pit/Sand Viper 2011s. The DR90P caught my eye because it asks the age old question: _"¿Por que no Los dos?"_
Hey David......I finally got my DS9 HYBRID and I was wondering what competition holsters should I be considering.....keep the awesome content rolling....!
What is the holster for?
I’d like to see how that runs vs the Rival metal or PDP pro? PDP pro reviews are weirdly scarce but that new dynamic performance trigger looks sweet.
PDP Pro trigger is sick. My first 5 shots went through the same hole. I have not tried a compensator on it yet, but imagine it would definitely help with recoil.
Love your content..!
So what competition holster did you use with the DR920P..?
Awesome BDE video and Bucees Hat 🧢!!
I have a scew on sigle port Disruptive Defense compensator for my Canik Combat Executive and its almost idetical to this in that its one singke large upward port. Works extremely well ! Makes +P 9mm feel like 380. Also zero malfunctions except for when a newbie shooter friend limp wristed it
Great gun, I've been shooting my DR920P since August of 2022. Initially I used 115G and 124G ammo to get passed the break in period. I have always used the 18lbs spring. At the 500 round mark I also shot a box of 70 grain Winchester practice ammo. I was curious how far my grip would need to fail before the gun malfunctioned. I significantly limped wristed the DR920P a few times and got a stove pipe and FTF on the 70grain box. I shot the other 48 rounds of that box with no issues. I am now around the 1,000 round mark on my DR920P and it has been excellent all the way. I run mine with an X300 Turbo and a 3.25 RMR. With that I was able to land two rounds back to back on a chest sized steel target at 150 yards. I also use my DR920P as a duty weapon while at work, it has never let me down.
What weight recoil/ guide rod spring do you run ? 15 pound ??
Do you mind sharing what 115grain and 124grain ammo you use for range use? I own this pistol too, and loading 115gr PMC and 115gr blazer I experience the occassional stovepiping. the 115gr PMC I experienced 4 stovepipes on the clock using the 15lbs spring. went and sent shadow systems an email and asked what they think is the most reliable setup with a Holosun 509 ACSS. Nothing. I've got 124gr igman that so far has been moderately reliable. more testing needed of course, but i'd be interested know what's considered "reliable".
I've shot a mixed bag of grains and brands. Winchester White Box 115 is a large majority of what I shoot. I've also shot 124 grain, fiocci, Winchester, blazer (can't remember the grain) and another I can't remember at this time. I haven't experienced any performance differences. But I also haven't tested or looked for performance issues.
@TheHumbleMarksman Great video!!! Do you have the opportunity to compare this to the OG Rolando 'Especial? I have a faux RS and it's like shooting a .22. I'm sure there's I'd a ton of folks out there with similar builds that would enjoy the comparison.
Wow! Impressive, and I don't mean the gun, although the gun is impressive as well, I'm referring to the "50% speed-saturation boosted" FANTASTIC!. I've wanted to visualize this phenomenon ever since becoming intrigued with compensators. Very well done indeed!
I have settled on a Canik Rival Steel as my next pistol. It makes the 43 oz IDPA weight limit. The Sig p320 XS Legion appears to be a touch too heavy. IMO 40 to 43oz is the sweet spot for SSP. OTOH I made Master in SSP and ESP with my gen 3 35. Also made Limited Master in USPSA with it.
I don't understand any of the science of compensators/slide weight/bullet weight/etc, but I appreciate the explanation. I look at it like the fancy cylinder/turbo/etc technology in my vehicle....I don't understand it, but I know it works (120k on my truck with only regular/scheduled maintenance).
I'll see if I can help.
Normally all of the gas exits the muzzle directly away from you. This causes an equal force to be pushed back against the barrel which will push back the slide and cycle the gun.
By having a compensator (or muzzle brake though those work a bit differently), there is less gas exiting the end of the muzzle which means less force is applied rearward. Ideally a muzzle device would result in no gas going forward, but this wouldn't work for handguns since they're recoil operated. Would be perfect for a blowback I imagine.
To sum it up, taking away gas going forward means less force is applied in the opposite direction. It doesn't really matter if the compensator has a port on the top or ports on the side, but most handguns tilt up; so venting gas upwards helps offset that motion.
I'm going to have to pick one of these up. I'd be very interested to see how it compares to my Glock 17 Gen 5 that was worked over by Agency Arms. Mine has their 2 chamber compensator so I'm curious to compare it to the large single port of the dr920p.
Please do that and hit me up with what you think.
I’m wary of comps with a port big enough to catch brass… I’ve seen them land in there before, lucky both times it was caught before another round was fired.
DR920p, awesome gun you will get fast at clearing malfunctions
Love your videos and buy my red dots based on your review because they are so informative. Would love your advice picking between the DR920P, canik rival s and canik tti. Any thoughts would help. Looking for best and most fun shooting. Thanks
If you want a heavy gun - Rival S - if you want a fast gun - DR920P
Is that the 509T elite x2? Any issues running it the way it mounts to the pistol? Planning on picking up my 920p next month!great video!👏👍
No issues so far
As always, I enjoy your vid's and the info. I do hgave two but's here. Most of the top competition builders, especiallly comped o nes tell us that the 147 gr. faster powder loads produce superior results as the gas is escaping the comp at a faster rate under higher pressure. I offer Atlas as one of the top makers making such a statement.
No the biggest issue is pistol shooters with dot's seem to not know much about optics and how to care for them. In high end long gun optics it is common knowledge to never/ever touch the lens with a finger, or even so much as a paper towel. The hand has both salt and range grit on it which damages the lens coatings very quickly. Not to mention the smudges lessen the amount of light that can pass thru the optic. Not to mention what it can do to the optics resolution. Yet I keep seeing handgun shooter break all the well documented rules by using the face and therefore the lens to manipulate the slide. Terrible habit! ;
So the 147 fast powder thing is patently wrong from compensated guns. It’s volume of gas through volume of port run against spring rates. Out of uncompensated guns - yes 147 fast- but I know the atlas team and what they shoot - it’s not 147 with fast powder. And I counter your atlas with Infinity and Bul. Their prescription differs.
Yeah also seems opposite to what I know. My comped PCC runs best on 115 grain, my mr920 runs flattest on fast powder 147
All I want for (next) Christmas is a steel frame DR920.
Agreed. Has there been any rumors about them producing a steel frame?
@@brianjkeene Not that I'm aware of.
I agree. The dust covers on ss pistols sag pretty low compared to other polmer pistols.
If you took the comp off could you run this in carry optics? Just curious.
thinking about joining my local pd and would be awesome if they allow this as a duty weapon. probably not but we can hope!
Don’t be a henchmen for the state. Gross.
I love mine now but boy that break in was a tough one
This wasn’t to bad - I switched to 15# immediately and a magazine of 9maj might have accelerated things
How does this compare to the Zev with the 4 ports in the barrel?
If you've shot both that is.
Good review!
I have a question, and if you could respond that would be awesome! I’m wanting to get into competitions locally at my local range, and I’m looking at either 1911 Prodigy 4.25, SS DR920P, or SS MR or XR 920 with radian raptor ramjet combo, and even Glock 19 or 45 with ramjet combo.
Out of those choices which one do you think would be the best for a beginner trying to get their feet wet in shooting competitions? I’ve only shot one competition at my range, and came in dead last in the irons division. I was running a Taurus G2C, because it was the largest gun I own (all others were micro 9’s), and it malfunctioned twice, and had only 12 rounds. Other competitors had larger Glock’s or Staccato’s with 17+ round magazines.
IDPA - any of the non comp’d guns - USPSA- XR in carry optics
@@TheHumbleMarksman
Okay, thank you. I’ll look all those terms up, I know they are competitive divisions.
Right now I’m just trying to get my confidence up at a non formal competition at my range.
Thanks for the super quick reply!
Can you do a review of the RIA 5.0?
Would u be able to compare the 920 L vs the 920 P from experience? Was pretty set on the 920L at first , but I’d like to get a opinion on someone whose possibly shot both. Trying to dip my toes into competition shooting and all though I don’t have 2011 funds I can make a 920P or L work just fine getting into it. Great video. Thanks.
P is better if you are shooting IDPA, L can pull double duty well enough
I would love one. not available yet in the Philippines. come shadow system. bring it here lol
How is the trigger? I had two a combat and an elite. I was not happy w/ either of the triggers
Wonder why they went with that guide rod design?
My EDC was the SS DR920 and i thought it was a great shooter UNTIL…I recently picked up a Prodigy 4.25 and wow was there a big difference. The prodigy was so much easier to shoot and stay on target. I guess the extra weight made all the difference. Still dig the look of the SS tho.
I just picked up the gun, amazing at the range. But I'm having difficulty finding a holster that would fit it. Any recommendations would be great
Do you have a Glock 34 holster you can check it on? It fits my 34 holsters
I plan on shooting regular 115g target rounds pretty exclusively. Should I switch the spring to the 15lb right away? There may be some rare occasions that I shoot 124g target rounds but is the 15lb spring the one that is best for all types?
Yes. IMO there isn’t a point to the 18#
So would 124 nato be a good regular ammo to feed it to get lower recoil, or would you go with the 115 after break in?
Depends what you're doing - 124 nato would be like a range load in another gun - the 115s are a little softer but floppier sort of - it's difficult to describe.
Still waiting for mr920 length gun built around this comp, allowing me to use mr920 length holsters = best carry pistola. #shadowsystems
For USPSA the DR920P can only be used under Open Div, right? Even though the comp is built in?
Yes can be an open gun
Would making the frame heavy on this help with recoil?
It's kinda in between a g17 and g34 , but closer to the g34. Atleast I think lol
Greatness
Curious on your race pistol, do you run a closed emitter or open?
Open
Is this the gun you'd recommend for a new comp shooter/steel target plinker, or is there something else in the price range?
This is good for IDPA CO or open steel challenge - the Rival S is pretty good
With my AR I can tell by how over or under gassed I am by the way the brass ejects. Can you do the same thing with a handgun?
Yes
I want to see a comparison between the DR920P and the new XR920P if possible!
I have the MR920P
@@TheHumbleMarksman Close enough!
What plate are you using for the optic because the one that it comes with apparently doesn't work with zev or shadow systems?I ask because that's what it said on the website and I want the same setup!
I used the one that came with the 509. Seems to work as far as I am concerned
@@TheHumbleMarksman thanks
were you using the 15lb or 18lb spring in the video?
15
Which holo sun sight is on there ?
You dont have the ftp optic on the bul? Did it fail on you?
I have two Buls - one has a max the other a FTP
Should have shown the comp works by putting it through a no shoot port and blowing up the no shoots around it just like all you open players do at matches
I’m in between 2 different guns but would love your opinion.
DR920P vs Rival S.
Same price point.
Use: recreational + home defense.
Between those two I would probably do the 920P given your use
@@TheHumbleMarksman thank you so much for taking the time to answer me. 👍🏻
Will it accept a Timney trigger?
I put a Timny trigger on mine and it lasted about 500 rounds.....then it began to fail.....would not reset. I ended up with an APex......not as good as the Timny....but it's holding up.
I have had nothing but issues with this gun.......won't go into it..... I could have bought 2 reliable Caniks for what I paidfor this gun.
The only Glock style pistol I actually want
if a gun is rated to shoot 9 +p or +p+ defensive loads with no reliability issues is that equivalent to a 9 major?
No. 9 major is dangerously over pressure. +p is 10% of book max over. My load is 35% over max.
@@TheHumbleMarksman this is exactly why i love your channel man, always coming out with helpful information like this, keep the world class firearms content coming
Have you tried the Ram Jet yet from Radian?
Haven’t yet
@@TheHumbleMarksman :c
Do you know of any companies that make a holster for the dr920p with a tlr 9?
Would a G34 holster not work?
@@TheHumbleMarksman I would hope so but I just can’t seem to find anything that fits my setup 🤦🏿♂️
I've been dealing with light primer strikes.
call them and make them fix it
@@TheHumbleMarksman they blamed the ammo (Magtech 115, but it was doing it with other brands too). Loaded all the light strikes into my Hellcat and they fired flawlessly. I do have some NATO otw based on this video. So, I'm going to test additional ammo before sending it in.
Hows this compare recoil wise to a glock 34 gen 5?
It's a little less snappy, but my G34.5 isn't very snappy either. And the 34 will eat whatever you put through it.
What holster fits this?
Glock 34
DR920P sadly does not lock into a G34 Safariland 6360, buddy of mine found that out the hard way
That’s lame
Check out OT Defense. They have options for changing the barrel plug in Safariland holsters (and the nub mod for ALS systems). I had mine setup for my G45, then got a SS MR920 with a threaded barrel. I am able to swap the barrel plug and run either gun, or even a G17.
It fits Ghost holsters for G34
Nice BHE - big haircut energy
🤩
Without ever trying a compensator in my 53 years of dull average existence I just assumed they were a gimmick to suck me in to spending money. I bought a Hellcat RDP and the compensator actually makes a small gun way nicer to shoot. I haven't done any slo-mo or anything and the effect may be totally psychological but if my groups improve at 7-20 yards which they definitely have I really don't care why. I've always been a Glock 17 fan since I got my first one 30 years ago when I graduated from college but it seems really stupid to not just buy the Shadow Systems equivalent next time around. I've never upgraded anything on a Glock because chances are I'd just mess something up but I've considered it and decided not to because doing it right is like a $1000 in addition to the price of the gun. There are significant advantages to the Glock platform most important to me that it is compatible with my Ruger PCC and it's cool to have same mags and ammo when I go to cruising around in the mountains or hike in to fly fish. I'm not a gun snob so if it doesn't have some kind of noticeable practicality and the Shadow seems pretty cool and not outrageously expensive.
I put my DR920P slide on my Mr920 frame. Shoots even more flat!
That's odd, I wonder why
Your comp is lightened.. looks like they already made a change to the way that comp is produced. My comp is shaped a little different to yours.
How is it lightend
thinking of making this my duty and CCW...thoughts?
Very capable to be as light weight as it is
@@TheHumbleMarksman do you feel you can trust SS with your life?
@@TRUTHandANSWERS I carried an MR920 for like 18 months
I'd get that before a 34 .
“Hell yeah” lol
So how much for our dream gun?
1099
It is my understanding is that 9mm major using a 147gr bullet should do just fine in this gun.
That probably would keep pressure lower and still have gas to run the comp.
what life span do you think that gun would have with 9 major?
Not very long?
That was 176PF ammo - I shot nats with an open Glock shooter and it was in its second season and was having all kinds of problems - assuming 10-15k rounds on it?
9 major? not long at all lol.
@@TheHumbleMarksman thats a LOT longer than I anticipated
I was surprised the chamber leade was long enough for long loaded major 9.
👍🏻
It's so cool but I just don't like that its based on glock... trigger for glock can only get so good compared to other platform
Trigger doesn’t matter that much IMO
@TheHumbleMarksman but the my feeling matters to me. I want to have a mini orgasm everytime I do a dry fire drill.
@@TheHumbleMarksman also didn't expect to get a like from you within seconds of commenting. Cudos to you!
Thumbs up for punting an Elf... That is all.
Great review. One thing: in your studio shots when you would move the gun around to show the top it looks for all the world like you are pointing it directly at your head. I’m sure you weren’t but unsettling for those us that love the BDE and want it to stay here in Earth.
It’s in front of my face - muzzle discipline is always used!
Yes but does it grip like “kegel exercises”
Still cringe at that line from Colion.
You made me cringe with the memory
