    I’ve wrestled with this thought also: I was playing MW3 Zombies with my friends on Series S last night and was really chilled out - especially after a long day. If I had a dedicated PC I don’t think I would be there using a mouse and keyboard when I just want to relax and that to me is part of the console experience. As much as I want to build a PC and move there full time I don’t feel like you’re getting that easy going feeling you would get with Console. Maybe I’ll just have my Asus Rog Ally be the minimal PC experience for now (which is ny first gaming PC also lol).

    Steam Deck (and PC in general) is quite a strong choice for the financial responsibility aspect since you don't have to pay for online services and games are typically way cheaper on sales. Steam Winter sale starts soon... Tomorrow actually, I think. Most of the money you end up spending on gaming goes to the games anyway, the hardware isn't that big of a deal in the grand scheme of things.

      Who are you trying to convince? No PC can run RE4 remake 4k60/120fps like series X for $500. And with the current discounted $350, you're an idiot if you suggest someone go buy a PC this holiday if they want current-gen gaming.
      Most gamers only buy a few games every year. That's why the publishers and retailers all fight for Holiday money because they know most gamers don't go around purchasing a dozen or two video games every year, even with holiday discounts. People know it's cheaper to go console.

    How can PC take over when it's always been on top man. Weird question

  • @Omonarc
    @Omonarc Před 8 měsíci +3

    I think it's important to ask yourself what kind of an experience you want to have with gaming on your PC. For a lot of people (myself included) it's consolidation: having a device that you can use for work, personal stuff, and gaming; but that has a drawback: you're going to need to start troubleshooting because when these things overlap, it causes problems. If all you want out of a gaming PC are the games with more fidelity and framerate with little fuss, you might want to wait until Valve releases Steam OS for general installs. Yes, you can get HoloISO or Chimera OS, but those are going to be tedious and may give you a sour taste. Or you could go the Windows route, which has its' own issues with gaming but you get to play some of the games with deep anticheat support like Valorant/LoL.
    For me, PC gaming is about respect. A good PC game is one that respects that you want to control your experience and will do what it can to accommodate your preferences. A good PC is one that will let you use the hardware that you prefer, from core components to accessories. The games that tend to peeve PC gamers are the ones where there are no options for graphics settings, controls, or mod support. There is a steep learning curve though, but once you get past it, it can be deeply rewarding.

    • @user-s8jb3qb6y
      @user-s8jb3qb6y Před 8 měsíci

      Outside of modding certain games, I haven't experienced any "learning curve" in the past 11-12 years of solely PC gaming (ok I have a Switch but that's besides the point) outside of the in-game graphics menu which isn't "steep". And that graphics menu balancing act of frames vs graphics effects is a thing if you have a mid/low-end PC, which fair point, many do. But it's worth mentioning those with high-end setups just pick the highest preset and you're off to the races. But for mid/low-end gamers, once you dial in the graphics in 1, 2 or 3 games, you really get the hang of it. It's not a steep learning curve by any means.
      Now have there been games that have released in a poor state? Yes, and they also get blasted in the Steam reviews nor should you buy them, but even with that subset many are updated. But in the past 11-12 years, aside from 7 or 8 (mostly online games pulling down servers) games, my 900+ library works without issue. Many Unreal Engine (UE) 4/5 games in the past 2 years or so have shader/traversal hitching (consoles also get traversal hitching and resolution drops) and some people are distracted by these while others aren't. High-end hw for sure mitigates it but there's no fixes. It's essentially Unreal not doing the legwork and then developers not picking up Unreal's slack. It's an engine issue though in UE 5.3 some of those issues have been addressed, and UE 5.4 these issues should be minimised. But point being, that issue is not as Digital Foundry repeatedly said, fixable by the user.
      With my high-end rig and Steam Deck (due to its fixed hw spec it's able to download precompiled shaders alongside the game) I'm not sensitive to it, but for those particularly sensitive, your options are consoles (which also have traversal stutter and DRS resolution drops, just not shader ones); editing text files outside of the game isn't even on an option. You gotta forgive me, but I find it hilarious when people equate PC gaming to needing to edit text files in say, every 1 in 5 or 10 games. If you're doing it right, you're trying to optimize a pre-2021 game for a mid/low-end rig, which is one way of approaching it, just as not approaching broken games is. As mentioned, I've never edited files outside of modding. But recently even with modding I usually take shortcuts such as Steam Workshop (making downloading mods as easy as downloading games), or if the game doesn't integrate Workshop, going with a mod installer like Vortex instead.

    • @TheActs2021
      @TheActs2021 Před 8 měsíci

      yeah, it's that "learning curve, patience, multiple things could go wrong, interfaces, more expensive, etc" that I'm not willing to put up with on PC gaming... just not for me. Just like when I was a kid turning on that original Atari or NES... then I'm in the game in 5 seconds... that's what I want.

      @Omonarc Před 8 měsíci +1

      @@TheActs2021 I get your point, but you're also coming at this as someone who is fairly well versed in using a PC to begin with. If someone is used to using a Mac and game consoles, jumping to Windows or Linux is a huge change.
      While I agree that if you have mid-high end hardware, it's pretty much click to go, when you have a problem, it's up to you to figure it out. There's no support outside of Reddit and forums, which can really be a turnoff for a lot of people.

My family prefers consoles and 4. Split screen Halo! MCC doesn’t have split screen on pc. Also 5, I play some older back compat games that aren’t on PC at all. Overall I agree though, unless things change the series X and One X in our house will be the last Xbox’s I buy for my own use. I also felt bad for the switch as it got no love. I have building and gaming on PC's since the early 2000's, the PC just does everything a Xbox does and more. If you have a great second hand market and know some people, building a PC is really cheap, I have maybe $400-$500 into mine and can keep up with newer AAA games, there's noting on game pass I can't play, I also have a Steam library and Epic to choose from. It's also GPU away from exceeding Series X/PS5.

    I do love the 4k 60 fps experience from Xbox SX and PS5. I use a Mac for work and personal use so I'm not in the PC world. However, if the next version of the Steam Deck can match the performance of the Series X then I would consider just going with the Steam Deck due to the portability and dock-ability. I don't think I would have the patience or want to spend the time and money building a great PC anytime soon. I do have high hopes for the next version of the Steam Deck in terms of performance and most likely an OLED screen so I think I will pull the trigger eventually.

    When it comes to value, consoles will ALWAYS obliterate PC gaming on hardware cost. As an adult with gaming as my primary hobby, however, I have more disposable income and can afford to pay more to get a "premium experience". Still, the ease factor of console gaming will always appeal to me no matter how much time/money I have. At 8 PM when my 1 year old baby is asleep, my wife is watching Bravo in bed, and all the dishes are done, it's much more relaxing to plop down on my couch and fire up a console than it is to sit upright at my desk, update my graphics driver for 15 minutes, update the game launcher, update the game, etc.
    When I absolutely demand ultra graphics at 165Hz of course my PC is my only choice - but for comfy gaming after a long day? Console is still king.

      Some valid points. It's worth checking out PC gaming in a year or so. SteamOS has really shaken up PC gaming for those that picked up the Steam Deck, but for more widespread appeal, that'll happen in the coming year or two when it launches for other handhelds and more importantly desktop/laptop PCs. Console-style gaming with a controller on your couch, that can be continued on desktop, laptop or handheld and back again.
      I mean it's possible between Steam Big Picture Mode and Steam Deck now, but Big Picture Mode lives on the Steam app on Windows and you might get the odd Windows pop-up once in a while requiring more than a controller. While that's improved over the years, SteamOS is now the last piece of the puzzle to really make controller-based streamlined gaming the norm.

    The one part of PC gaming that I haven't notice you mention on your videos is the amazing MOD community that surrounds all of the PC gaming realm... You get so much more value over time with PC games. For instance, look at the value that has come out of the Half Life game alone... PC gaming community is to thank for that. You get one game you play it and then wait for the community to create the game they wanted.. or just take it further than originally intended... it's not even close. 100% agree - since microsoft has been pushing Gamepass as their go forward strategy, the xbox console slowly grows ever more an entertainment box rather than a gaming box. So long as you are doubled up in the console and pc world - an xbox console is not needed. Not to say it can't be useful! The argument can still be made for a dedicated couch gaming alternative to your desk pc. If you game primarily through gamepass, you can realistically dedicate the majority of your gaming to the pc and have the xbox for more casual sessions or family nights, streaming apps, etc.

    Recently went back to Monster Hunter Rise on Switch. Played docked and it was so jarring at an unstable 30 FPS that I had to move to handheld. I agree with you, 30 FPS on a big TV just doesn’t cut it anymore. I have been planning a move to PC gaming as a focus as well after becoming a dad. Nice to see both of us see the light at the same time. Now I just gotta save up for a Steam Deck OLED!

    I can agree that a PC Xbox combo is redundant. I get almost all of what's on Xbox plus PC games. Gamepass and Steam (with killer sales) and the Deck is a better way to go all around. If you are inclined to that. Some prefer just having a console for ease of use and convenience.

  • @cunawarit
    @cunawarit Před 8 měsíci

    I feel the same, my two main modern gaming devices right now are a Series S and a Steam Deck and whilst the Series S is a better performer you lose so much when it comes to flexibility.
    The only reason I use the Series S is for Fortnite! Everything else I play on Steam Deck. I can run Fortnite on the Steam Deck by booting into Windows but it's a faff, I don't like using Windows on the Steam Deck and the Series S runs Fortnite at 120FPS and the Steam Deck doesn't.
    If I had to choose one, there's no contest! Steam Deck is WAY better value.
    I don't think you are being heavy handed with it comes to Xbox, I think Game Pass and Xbox cloud gaming are here to stay. But perhaps the days of Xbox hardware are limited, I just don't see the need for the box, I really don't know what Microsoft consoles being that you can't get elsewhere.
    PS: You are currently experiencing SteamDeck/SteamOS PC gaming, which is easier than Windows PC gaming :) Steam Deck is so pervasive that it is the only PC that devs specifically target and create specific stock settings for it. It's a blissful way to experience PC gaming.

    The same goes for PlayStation. I have every Sony exclusive on my Steam deck and if I want to play it at a higher frame rate and a bigger screen and I'll just play it on a PC that's more powerful on my 4K monitor. That's where I have my Xbox connected to my series X so I could play at 4k 120. This is probably the last generation of a dedicated disc drive consoles. Maybe we'll have one more generation of dedicated consoles, but with Xbox Game Pass, there's really no need to worry about that. And with activation and blizzard being on Microsoft's team, that's going to change if you see the Sony leaks, they're more worried about subscription cells and they are console sales

      Now more than ever with everybody on the go. The only reason consoles are a thing is because to being able to play it on the screen but I connect my legion go to my LG OLED and it looks great. I have no complaints and it runs nice and smooth and I don't even have to use a dock. I can use a dock but I don't have to. That is the future so consoles. They really need to push hard because they're still a lot of games that I can play on PC on my legion go that are old school that are backwards compatible that you can't play on consoles anymore. Hell there's even games that were made at 30 frames per second on consoles but never got the bump up to 60. But on PC that's not a problem. And with the upscaling being so good they're really is no need to have any native 4k or anything like that. It's about to get real real serious and either Sony and Microsoft needs to step up. I need to get on board with the handheld market. Make something powerful enough that you could plug into your TV. Basically to kind of like a switch but just way more powerful to compete with the legion goal. The asus rog ally the steam deck because they're about to start losing a lot because I don't need my PS5 anymore. Spider-Man 2 is eventually going to come to PC by next year. I'm already playing Miles Morales on it. Running great than the original Spider-Man is great too
