    Have you seen a #4kReview of #GhostbustersFrozenEmpire or other digitally shot movies? If so, they may be steering you wrong! So, pop that tape in, I got you, let's go do this!

    Yup fun fact avid came along in the 80’s to help with editing it got better as it went along but those great movies we love from 80’s yup 2k resolution put back to film. That’s what’s great about today’s reissues a lot can get actual negative and get fresh scan.

    Discussions of transfers in youtube reviews are generally bad. They vary from, "best it's ever looked," to just incorrect information altogether. I feel like there's a huge hole on CZcams for people doing informed transfer and color grading reviews. I'd be interested to see more videos like this from you or really anyone. What we have now is just a bunch of people talking out of their rears and shills with affiliate links that just sell hype.

      thank you! not to call anyone out or set myself above anyone on youtube, but I kinda keep noticing some things that are pretty consistently similiar and sometimes similarly incorrect or mistaken when it comes to 4k reviews...so I try to set my "fan hat" aside and put on my "filmmaker" hat and kind of talk about those things in conversational terms where they dont get overly techincal...I by no means know it all, but I have worked in the business for a good long while -so if I can help pass on what I know, I will!

    I'd like to see a discussion on Once Upon a Time in The West. It looks unusual. Not like flim and not like video. People seem to have a dark halo around tham that to me looks like heavy ambient occlusion found in video games. It's very noticeable in the scenes where Jason Robards rescues Charles Bronson on the train. Every time he passes a window there is a dark shadow flowing him. I never noticed it on the bluray. At times the movie looks great. At other times it looks like it has been processed somehow. I was expecting to see some grain, but there's hardly any, but to be honest, even the dvd looked really sharp and clean. Now, this 4k, it doesn't look natural at times, and that is distracting. What's wrong with it?

    • @AVAPopCulture
      @AVAPopCulture  Před 2 dny +1

      hmmmm that is interesting! Id have to see it to make a guess on what is happening there!

  • @FriedTux
    @FriedTux Před dnem

    I think that where a lot of people get confused is that a lot of films are shot on 35mm film, without special effects, and then when special effects are added they are added at 2k. So when the "4k UHD" disk is put out, it is basically an upscaled with interpolation, IE fakey-fake 4k. And there just isn't a good way to go back without redoing all of the digital effect shots. Too expensive. So they are just stuck at being 2k forever.
    The 90's to the 2010's are just screwed because of the way shot. And why older films can smoke films from the 90's to mid 2010's on resolution. They had practical effects. The film is the film. And anything shot on 70mm can absolutely dominate in clarity and resolution with a theoretical resolution of 16 to 20k.
    2001: A Space Odessy is an excellent example of this. Shot in 1968 and looks better (resolution wise) better than a lot of films shot today.

    • @AVAPopCulture
      @AVAPopCulture  Před dnem

      And there are very few filmmakers shooting with film anymore...they are mostly using 4k, 5k and even 8k digital cameras...so there is no actual downscaling process to degrade the final master...so it is all tack sharp digital...
      The older stuff with 2k fx put on film in the intermediate will always have those fx stuck at 2k so when the film is restored to 4k, they stick out worse...look at the space ship in the beginning of Event Horizon- perfect example...

    I think I get what your saying. Maybe you can answer this. I prefer the picture on my fixed panel display over my local cinemas. The local cinemas seem to have a fuzzier picture. Is it just me or are my eyes actually picking up a better quality image at home?

    • @AVAPopCulture
      @AVAPopCulture  Před 2 dny +2

      most likely that "fuzziness" is because of the light spread from the projector across a wide space and then the screen itself has "texture" which can add to that softness whereas at home, your screen is likely equally bright across the whole panel and also isnt being projected against a textured surface...
