As a VR user it is so important for a sim to be well optimised for VR. So much so that certain sims are no go products (looking at you ACC). In this respect, the clear winner is AMS2. From a VR perspective, the best balance between variety, physics and VR optimisation remains AC

I think it was worth mentioning regarding Raceroom that part of the content is free - including recently updated, excellent prototypes or great Aquila CR1 cup car, as well as some great tracks like Sepang and Portimao - and you can try out all the cars in the roster before buying them, as well as check the entire game's functionalities. I always thought those aspects of their purchase model were underappreciated. Usually you need to buy a sim or a DLC blindly, based on other people's impressions. iRacing is the biggest offender in that regard, with its prices and wildly varying level of quality.

Raceroom and ACC for me. Although I also have AMS2, I don’t really spend much time on that. The Prototype cars are awesome, but that’s about it. I picked up Raceroom in the summer sale for under 40 quid for all the content using vrp. Okay, so the graphics aren’t the best, but it’s still amazing what they’re doing with direct x 9 and the force feedback and physics are really good. I had ACC on the console and it was terrible, but since switching to PC it’s brilliant. Looking forward to what happens in the next couple of years with things like Rennsport and AC2. Interesting to see what they add to sim racing too.

I have never been able to come to terms with iRacing. The physics feel very strange to me, though the latest tire model update was a huge improvement. The FFB is just at this point is just laziness from the dev team as well.

  • @EhPlusSimRacing
    @EhPlusSimRacing Před 2 lety +1

    Excellent summary.
There's also the issue of platform and title availability. For those of us on PC we don't have this limitation, but those on PS or Xbox will be limited to only a few sim titles like AC (no mod support), ACC, or PC2. And those of us on PC but have older CPU/GPU there are plenty of options, but they may not be visually polished, like RF(1), AMS(1), GTR2, or RRE.
Also, if someone wants to host online races they will have to consider how easy/difficult it will be to setup an online race or series with their chosen sim. AMS2 has that option integrated in the sim, whereas AC (don't know about ACC) and RaceRoom have an official app for launching a server. I hear that launching a private server in RF2 is a nightmare.

It came out in 2004 so the graphics are definitely dated but the driving experience isn't all that bad at all, even on keyboard and mouse. Good sides of Raceroom : great phyics and FFB, alot of free content, the ability to tryout the car for a unlimited time before buying it, great and positive vibe in online racing, a nice ranked system, great cars sounds, you dont need a powerful pc to run it.
bad sides: graphics are outdated due to the old engine they use, no day and night cyclus, missing different types of weather, and still missing certain cars/ car brands, pricing is a 50/50 because you as buyer decide how exspensive you make it.
Raceroom has alot to offer can be exspensive dont have to be, doesnt have every type's of weather or the best graphics but this game is absolutely outstanding and also the exact reason why i dont play ACC but spend all my time on Raceroom especially with my CSL DD that combined with the great FFB does a outstanding job telling me what the cars does or if i hit kerbs to harsch etc.

Well done, Ben. Maybe a word on such comparisons in general. What I miss most of the time when people discuss about ACC in comparison is, that it is a very specialized sim for one racing series in the GT3, GT4, some Cup cars classes. IF you are more into open wheelers, vintage cars, and the maaany other interesting and challenging racing series of the past and present, ACC is simply no option.
Not everyone likes GT racing and even if you are looking for GTE and Le mans Prototypes , you need to skip ACC already.
So it covers a certain niche and Kunos can put all their combined efforts on basically a handful of cars. When looking at the grids of todays ACC online racing, you can even break that further down to mainly GT3 ( I mean who drives GT4 seriously these days except for quite a few people in RL racing ) and in GT3 on less then a handful of cars. Looking at you MacL, BMW, Fezza, Astons and Audi. Sometimes a Porsche makes it, but too difficult to ride for many.
Don't get me wrong. I own practically all of those sims and some others , except iRacing. I really love ACC, but only for 2-3 cars and the tracks. I have AC , and out of the 20+ mods I have, only less then a handful are really good. But still not for offline racing as the AI is a very weak point in this game. I like AMS1 for 1 or two series and it's rF1 feeling, but only for very few cars. Likewise AMS2 which gained a lot of ground over the past year, but still : AI and custom offline racing ? Forget about it.
R3E shines if I want a full grid of a VLN like Nordschleife 24h event, except no weather other then dry. It's physics and FFB have been much improved and for some series, I can resemble the feel I ha in my rally car when racing on tarmac or when roiding my Supra and Corvette. But, the stable weather is actually a no go for racing in the notoriously and challenging bad weather region of the NordS.
That leaves me with rF2. While I adore it's physics ( flawed or not ) and even more it's super crisp and dry FFB, I hate practically all the rest...most user unfriendly racing game I have. I MISS an updated GTR2 and it's tons of good mods though.
So at the end of the day, I use all those sims but only for very selected racing series as none of them does all things best. Even ACC has quite a few cars I don't like and it's AI is , well say less then what one would expect from such a sim. So bottom line, no ranking from me as each satisfiy other needs and requirements.

I got into sim racing about a month ago, and after 1 day of playing ACC, my impression is that this is almost certainly going to become my favorite "non rally" racing sim. Ive also only played AMS2 for 1 day, and it has a much better variety of cars and tracks - but to me the realism of ACC just felt like "next level" compared to AC and AMS2 👍 If i had to choose just 1 "non rally" racing game, it would probably be AC due to the selection of cars and tracks, but i might perhaps change my mind when Nordschleife (and hopefully several more long tracks) comes to ACC. AMS2 also have a decent selection of cars - and a good selection of tracks - and the graphics are definitely better than "vanilla" AC, but i have not figured out how to use my T248 steering wheel for navigating menus, and i REALLY dont like having to reach for the mouse all the time 😐

I thought it was obvious ... from road experience (up and down dirt roads with muddy ruts. oh, and patches of frozen/icy dirt here and there!) I always went over-steer, trusting instincts to compensate in the moment. But? having heard some aces talk about the other option ... hmmmm.
Some notable names figure under-steer is more consistent, more predictable, more controllable ... can be dealt with, apex to apex. Dang, *_that really does make sense!_* 🙂

@@Ben_LaBroca I can recommend him to try Assetto Corsa w\Mods, Assetto Corsa Competizionne(Unreal Engine 4), Race Room (free to play with all in 1 game), and BeamNG (CPU is used heavily for simulating, and recent graphics updates will get GPU to work) with mods.
Basically every race game is modding capable - so it may test his GPU ability to render while moving really fast.
Racing games should be focused on single player and multiplayer should not be different from single player - all should be equal. Tired of games that has only online - this is not the way.

I’ve got all the sims mentioned and iracing is the only one that can easily run huge online team events. They are spectacular often with 55 cars a split for a 24 hour race and 30-60 splits, all ranked by ability. That you can also do great 15 min sprint races means it has virtually every kind of racing you want. Also run the VLN series to race 4 and 6 hours at Nordshliefe, Le Mans, Bathurst 12, Daytona 24, Spa 24…just the best racing ever. Get in a team, get in and it’ll change your view. Our team won our split in the Le Mans 24 in LMP1- best racing experience ever with a multi national team. #parabellumracing

Interesting that you mention AMS2 as an example of "best graphics", because I think that especially in sunny daytime conditions it looks incredibly sterile and artificial, moreso on tracks where the environment mostly consists of grass and trees.
Just did some laps with the Porsche RSR 1974 on Brands Hatch at 16.00 under the light clouds setting and found the experience to be pretty miserable, the car squirming around even after the tyres had warmed up, felt like the tarmac was covered with a layer of black ice.
I then switched to Assetto Corsa, choosing the same track, time and weather and using the AC Legends Porsche 911 RSR 1973 and it was like a breath of fresh air.
Visuals, sound, handling, FFB - everything felt miles better and in the replay the car now actually resembled a 1970s Porsche rather than a plastic toy model.
The livery (#13) looked sumptious, while those of the AMS 2 Porsche must be one of the ugliest in all of sim racing.
Recently I've also been paying a bit more attention to Raceroom and while I agree that sim can be an absolute eyesore when it comes to certain tracks in the noon time slot, it has a quality to it that just feels right most of the time and watching a replay of a Group 5 car on BH at the afternoon setting looks and sounds so genuine that you can almost smell the petrol fumes.
After a rough start ACC has also grown on me; not only is it the sim that looks closest to the real thing despite the TAA induced ghosting and blur, the cars sound great and there's a subtlety to the handling and FFB that seems very natural and believable.
