  • The key to personal growth is stepping out of our comfort zone. But we can overdo it-challenging ourselves to the point where we are overwhelmed and no learning can occur. In this clip from The Heart of The Matter Online Course, Pema Chödrön offers us a tool for practicing self-compassion as we push ourselves into unfamiliar territory.

Love the fact she is using modern day psychology for her teachings...

Buddha's Dhammapada is the core teaching without living an actual Buddhist lifestyle. - Verse 1. "All that we are is the result of what we have thought: It is founded on our thoughts, it is made up of our thoughts. If a man speaks or acts with an evil thought, pain follows him, as the wheel follows the foot of the ox that draws the carriage."
I am the ox that draws the carriage. That represents me moving along in my life. The evil thought is analogous. We need to know it plays out in the psyche and "evil" is what happened. I remember with emotional pain, and it cycles behind me in life and continues to hurt me. When we get done with it we realize it is the memory and the emotional charge we give it as well as the level of emotion we give it, that actually creates it within us. Then that cycling wheel? That's karma. What we hold continues to return. We must change the emotional charge around the memory to be free of it. We must face this to do it. It is psychology at heart. "All that we are is the result of what we have thought." Peace

I’m in this strange comfort zone right now. Life won’t let me live and it won’t let me die either. I can disappear right now and it won’t really matter.

So beautiful, so comforting, wise, simple yet profound. I hope all who are watching here experience peace and wholeness and attain self-acceptance. I hope you do not need to experience the trauma zone too frequently. Love to all.

I really like the video, but I felt like maybe it just got cut off before it could talk about what happens when you step into excessive risk zone and how that impacts the amount of time you have to spend in the comfort zone afterward or other consequences there’s anyone else have a video that they recommend the address of these things?

But most raindrops, when they get near the ocean, they stop
and they say: ‘Oh no!’, and they try to go back to the cloud.
    This is what creates hailstorms.
    And they enter hail-realms
of inability to commit to unite with the ocean.
And they would rather tell stories about how close they got to that ocean
but remain in some cloud of unknowing that confuses itself with the Real.
But a time comes when the Ocean of Consciousness can no longer be resisted,
because the gravity of the hailstone has accumulated too much suffering,
too much frozenness in its past traumas, too much fear, too much illusory entity-hood,
too much history, too much sorrow, too much karma to bear.
But no matter how large the hailstone or how small,
    or how liquefied the drop,
    all dissolve the same,
    all are one,
    there is no difference.
No matter what happened in that biographical journey of the illusory ego,
all are the same, one, infinite ocean of presence, of intelligence, of bliss.
And the ocean is an infinite ocean of laughter, of joy, at the realization of the illusion.
And there is no mind left that would wish for anything other than this eternal liberation.
And because all these raindrops and hailstones have emerged
from the same ocean in the first place
    they carry that ocean within,
they have never been anything BUT that ocean.
We are always that which we are seeking,
    or we are fleeing from,
or we are thinking about committing to.
But all of those illusory attitudes toward the Real,
all take place ignorantly WITHIN the Real
because there is nothing BUT the Real.
The ocean may extend itself as fog, as clouds, as storms,
    as every possible permutation of form and energy and activity;
it may even take the apparent form of solid ground.
But all of it ultimately is that same oceanic awareness,
that same infinite, formless, intelligent, blissful Self,
regardless of whatever conditions arise within its plane of awareness.
All that arises, all that disappears, constitute the same light, the same mind-nature,
    the same infinite intelligence.
And there is no change, there is no multiplicity,
there are no persons, bodies, events, only the immutable Presence
that contains all, but is untouched, unaffected, undisturbed.
And from that perspective of the ocean
we recognize that even the traumatic experiences are gifts.
They are even the greatest gifts,
for they show us our own power of self-overcoming,
our power of awakening, illumination, self-liberation,
the ecstasy of that eternal instant
when you realize that YOU are THAT.
And this internal instant is always now...

Had to laugh as I just completed a 10 day vipassana and was like "Right, time to cancel my netflix" which I knew from the start was just an escape (as much as I freakin' love Avatar the last airbender and all its' spiritual teachings!) ....and FRIENDS... hahaha

No offense, honestly, but getting out of your comfort zone is something we all know by 7th grade... but a respected elder puts on a costume and everyone acts like it's a profundity that humanity has never encountered before... this entire lecture is a comfort zone for the people reacting that way to something they've known since adolescence... irony.

Not everyone is in your place, your experience, your mind, your skin, some of us.have been so.abused as that 7 year old that we don't understand risk or discomfort as growth, but as abuse. I'd recommend recommend you skip to compassion teachings mighty one. Also you were disrespectful and saying you dont mean to be means you know you are being disrespectful but dont quite have the courage to own it, and wish for us to dispense the forgiveness. Wow.
