    Awesome tutorial, I may have gone to school to learn how to use pro tools, but having been out for 2 years now, there are things I have forgotten simply because I don't use them on a regular basis. ie. how to have the transport keys available in the top bar as opposed to the transport window.
    Great refresher course!

    If you don't have a sustain pedal, you can double-click on a MIDI clip to open it in the MIDI editor. Then, at the bottom of the MIDI editor, you can draw in MIDI automation. One such MIDI automation is Sustain Pedal.

  • @MusicTechHelpGuy
    @MusicTechHelpGuy  Před 11 lety +1

    That's pretty simple to do. You could create a Aux Input track, make the Input of the track the same input that your mic is plugged into, and then route the Aux track to an Audio track for recording. Then just put the effects on the Aux track. You'd only hear the effects when you are speaking/singing into the mic, but when you play it back, it's dry.

    Yeah, I use Logic, PT, and Ableton Live. I like them all for different reasons. I find that editing and MIDI composing in Logic is easier and more powerful; not to mention the stock set of FX plug-ins and softsynths are better. ProTools' mix automation is top-notch, and also the different waveform views make editing easy; not to mention the XForm Elastic mode is pretty much better than anything out there. Generally my students do find that PT is harder to use as beginners.

    Xpand has several sets of drum samples, as does Boom. Pro Tools does not suppor the VST format, so you'd have to install a VST wrapper to run them. Although, I've never tried to use a VST wrapper.

    If you're plugging a mic into the 1/4" jack and you're not getting any signal, it's probably because the 1/4" is a hi-level input. Try using an XLR cable with the mic, and use a mic input. If you followed the video above, it's probably not a problem with the software.

  • @MusicTechHelpGuy
    @MusicTechHelpGuy  Před 11 lety

    Although @ThatDJRandizzle is right about Command-F for creating fades -- this only applies to audio tracks. Instrument tracks are MIDI data and cannot be so easily faded. To fade MIDI you'll have to use volume automation to manually create the fade. So, no, there really isn't a quick, easy way.

  • @MusicTechHelpGuy

    If you are using an audio interface, just plug the headphones into the headphone jack in the audio interface, and turn the volume knob up on it.

  • @MusicTechHelpGuy
    @MusicTechHelpGuy  Před 11 lety

    Unlike Logic Pro, which allows you to have a different output as well as input, Pro Tools does not do this so easily. If you're using a PC, YES, your output and input have to be the same, so your output would also be your interface, and you'll have to plug your headphones or monitors into the interface, rather than your computer. If you are on a Mac, you can actually use the Aggregate I/O to choose two different options; however, I have not used it before.

    It's true that a 32-bit application will only access 4 GB of RAM, but what about your plug-ins, what about the OS, what about other simultaneous operations happening while running PT? Having more RAM means that PT can access the full amount of RAM it can access, letting your computer access additional RAM, therefore making PT run smoother.

    This was helpful, but I was hoping to learn how to use the sounds of my kurzweil, not the plug in mini-grand in pro-tools on my instrument tracks. I've been looking for this, but have only found the plug ins used so far.... (I'm not very technically oriented) Can you use an instrument track and somehow combine it with an outboard instrument, or do you have to record it as an audio track?

    • @MusicTechHelpGuy
      @MusicTechHelpGuy  Před 7 lety

      You can just plug-in the Kurzweil will an audio interface and record the audio, but if you're looking to record MIDI in Pro Tools and trigger the keyboard externally, you can do that too. It just takes a bit more work. You can create a MIDI track in PT, send it out to an external keyboard, and then monitor the audio on an Aux Track, or record it on an audio track. I have a video on how to do this in Logic, but not in Pro Tools. It's a similar process, but not exactly the same.

  • @MusicTechHelpGuy
    @MusicTechHelpGuy  Před 11 lety

    (1) check your Setup > Playback Engine to make sure that your Mbox is the selected device. (2) Reset your I/O like I did in the video. The paths might be off. (3) Is it an older mbox, like an older Mbox mini? Some of the older Mbox minis don't have preamps on-board, which means they won't pick up very loud, even if phantom power is on.

    I have a problem. I have a plain vocal (without any effects) which I want to have a Reverb on. Now when I create the Aux track (Name it Reverb) and then do a send to Reverb and listen to it, it sounds like a decent reverb BUT there is an ADDED Flanger type of extra effect. IDK where is it coming from. If I listen to the vocal track, it sounds natural, But if I send it through to the SEND to the Reverb Aux OR send it through Output to the Reverb Aux, it adds Reverb PLUS that Flanger type effect. I am Using Protools 10HD and my effect is True Verb (stereo, Waves) IDK what I am doing wrong any of you guys can advise? help will be appreciated.
