What Being a Firefighter Taught Me About the Spiritual Life

  • During his time as a firefighter, Bobby learned some things that have helped him, and can help us in the spiritual life:
    1. Don’t ever turn your back to a fire. Satan is waiting for us to expose any vulnerability.
    2. Pay attention to detail. Not paying attention to venial sins could add up to big problems.
    3. Respect is earned, not given. If you’re a leader, carry the load of others.
    4. Do the work that needs to be done. Assume you won’t be recognized for what you do. Humility is the beginning of all virtue.
    5. No man is an island. A team of firefighters puts out fires. A community of believers strengthens us in our times of weakness.
Pray for us, St. Florian, patron of firefighters.

As a firefighter/paramedic, the fire department is a great place to practice virtues until you finally get it right. Humility, patience, charity etc are much needed in the department and when you conquer those virtues you will link your spiritual life with those firefighter attributes all for God’s name and His will.

EXCELLENT! Great analogy between a job (firefighter) and a spiritual life. With reflection I can apply this to my life. I spent years in the Navy. I can relate.
BTW - my grandfather was a firefighter in the horse drawn carriage days. Firefighters and police are often our unsung heroes.

Thank you for sharing your inspirations, Bobby. My Irish grandfather was also a NYC firefighter... a brave man. I'm sure your grandfather was too. And thank you for your service, too. God bless you.

Not that I didn’t get anything else out of this, because I did, but I just have to comment on how awesome it is that you have your grandfather’s fire helmet. It’s so cool.

I needed this. Im doing my own version of lent, and was doing really well and kept praying and talking to God about how I was doing so well, and... I fell. I completely went way off course these last 2 days. I got cocky and I got a big wake up call I was human and I needed God. God had to guide me and I have to keep humble on this journey. It's odd that I see this video and that's the first thing you talk about.

    Absolutely loved this.
I must say though, there is such a thing as letting SOME dishes soak 😅 but I do agree that some people do use that as an excuse to be lazy.
    Thank you for this Bobby.

#1 and #2 are big ones for me, especially the first one. I'm deal with astraphobia, and due to the fact that raining season has come to my hometown and I'm going back to school tomorrow, makes it specially hard to the live Today. But, that makes it profitable, I can earn merit and strength from this.
Now that I'm going tomorrow, I know how to love the place I am.
