Olga Onuch - Zelensky is Forced to make Decisions that are Existential to the Survival of Ukraine.

  • Prof. Olga Onuch has written what has been described as the definitive portrait of Volodymyr Zelensky, an extraordinary book called “The Zelensky Effect”. In this book, she explains the paradox of Zelensky as a leader and but also entertainer, businessman and risk-taker. She explores Ukraine’s national history to show how its now-iconic president reflects the hopes and frustrations of the country’s first ‘independence generation’. Interweaving social and political background with compelling episodes from Zelensky’s life and career, this is the story of Ukraine told through the journey of one man who has come to symbolise his country, and perhaps uniquely in the world is forced to make decisions that are existential to the survival of his country.
    ----------
Prof. Olga Onuch is Professor (Chair) in Comparative and Ukrainian Politics at the University of Manchester (making her the first-ever holder of a Full Professorship in ‘Ukrainian Politics’ in the English-speaking world). Olga joined UoM in 2014, after holding research posts at the University of Toronto, the University of Oxford, and Harvard University.

That´s a "must-listen-to" SC episode! Fantastic talk i enjoyed greatly. Prof. Onuch has opened up new perspectives on Zelenskyy and Ukraine´s more recent democratic development for me. It`s very pleasant to listen to Olga Onuch's structured answers. (and the interviewer wasn't bad either ... ;) Hope many ppl share the episode on soc media, it´s really worth it. Thx SC

As one who is familiar with the history of Ukraine and it’s surroundings and followed current events as they unfolded after the “collapse “ of the soviet state, I was pretty p*ssed off that Ze won the majority. The contrast between a professional “clown” becoming a serious statesman in Ukraine and professional statesmen becoming clowns in the west is curious indeed . Even the malignant midget of moscow can be seen as a clown if the clown in mind is Pennywise…. Thanks again for yet another excellent interview. No one else on earth deserves the title “Mr Curtain “ as much as you .

and telling them what to do a lot less.
We are losing credibility by the minute.

Fascinating on the organic growth of democracy 2014+ as more people came to believe it was POSSIBLE . Also the decentralisation under Poroshenko, and his army reforms which I knew nothing about ! Like the widespread corruption, V difficult to change from previous rigid hierarchical Soviet models to more equal ones , in such a short time .

Whe growing up in Lviv in late 60's and early 70's, I had oranges twice a year and that was good a good year. We looked forward to holidays because again around Christmas and Easter we had ham. When I walked to school in the winter and carried my book bag I didn't have gloves. Often for dinner I had mash potatoes and glass of butter milk. But for most part I was happy because I had no more or no less than my friends.

A deeply insecure ppl needed a new brand, a new symbol, other than hammer and sickle, which was also a PR fantasy of sorts, made for the peasants, bcuz the peasants in RU never even got close to becoming truly educated.

Re: make up - sure, especially when compared to the orange spray tan and massive amounts of foundation Trump sports on the regular. I’d like to just point a slight issue out though - with the understanding that the original comment was made with positive intentions in mind. Yet there’s a bit of a blind spot there. It just sort of comes off as a backhanded compliment that’s more a judgement of women who do wear make up. As such, it speaks of a person who believes they are in the position to make this sort of a remark - which then points to a lack of understanding of women’s lived experience in our world set up as it is. In a way it is on the flip side of asking women to “smile more” - because otherwise they are not as pleasant to look at. Again, I understand the comment was not meant to be negative - it just seems a bit uninformed, hoping to be empowering by voicing a certain male perspective. While at the same time delivering a message of disapproval. And it goes quite deep: it implies that women who do make the personal choice of wearing make up have low confidence. As well-meaning as it may be, I’m just not a 100% sure this is an appropriate comment, especially when the general discussion is of such important and grave matters.

I am an Aussie that lives in Ukraine. Zelenskyy definitely improved Ukraine. The decentralisation of the budget really had an affect . The local government has more budget control and is accountable. The local village gossip mill can quickly spread rumours of corruption so it’s unlikely to be corrupted. I see the roads improved, paths improved . We had. New bridge installed . We haven’t got a bus stop yet but after the war we will try. For now the local budget pays for local mobilised soldier equipment etc

Many thanks to British people for the support. In Ukraine we have a lot of opinions on Zelenskiy and criticize him for appointing wrong people to govement positions but he has been doing a good job in foreign policy. A lot of people in Ukraine blame the president for his statements just before the full scale war began. He said that nothing was worried about and we would have barbecue in peaceful country on the holidays. My opinion is that Ukrainians had enough information in media back then to make a conclusion and decided not to believe in the war possibility. The other claim is that he started a big roads construction project instead of building fortifications against the enemy. The current claim of Ukrainians to the president is that the reforms are slow and and the justice system serves the interests of elites. But nevertheless it became a better life in Ukraine year after year up to 2022. The journalist investigators, signed petitions to the president or the parliament and even a social media resonance on different matters have been effecting the policy decisions in Ukraine. And russian people's slaves mentality at mass is not able to understand how they can make an impact on political decisions in russia. In Russia they film videos to the "fair" tzcar asking to punish local authorities in order to solve a problem without understanding that putin is the cause of their problems. I wish all russians war supporters to experience the war on their shoulders.

The world is just sleepwalking towards disaster with this mess in Ukraine. Zelenskyy was elected as a peacemaker to reach an accommodation to the civil war that had been going on for years. There was a negotiated settlement on the table in early 2022 and it should have been encouraged and would’ve been best for everyone. Instead hundreds of thousands are dead, the country is in ruins, and we’re risking nuclear war and it’s been a terrible mistake.
