My First Cush Core Install experience; it can't actually be that hard right? WRONG!!

  • Cush core is a foam insert that eliminates nearly all pinch flats, acts as a bead lock, improves traction and ride quality. Sounds likes a win win, why wouldn't your run in it? IT'S REALLY HARD TO INSTALL (and expensive). In this video you will get to watch Phil struggle to install cush core. I should add, I did watch the installation guide multiple times, but even after doing that, my first experience with installing the cush core insert was very frustrating. However, knowing what I know now, the next experience should be much easier.

      The key to cushcore installation is BURY THE BEAD ALL OF THE WAY AROUND. Deeply into the rims channel. It’s is that simple. Patiently bury that tires bead using the tire logo as a depth gauge. It’s really that simple. Use soapy water on sticky compounds. Any decent tech or a couch monkey that listens can mount these inserts 5-10 min. per wheel. It’s a tire change…🙏🔑✌️

    A tip I got from an Arron gwin video installing a similar system suggested using zip ties to help get the tyre on- so when you get to the point your fingers can't do it, zip tie and it won't pop off as you work on the final bit.
    I see you emulated this with a clamp but I think zip tie is easier :)
    Great work Phil- still loving the videos!' :)

      @BryantKHill Před 7 lety +2

      I tried the zip tie technique during my install, but didn't work as well as I hoped. The bead still kept removing itself past the zip tie. For me.....you have to use extremely soapy water and dig the bead that is on the opposite end as deep as you can into the rim to give you extra room to fully install the tire/tyre. Funny with my hoops the Cush Core went around the wheel very easy. I didn't need to grunt or use a hammer at all. I hope it wasn't pre stretched.....

    • @Windluva
      @Windluva Před 7 lety +2

      Try a couple of clamps directly on tire sidewalls. Can keep the bead towards the center of rim, giving you more slack.

    This vid is awesome. It's pretty much a documentary of my fight too. I spent 2 hours installing cushcore and I did only one rim. 90% of that time I was laughing my ass off because it seemed totally impossible task without tools intended to be used for working with truck tires. However after pushing the sidewall to the center so that the line disappears totally installation become very casual. So this time obeying the instructions is even more important than when putting together some Ikea furniture. Just remember to use liberal amount of lubricate and push the sidewall to the center also when seating the first bead.

    6:25 This was me last night, glad I'm not the only one struggling on the first bead. All the guides/video make it seem like the first bead is easy and they don't give you further instructions about tucking the bead until you do the other side.
    I gave up on just prying it over and started tucking the first bead under the CC toward the center of the rim to get slack, almost got it and had the CC slip out the other side and had to start over so I stopped for the night. Watched another video and he said to stuff the bead under the CC to the center for slack so I guess I was on the right path. CC is on the rim fairly tight so its hard to go around lifting it up enough to push the bead under it.

    Ok, here's some advice: in cush core's video they suggest installation on top of an open plastic trash can, saving your back and your wheel from damage.
    Also it is very important to utilize the thermal powers of the sunlight, not only to remedy your pasty white skin and give you some vitamin D, but also to warm up the silicone cores and the tire to make it more malleable and much easier. I install full sets in about 15 minutes, including time for the sunlight exposure.

    Tire direction rotation, I remember in the 80's or 90's some MTB racers mounted the tires wrong because they worked better that way. Foam inserts have been around for awhile but usually the intended purpose has been tube replacements for flat elimination, usually at a heavy weight price. The first I remember was called appropriately, No-Mor Flats. Expecting to see the review in August!

    I bought a set of these from Cush Core 6 months ago in Oregon . They installed them for me . This past week I needed to replace my tires. The front tire was bitch to break the bead . The Cush core pushes against the bead that your trying to break lose. And Bontrager rims and tires are already hard to break lose with no Cush Core working against you , I almost cut the tire but I was able to break the bead and get it off and get the new tire on I left the Cush Core off the front to see if I could tell a big difference. It was a huge difference but I could tell the front had less cushion. Today I wanted to replace the rear tire thought I would be even better at it since I did the front. Today I cut the tire off. I just could not get the bead to separate from the rim and the Cush Core doesn't help at all. After today these Cush Cores are not going back on my bike. Its not worth the hassle for what they give you in performance . And yes you can forget about trying to fix a flat on the trail you better have a plug system which I do carry. You will be hard pressed to get a new tube in there on the trail. They do increase dampening and they push the corners of the tire out which helps a bit in cornering . But its not a huge difference. It was easy for me to decide when I had to put new tires on. I have been putting tires on for about 30 years with no issues until today. Maybe Your rims may make it easier but the Bontrager rims a super hard to break the bead. I just don't want to work so hard and hassle with it . If I was racing and needed ever bit of edge over competition I may use them maybe not they are not easy to remove.

    Struggling to get a tyre on a rim..... been there, done that, will have to do it again very soon when I attempt a tubeless conversion on my 29er. The tyres went on the standard 19mm rim width okay but when I try to fit the same tyres to my new wheelset with 25mm rim width my experience was virtually identical to to this video.

    Just want to make a suggestion,if you cover you rotor with a plastic bag,and spray the inside of your tire,and the rim with dry silicone spray before inserting the foam insert,it will make life easier to get the tire on,but remember to completey cover the rotor befor applying the dry spray silicone.

    Am i getting this right? If the tire is on one side still a bit outside of the rim while it's fitting well on the other side, I have to drag some of the tire material to the not so well fitting side? Or do I have to push the tire a bit closer to the rim's center on that side? (Not a native speaker lol)

    I really like this product. Seems expensive but will save way more expensive rims while giving you better traction/control. My install went WAY easier.

    Magic Mary is like the hardest tire to put on with tire inserts. I have gravity casing and it took me forever + 2 broken tire levers to + another person to put them on.

    Wow, that reminds me of fitting first generation tubeless tires or ultra heavy casing downhill tires. I see the potential for this product though and look forward to your review. Price seems way to high considering what it is though...

      +Curtis Gillen that is not too far off what was going through my head as well. Expensive, but will save your expenses ass wheels in the long run, but definitely not for everyone.

      Sweetbutterflykripperino So funny that people believe, when you run tubeless tires, you will never have a flat again.

    • @peterlang5047
      @peterlang5047 Před 6 lety +2

      Lukas Radzimski you will never have a flat caused by a hole in the tube. However, you will get flats caused by holes in the tire that are too big for sealant to seal, in which case you will need to take the tire off and put a spare tube inside.

    are those the snakeskin magic marys or the super gravity casing..? i usually run the super gravity ones as i never get punctures with them however they are painfull to get on the rim and to set up tubless.

    I use ProCore since last September. It is also hard to get it on the rim and even harder to put the tire on, even on wide 30mm rims. What I want to know from this product is how good you can get the tires down from the wheels because at this point the ProCore try to teach you how the hell would feels like. I also interested in how much it actually can prevent the damage to the rim because the hug Norris looks more appalling to me for fast tire swap.

    Look into getting a kool stop tire jack. I had the same problem with road tires. I worked on them for about 3 hours with no luck. The tire jack had them on in less than five minutes.
