  • Here's a segment of the kids news featurette, In The News as aired on KELO-TV Channel 11 [Sioux Falls, South Dakota]. This particular one includes an introduction by Popeye the Sailor and deals with the subject of the 1980 Census.
Also includes a commercial break for Crayola crayons and markers.
These aired between commercial breaks during Saturday morning cartoons on CBS affiliates from 1971 to 1986 (and was for that network what the long-running animated Schoolhouse Rock featurettes were for ABC). For many years, it was the one of the only times a CBS News production had theme music. This particular segment aired at the end of Tarzan and the Super 7.
Produced by CBS News. (C) MCMLXXX CBS Inc. All Rights Reserved.
    Voiceover by Christopher Glenn.
This aired on local Sioux Falls TV on Saturday, March 22nd 1980 at a little before 12:00pm.
About The Museum of Classic Chicago Television:
The Museum of Classic Chicago Television's primary mission is the preservation and display of off-air, early home videotape recordings (70s and early 80s, primarily) recorded off of any and all Chicago TV channels; footage which would likely be lost if not sought out and preserved digitally. Even though (mostly) short clips are displayed here, we preserve the entire broadcasts in our archives - the complete programs with breaks (or however much is present on the tape), for historical purposes. For information on how to help in our mission, to donate or lend tapes to be converted to DVD, and to view more of the 4,000+ (and counting) video clips available for viewing in our online archive, please visit us at:

I miss those times with the big box TVs. Christopher Glenn said "sneaked" instead of "snuck." He knew his English.

I'm a gen X'er, and I remember being in elementary school art class. Most of us had the 24 crayon box, but there was always that one kid who had the 64 crayon box with the sharpener in the back. That kid was always the "king", we'd all Brown nose him for those colors ( like aqua-teal!) we didn't have!
      Renember?

Imagine if CBS still had a Saturday morning lineup now. I could actually see (or hear) Kurt Loder from MTV News as a perfect narrator for these In The News segments.

I was born 20 days after the 1980 census! Even worse I did not move to the US until July of that year!

2:18 kids have shoes and socks on. Now kids sit around in their bare feet because they don't go outside or their mom makes them because she is too lazy to vacuum.

I think it's because they knew they were going to be on tv. I didn't wear shoes in the house back then.

Those cencus people are kinda like the IRS and they will find you. In 1990 when we were staying at a vacation ranch in a cabin a man from the census bureau came in looking for ppl who had not filled a form out. The guy and my dad sat outside at a picnic table and went over a form and got it done there.
