Nobody should pay for local brodcast channels
Thank you for giving this small CZcams creator (Antenna Man) a shout out. Hopefully, he blows up like you do.
Haha.
Antenna Man PA is awesome
We traveled in our RV fulltime for 12 years and gave up DirecTV after 3 years (took our old single knob dish from the old house & used it) due to the cost increases. Went to antennas only & never looked back. Now we've resettled into a regular house again and we only use an antenna to get all local channels & the sub channels they provide. We don't care for the current cable or streaming stuff, so we happy with getting out local channels for especially weather related issues and watching the channels like story, defy, grit, outlaw, laff,.... Along with a extensive DVD collection - we're happy paying nothing!
And if you consider your home state as South Dakota, you'll pay nothing in state income taxes too!
I already cut the cord. The only thing I am paying for is my Internet bill. I'm at peace with my decision. Thank you for sharing.
What do you do for entertainment?
I never signed up for cable. What I do for entertainment is I have some services:
Crunchyroll (anime): about $8 a month
HiDive (anime) : about $4 a month (terrible UI and may not be worth it with its poor library but has some good exclusives)
I also have Nebula and Curiousity Stream that was bundled for $16 a year and I did it to support a CZcams channel. I barely use the service, but it is also the cheapest non-free service by far.
CZcams: I watch videos for "free" (has the cost of watching ads)
Then I also read some Mangas. It is easy to find uploaded Mangas ... I mean you can officially read each chapter of a manga once for free with at least one manga company (manga plus app)
Then there are videogames. I got a refurbished computer and a refurbished gpu that I installed Linux on. With that I played steam games (like The Witcher 3) and free open source games from the Linux app repository (like SuperTuxKart). I also eventually got a Steam Deck to play games on and played some smaller titles, then I made a Batocera OS hard drive to boot into to play retro games so I do that too.
I wanna make a server, so at some point I will have Jellyfin which will allow me to be a self hosted steaming service for my family. I also wanna put ebooks on there and get digital copies of all my physical books so that we can read on the go for entertainment (and maybe find audiobook options so that I can "read" while I am doing other things like cooking or washing dishes).
I don't listen to music as much as I would like too so I want to put some music up on my server to share with my family too when I get around to it.
Me too. We get several stations with the antenna that we got from Walmart. And other than paying the one time for those, it's all free! This includes the local staions as well.(And many others.)
@@janetwoodville3643they probably do like we do - subscribe to 2-3 streaming services and binge-out for a while, then change to other services.
Sounds like I'm very lucky to live in a condo, and in high density development that has negotiating power.
Just up the road from Miami in Broward,
Hotwire's fiber internet (300+ Mbps up and down) and TV combo is about $100 monthly,
two boxes included, $8 monthly for each additional.
Tyler the Antenna Man knows his stuff!!
I really don't understand why more Americans don't have antennas to get free local stations. In the 1950s and 60s, 100% percent of TV households had at least one antenna. But today, many people act as though antennas are some sort of impossible technology to figure out or that an antenna won't work at their home. Antennas may not work for a small number of households, i.e. homes in the mountains or too far away from the broadcast location. But the overwhelming majority of US households can get their locals with an antenna.
If you spend no more than an hour researching what type of antenna you need for your home and no more than an hour installing the antenna you should be all set. I told this to a co-worker of mine and he said, "I don't have that kind of time." And I said, "Then how do you have time to watch TV?" He couldn't answer that question. Plus there are DVRs you can buy to record over the air channels. This is ultimately way less expensive for your locals than a live TV streaming service.
True but not everybody is comfortable climbing up on a high rooftop and doing the installation and running the coaxial cable, drilling holes, mounting the outdoor antenna, sealing up the work properly etc. It’s actually a skill to do it right. Hiring a professional isn’t cheap either so for many installing a good outdoor antenna is definitely an investment. With costs going up on streaming services probably a good one to consider though.
I think antennas are becoming more popular. However, not everyone is in a location where they can get reception with an antenna.
Then there are indoor antennas, although when you go that route you won't get channels as reliably.@@kingtrance307
Also, the typical American home construction makes it ideal to put a full fledged antenna... inside the attic space!!! You don't even need an eyesore that can be blown off by a storm on the roof of your house.
I've done it in two homes over the years and it works great.
@@nospamallowed4890 Good point. Makes you wonder why antennas were mounted on rooftops back in the day.
Thanks for your great information! Love Tyler the Antenna man! We used his recommendation for an in-house antenna. We put it in the highest corner of our garage closest to the tower we were trying to get. Then we hooked up the cable from the antenna to our old cable wiring which means we can plug any tv in our house up to the old cable input and they all get network tv from the one antenna!
Losing Locast was unfortunate. When we had DirecTV and during a dispute with one of the local TV networks that I think was NBC during football season that they added the Locast app so that we could still watch that network.
Indoor antennas do work for some, but not all where I am. I cannot pick up our ABC station, but pretty much the other networks are fine plus the other independent channels as well as some additional HD channels that most of the networks put out like Movies, Buzzr and even Antenna TV. It seems that my best option to get all of our channels is going to have to be an outdoor antenna since the Atlanta area is so vast.
I really appreciate all that you do to help us find cheaper alternatives for watching whatever content we can get for a lower price. I am digging CZcams TV which does have all the networks including our 2 PBS stations where no other live TV service has to date. I remember holding off a bit while I kept looking at what each live TV service is providing as far as local stations.
The Big 4 Networks saw Locast as a threat to their revenue from Retransmission Fees so they went to court to put Locast out of business. The Big 4 Networks care more about revenue from Retransmission Fees than actual viewers Sad but true.
I bought a Channel Master 100 mile directional antenna and I get all my local channels except PBS. I use their app to get their programming. I tried to find an antenna installer back then but could not find one in my area. I installed the antenna myself and it works great. I live in Florida and we get Hurricanes so I put in some 18 gauge cables to help support the 25' mast that I used. It is working fine and I've had no issues with the setup. The only thing I may do in the future is get a box that would give me the ATSC 3.0 signals that they are now broadcasting in my area. I don't need it since all my stations come in strong except CBS 12 which has a VHF signal! Hopefully in the future they do what NBC 5 did and add a UHF channel in their lineup! I talked to a Senior Engineer at Ch. 12 and they may do this in the future.
I take it your antenna is UHF only? Chances are - depending on distance - if you had a VHF/UHF antenna, you'd probably pick up that channel. The VHF elements on most combo antennas are only designed for "high-VHF" (channels 7 - 13).
Mine is a VHF/UHF antenna. @@brwilkie5856
Thank you, Michael! You are a wealth of information, and I am so grateful.
I live about 70 miles from the nearest OTA transmitter tower so therefore I do not get any local channels over the air. It is very frustrating. It’s too bad that Locast was shut down because that was very handy for watching NFL and other live sports for free. Such Internet retransmission services have to find a model complies with FCC regulations. If I recall, Locast was beginning to make money off of its service, and that is against the law.
You’re the man as always great information
No wonder why I forward your link to everyone lol
Great summary of what to expect in 2024
External antenna still sounds like the best idea to receive local stations....I hear more and more people I know are switching to antenna system!
Great video, really useful content, Thank You! I have subscribed
Hellow, Michael. I'm Dan from Ohio. Antenna now has a new problem on the horizon for Over the air tv viewers. DRM encryption. TV stations may start charging over the air viewers a subscription in order to watch their local stations in the future with Nextgentv or ATSC 3.0 on tuning tuners/DVRs.
Thank you for finding me this information. This is like paying cable. I rather read books 📚.
Yep a good Antenna with a quality amp, and LTE/5G Line, and/or CZcams TV is the way to go. CZcams TV, along w/ base Peacock for sports, & then CZcams Premium is all I pay for these days with so many free streaming services, and my Antennas picking up content.
I use an antenna and 4t 10:31 h gen Tablo and get over 100 channels near Tampa. This includes 6 PBS channels.
I had an antenna in my attic and I repurposed it by repositioning it for TV reception and now I get all the major broadcast stations for free thru it. I cut the cable at that time and the only thing I pay for is the internet (300mbps, plenty for me). Free streaming services are useful, but their commercial breaks have gotten too frequent and too long for my tastes. Lucky for me the local library has a nice selection of DVDs and Blu-rays for check-out. Total bill now is $55/mo.
I have done the same. We had an antenna in the attic, so I added a Tablo tuner to the system so we can watch on the Roku devices on any TV in the House or DVR it. Our local libraries have great DVD collections. I also pick up DVD's at thrift stores. I have over 500 DVD's in my own library that cost only $2 or $3 each. We do not subscribe regularly to any services but the free ones, but we will pick up one of the streamers for a month if there is something special we want to see.
Not what I want to hear but thanks for all the great info!
The problem with Sling carrying ABC in those larger, select markets is subscribers there pay $5/mo more for having ABC, and as far as I can tell, there is no way to opt out of ABC and save that cost. Thankfully, Sling for us carries Fox, so when we want news for a local event, usually for major storms, we're covered.
A very informative video
Thanks for sharing
I mostly use an antenna for local channels but struggle with getting ABC and Fox clearly. I also have Paramount+ and Peacock mostly for CBS and NBC. I’m very interested to see what happens with the Disney/Warner Brothers joint venture.
I do use Hulu to watch ABC and Fox shows next day but would love to be able to watch live wherever I am on my phone and tablet just like I can with Paramount+ and Peacock.
I have 3 indoor antennae. Can pick up 160 local stations. Bought my antennae during black friday at 50% off.
You are fortunate to receive your local ABC affiliate. I learned from Tyler the antenna man and doing some reasearch, ABC Affiliates use to be UHF when the digital switch was in demand. However after the reband 2.0, ABC affiliates switched to VHF which lowered their broadcast power.
This is market dependent, so the blanket statement of them reverting to VHF isn't entirely true. The digital transition basically pushed ALL locals channels to the UHF band. My local ABC (on ch 10) went to UHF 26 after the digital switch. One of the exceptions which Tyler has discussed many times, is ABC6 Philadelphia, which chose to REMAIN on VHF 6...limiting its pickup with a large number of viewers.
Antenna is the only way to go. Even when I had DirecTV I used an antenna for locals.
thanks, good info
8:36 I tried an Indoor antenna and only thing I could get was PBS. I had to use outdoor antenna to get more
This man must be a new one like tyler from Antenna Man and cord cutter news guy😄😄😄😄😄😄
In 2027, ATSC1 will be discontinued. Broadcasters are lobbying for the switchover whether or not everyone is ready. The new system is pay TV ready. Although, TV stations will be free at first, you can bet that you'll have to pay a fee or sign up to their streaming service to watch it. Because of this, I don't plan to do any upgrades to my outdoor antenna set up. I don't see the value in it if in a few years, I'll have to pay for it. I'm not watching TV now, so I don't see a point in it. If ATSC3 was what we thought it was going to be, improved reception with free TV and more channels, I would be looking to invest in a better outdoor antenna, but as it is not, I just don't think it's worth it.
I wish I could get an antenna that actually worked. I have spent as much as $80 for ones with 100 mile range and none of them worked.
It all depends how far you are from the transmitting towers....and the band which those stations are broadcasting on. Also beware of antennas that advertise pickup at exceptionally long distances. In most cases, receiving stations from 100 miles away isn't always possible. The best antennas will usually have a pickup limit of between 50 and 75 miles.
I'm surprised that the locals haven't sent me a bill for my antenna.
lol
You know they want to 😂
Don't worry, ATSC 3.0 will try to solve that.
You know they would if they could like they use to do in the UK with the old yearly TV license tax that use to fund the BBC, but is now being done away with.
I wish they'd get together and make an app that's nothing but your locals. They'd still get money on their Hulu, peacock, and paramount plus because of the exclusive content.
If you have spectrum you can stream all live locals for $9.99 plus the broadcast fee. As of today that's $35.70 a month.
I cut my cable 15 years ago and have never missed it - Rather a good riddance
All of these different apps are so hard to keep track of. What show is where and how to watch football without the live streaming service. I miss the old cable option before they got crazy with prices and fees.
It's all very spread out now
Make a video on premium cable networks like Cinemax,fx etc
TV is for seniors, but, that said, it seems to me the price of cable is simply the amortized cost of installing an antenna for most people, and since most people are mechanically inept and/or cannot install an antenna for legal reasons (living in a rental), the price of cable TV goes up. It's all good since we invested in cable stocks like Comcast so we're compensated.
Broadcast TV should be put on the internet for free. They would get more viewers and could command more money for sponsor ads. I will never pay for TV, its either free or I’m not watching.
They should drop all the locals. Let the local channel pay for its own distribution. They will have to build out more antenna transmitters and pick up the maintenance cost.
A year in a half ago I canceled cable tv service to cut expensas thinking with a digital Antenna I could watch local channels, but when I installed the Antenna I noticed I couldn't have a signal, not for even the closest channel. My conclusión is that because I live down a hill I can't get the signal, Not even on the upper floor. What is your advice? I thought it was the tv but I bought it at the end of 2022 and it was manufacture in 2021. I hope You answer this message as soon as You can and give me a good advice.
Have you heard of any issues getting local Fox stations with an Antenna? I’ve had it for over a year but this weekend I stopped receiving my local Fox station. I’ve done a couple new channel scans but haven’t been able to pick it up.
Is there a way to integrate the Mohu antenna into a streaming service channel lineup. I want to make it easy and not have to go back and forth with remote devices?
Keep up the great work and thank you for your service, there are a lot of people that would be lost without you.
I need to look into this more. I remember Locast integrated with Sling for a time. I’m not aware of Mohu doing that, but I will explore some options. The one thing I like about Tablo is it’s an app on my Roku so I access the local through that. (I have an older Tablo, not the new one shown in the video.)
Try hooking the antenna up to an AirTV device. This gives you the ability to access your antenna channels through the Sling app, alongside their streaming channels. Sling has a free streaming service (Sling Freestream) so you don't even need a paid subscription to Sling to be able to use this feature.
Or, if you have a Roku TV, just hook up your antenna directly to the TV, and use the Live TV (tuner) app built into the Home Screen. This gives you the antenna channels in the same guide as Roku's free streaming channels from The Roku Channel.
Someone on youtube showed how to stream network TV shows where you could watch network shows like 1-2 days later after initial airing. I get ABC/CW but forgot how to do it w/ CBS,NBC, and Fox. I wish I could remember how to do it, and can't find the you tube channel that showed you how to do it. Does anyone know what I'm speaking on? I remember after downloading network app I selected something on the left to install the network app, but don't remember what I hit.
Sad increases since most local stations are no more than 70% of very repetitive news....
What do you know about cuestreaming?
True but with a Samsung TV all this is built in, and add a $25.00 antenna and get all the locals!!!
Whatever service make a pick system where you can pick the actual channels you want will get more subscribers.
It won't happen. I explain why in this video: czcams.com/video/s-IiJ6XMXEQ/video.html
How do you scan for local channels when a Firestick is attached to the TV?
My Tablo is finally working great.
Nice. Do you have the new model?
They’re all expensive just for local channels ( which are free with a antenna)
I have an antenna and sling( sports) don’t really need live tv except for news and sports
If I did not travel, have multiple people in my house, and use my accounts at work, then Sling would be the way to go, but I use CZcams TV that has the locals for college football games, and Peacock for the WWE Premium Live Events.
Great info, btw can you tell me if there is a free and or inexpensive way to stream Fox News?
Not really cheap, but Sling Blue. I explain here: michaelsaves.com/save-money/best-streaming-service-cable-news/
What about a device like a home run? I don't know much about it, but is that something that could be helpful for local channels? I have an indoor antenna in my condo, but my place faces northwest, and I've heard placement is everything for antennas. Thanks.
Yes that's similar to Tablo for DVR I believe
Comcast has been raising their prices alot lately.. I'm paying over $200 per month just with TV and Internet. I tried buying an Antenna but it doesn't work in my condo bldg.. If I run a cord and place it outside I only get public broadcasting TV but need to leave the door cracked to get any stations , not good. I'm on the ground floor of a condo bldg, concrete near the beach.
Did you try it with the new Channel Master distribution amplifier? Just thought I’d ask. I bought one a few months ago when I put up my antenna and it works great.
Contact Comcast or go in person to sign up for a bundle deal. I sign up for a year at a time. I pay 155 for tv and Internet plus 2 boxes. I have my own modem to save even more.
In my opinion hulu should include a live stream of local fox station and disney plus should include a live stream of local abc station considering how many times they want to increase rates
I've said similar about Paramount+ and Peacock for CBS and NBC respectively: they should put the Live feed in the cheaper ad-supported plan, since the live local stations show ads anyway. There is no point in making those channels exclusive to the ad-free plans, if they are still going to show ads.
Unless they are ending over the air broadcasts, it is not changing at all. All I do is change the input to "antenna". Even when I had cable years ago, I still had to do that because cable was always feuding with the local channels and blocking them. So again, no change at all.
There have been changes to some of the options shown in the video, such as Puffer. It is still a good list for those of us who can't get OTA reception of all of the local network stations with an antenna. That is one thing that I hope does change, and the sooner, the better.
I stopped cable service 2&1/2 years ago. WAAAAAAAY TO PRICEY $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ I use an over the air antenna and I’m good with that. NOT gonna pay to watch TV anymore. I remember when cable started. There weren’t to be commercials and as a consumer paying for what I had hoped to be commercial free , well that didn’t last long then over time prices just kept going up.
RIP Locast😢
I stopped watching TV ENTIRELY! Broadcast TV and cable have nothing I need or want, I've climbed up out of that fetid cesspool and I'm not going back in. 😂
You stopped watching TV entirely, but you still watch CZcams?
@@crodrules Yes, I get to CHOOSE what I poison my mind with...🤣
Samsung TV plus comes free with Samsung TVS
i remember Locast it was great had all my local channels i donated money to them to get rid of the adds i hope the new service makes it but i seriously doubt it cause the networks will do the same thing to them
GREED! GREED! GREED! I friggin' HATE greedy people!
I have no interest in sports and no interest in local programming. Therefore Sling Blue is perfect for me.
Local stations are dinosaurs. I haven't watched one in years. I don't pay for any TV. I only watch free streaming channels that are ad-supported. If more people did this the greedy premium streamers and networks would have to drop their prices or go under.
If they said no to sports where would they go. Football buy itself would cost to much, but that goes for any sports. The players and owners make to much money
Yes, it's all very complicated. Sports are part of the culture. With the tech companies involved now (plus legacy media), I feel it's only driving up the cost of sports.
just buy a tablo with antenna
I got the Tablo Quad dvr with antenna and I’m glad to have local stations without the bloat channels that cable offers
Seriously considering Tablo. Seems to be a great idea for locals and those substations that the local channels broadcast.
I have Tablo and it works well with the exception of sports, it doesn’t do well with motion.
I have an antenna but I dont want a tablo or dvr I just use streaming on demand services
Local stations want to charge broadcast fees with antennas I was reading with the new signal 3.0. Tbh I about to dump it all antenna and all as the signal for any ota TV is absolute garbage due to wind, and weather changes that make ota TV garbage. Even a fart has knocked out signals. TV is not worth this cost of any cable, sat, streaming or ota.
"Even a fart has knocked out signals." Wow! What did you eat that would cause that?
I could not care about my local stations. They’re useless here. I live in Tennessee and want to watch the Knicks, Devils, Mets and Cowboys.
Sports are ruining tv
They are actually the only thing keeping TV alive
Both CBS & NBC tried to live without NFL for a couple of years in the past. Well it hurt their ratings. So they got the NFL back in future years despite the high costs per season.
@@amazingeric97The same could be said for ABC, when Monday Night Football moved over to their sister network, ESPN. The only reason ABC got it back last season was because of the writers' and actors' strikes. There wasn't enough new entertainment content to fill ABC's fall lineup, so they started simulcasting ESPN's Monday Night coverage. It will be interesting to see if ABC continues doing that going forward.
I like sports and I’ll admit I agree with you. I’d prefer a “sports add on” for each sport.
I can tell you a couple things about sports but this is hardly the channel to discuss it on but here's a hint, most of the time a sports station can be dead last in the market and it will not be shut down same with News Talk because of the purposes they both serve.
The government is taking the ACP Program away which means I won’t be able to afford my internet anymore. So I cancelled all my streaming services. I get so sick of corporate greed. COX keeps raising their rates every year. The government won’t put a price cap on COX but they’ll take our programs away. aka ACP.
Have you checked eligibility for COX’s own low-cost program? www.cox.com/residential/internet/low-cost-internet-plans.html
Frankly, I don't understand the justification to charge for streaming live local TV content. Isn't advertising supposed to already cover the costs and profits? So, is it just a cash grab from sucker consumers?
In any case, antennas are cheap. There is no need to pay for the streaming. Netflix ÷ antenna is more than enough for my needs. And FAR cheaper.
My HOA won't allow outdoor antennas.
Its illegal for HOA to block outdooor intenna. Google it for the exact law.
Install in the attic if you have one.
Free TV isn’t free anymore, but government is suing Apple??
Dude, you are 50 years late with this news! People have been using OTA antennas for their local channels since the 70s, (long before you were born) if they didn't want to subscribe to cable or satellite. Local channels always have been free with an antenna.
What a pain. Just get cable.
Do you want to pay upwards of $60 per month, just for the locals? That's what cable providers are charging now, by the time you add-in all of their hidden fees. (Broadcast TV surcharge, equipment fees, etc.) Maybe when cable providers are no longer allowed to use "hidden fees" to advertise a lower price (per a recent FCC ruling) then the actual price will come down, to make cable more competitive. Until then, the cheaper alternatives are a better option, even if they don't offer as many local channels as the local cable provider does.
@crodrules Yes. As the saying goes, people pay for convenience. We did try to save money by buying a firestick and watching TV via apps but the quality wasn't the same.
This only works for the west what about someone in west Africa
I’ve bought a 200 mile antenna, tablo and supplement with Philo. Dumping CZcams TV.
You got scammed with that antenna. There is no such thing as a "200 mile radius" antenna. You're only able to pick up channels close around the area. If it's flat, then it's pretty garbage at picking up stuff reliably from my experience
@@20thCY works great that’s all I care about. For $31 I now have 105 stations.
I hate sports. Jocks think they owned the world. I hated high school because of how Jocks and sports got away with everything. I am tired of sports getting special treatment when it takes my show off and I miss it. Best things is to get rid of sports so we can have lower cost. If people want to watch this crap, then make them pay for it. Comcast charges a sports fee so I have to pay for some neighbor to watch TV. Why should I be forced to pay for his bad habit?
Which channels do you watch on Comcast? Have you looked into dropping their TV service, and switching to a cheaper package from a different provider, that doesn't have that sports fee? With Dish's Flex Pack, for example, the national sports channels are an add-on, not included in the base pack. So if you don't want the sports channels, you don't have to pay for them. Dish doesn't even carry the regional sports networks anymore, either. So, it sounds like Dish may be a better fit for your TV service (unless a cheaper streaming service like Philo would fit your needs instead) and you could just keep Comcast for internet-only.
People are still watching these crappy local channels? Incredible. There is absolutely nothing I am interested in that I can't find online to stream. Must be all the older people that still cling to watching that crap.
Why the f would any1 watch tv the progs sucks and news is pure oropaganxa
Local TV is all rubbish anyway!
No it's not
We have over 26 channels broadcasting on terrestrial HD here in Bear county no no need for cable or satellite
I can't get fox with an antenna
