  • Documenting a "Simulated Situation"....One quite common. A person buys a brand name saw, an older one, than has to make it work. This goes through a typical debug process. Mistakes and all!
    ALSO Introduces the Husqvarna "Small Saw" line from the 1980's early 1990's. Those Husqvarna 234, 238, 42, 242, 246 saws. Metal cases, External clutches, extremely easy to work on, and really rugged little monsters. I like them.

    I am a Arborist for 25 years and have a 42 Special thats 20 years old. The best saw I have ever owned. With routine maintenance its flawless. The 325 pitch chain on a 16 inch bar... awesome!

    This world needs more of you people that are to lazy to turn a screw, but not lazy enough to complain it’s junk! F’n kills me, I’ll pay $40. For your working saw and tune it myself. Any takers? You can find me on many platforms

    I have always said, as a longtime gunsmith, that 90% of problems are user related. Usually, failure to clean and maintain, properly. I am sure saws are no different. You can bet my saws are not of these types. After every use they get cleaned and sharpened, even if it is only a maintenance sharpening. I also fill them with the correct lubricants and fuel, mixed as best that I can. I have a mixture of different equipment. I try to use the same fuel in all of my equipment. I use premium, non ethanol gas with good two cycle oil and a good fuel stabilizer. I do not mix it at the oil concentrations that some people do, but I usually mix it at 45:1. However I do have a tank of 50:1 in the shop, which I use for specific pieces of equipment. I recently used it for a new husky 135 that I bought. This tank of gas was husky XP oil at 50:1. I the reason I switched this saw to husky two cycle oil was because I was getting a little compression lock on startup. It is getting better but still gives me a little difficulty but I have no real problem starting it. When I get it broke in I will probably switch it back to my regular brew of 45:1.

    I got a PM610 in part of a trade for my ms 460 this past winter. I had to do a few repairs to it, like all fuel and bar oil lines, oil pump diaphragm and rebuild of the carb. I had to repaint a few of the covers and a few other minor repairs. I have less than $100 bucks in it, mostly for the chain. I refinished an original 610 bar for it. It cranked up on the third pull the first time. I am very pleased with it, even if I have to run 40:1 fuel in it.it will blow that husky of yours into the weeds. It is one of the easiest cranking saws I have. Even my oldest daughter cranked it(cold) in a couple of pulls. It is a little heavy but a lot lighter than some of my saws. It has a 20 inch, full chisel, full comp chain on it. It does need a set of dogs but it will cut fine without them.

    Two cutters on one side is where the links join on the shorter bar.

    I love when your talking about the basic compression test. And as you let go of the saw you laugh out load at yourself ... Like ugh this fails! ... You are funny! The joy of finding "Specials" on eBay .... Priceless! 😀👍👍

    fingertight sparkplug lol! chainsaw comedy gold I love it :) It's amazing what a little know how can do with an old garage sale or craigslist special. It's people like you that are making these craigslist posts "saws wanted running or not!" - these saws a great business opportunity if you got the knowledge and elbow grease to do some value adding ;)

    It is the raker height that determines whether it cuts straight or not. The sharpness of the cutters determines how fast it cuts. I go through any new saw before I ever attempt to crank it. It looks light. Is it light?

    Hi I have a 242 running well. Any advice on oil running out of the vent inside the clutch cover. It comes out of the front dowl or bar guide. As this saw has only one clutch cover nut. Thanks mate. Don't want to go pulling the saw apart for nothing.

    Another great video! My 36's/40's are my fav's. My lil 36 is running like an angry yellow jacket! The porting practice was great on a couple of these. I grabbed a Stihl ms250 and a new oem jug/plug its my next one! I was looking for porting vids... I guess because with that one piece still your fingers need yoga to fit in there to clean those ports! The 391 is stealing my heart... And I bleed orange! I gotta find a used muffler!!!! Needs ported yesterday... DonnyBoy got a crushed parter... I'm working on him!!! LOL what's the thin wall 5/8 to mig the muffler tubes from?

      +David Thorne Thank you. You ever measure the port timing on those saws? I haven't to this point. Might be ground to till with intake timing and exhaust with a muffler mod. I haven't taken a 250 apart yet.

      Dave use metal conduit for tibe exhaust exits. It is also easy to bend with proper tools if you want to get fancy

    • @afleetcommand
      @afleetcommand  Před 9 lety +3

      A 42 or 242? Best thing to do is buy a ring and then scuff up the inside of the cylinder to break the glaze with either a hone or 150 grit emery cloth... The roughness with a new ring will let that ring seat and you will get more compression. Also check squish... if its more than .040... you can do a 1194 no base gasket build when you put that ring in.

      I just "haunt" eBay until one shows up. I do have rings for those 238's around somewhere. Wonder if they still are any good..

    FleetCommand on my local cl someone has a husky 42 posted ad states that the saw runs great has a 16" bar with supposed new chain they're asking 150$ for it I emailed him offering a bit of a lower price hasn't gotten back to me quite yet my question is in your opinion is the saw worth his asking price if go to look at it I'm gonna ask if I can pull the muffler off to inspect the cylinder/bore by the way love your vids and my you have quite the vast collection of saws kinda jealous anyway keep it up with the vids kind sir

    • @afleetcommand
      @afleetcommand  Před 9 lety +3

      plan too. hoping to do a "saw college" first with spike60 and then go back to looking at the internals. I am also trying to find a 242xp top end. I have a 238, 42 and 246 but no 242xp closed port. These things have crazy aggressive timing stock. Really short blow downs. At least my 238 does. Also thinking about "mapping" that timing of a 42 open port like what's in this video back to a 350 44mm open port for kicks.... during those cold winter months when we are snowed in...

    It think the husqvarna didnt star up first pull after warm up because you had to choke it to death, then it is a tiny bit fludded so you need one extra pull to get rid of some gas

    Why do people start their saws without the chain break on?

    • @mattfleming86
      @mattfleming86 Před rokem

      Because it is unnecessarily hard on the clutch and the brake band. If you are drop starting one, sure. However if you have the handle gripped in your thighs or the saw is planted on the ground (with a clear bar) i'm sorry but it's a non issue.

    • @afleetcommand
      @afleetcommand  Před 10 lety +1

      Yup. Plan to first map then tweak the port timing on one of these little beasts and also make and then use offset keys to tweak ignition timing... did that on the 238 I have. Just have to have the time to build the video's. They will happen faster this winter. Will be on nite shift & have all day to work on saws.

    Evaluating the shape of a just bought used saw while using a visibly efft up cutting chain is not really doing a competent evaluating job. Loose spark plug too, arghh.
