  • I am breaking down Lucy's wardrobe and why I think this movie is costuming goals. Also just fangirling over how beautiful this movie is. I am not an expert, please feel free to comment your thoughts below because I would love to have more discussions on this topic.
This movie stars stars Helena Bonham Carter as Lucy and Julian Sands as George, and features a star studded supporting cast and is in my opinion one of the best movies ever made.

This movie and its costumes deserves so much more love ! It's really a goal in term of 1900's fashion reproductions ♡

Thank you, thank you for this video! A Room with a View is one of my favourite movies of all times. I got to know Edwardian fashion thanks to it and I love it so, so much. My favourite outfit is definitely the white summer dress Lucy wears for The Kiss Scene in Fiesole: this long, flowy skirt with the beautiful blouse are so feminine, and I'm in love with the accessories too: I want these little gloves so badly, and this hat, and the parasol, oh my. I spent last summer wearing a braid similar to the one she wears in that scene, that is to say how obsessed I am with this look.
I also liked the fact that the costume designer put real efforts into casual clothes, instead of spending all the time and money in the making of formal gowns for one scene; and, like you, I appreciated the re-use of some garments. Seeing the actors rolling in the grass, playing tennis, tripping everywhere, while wearing Edwardian clothes, was also a delight. Sometimes you feel that the actors take a great care of their costumes because they don't want to ruin it but here, they're just living their best lives in their light, precious clothes; it felt so natural!
I dream to wear such beautiful clothes in real life, but I'm only at the beginning of my historybounding journey and I don't know how to sew yet, so I have to wait a little bit. Needless to say, I would be extatic to see videos of you creating clothes inspired by this movie. By all means, do it!
Sorry, this comment turned into an essay but I'm so happy to finally see content about this topic! I suscribed to your channel ;) Have a nice weekend!

I adore this movie too. There's so many classic scenes.... the cornflowers, Mr Beeb, the tennis, the bathing! I always wanted Lucy's hair. Your analysis of the red dress is great. It was noticeablely out of place and it now makes a bit more sense.

My favorite costume piece from the film is the shirtwaist that Charlotte wears when she's schooling Lucy after their scandalous countryside drive. Last time I watched it, I paused it at that scene to take reference pictures. I vow to sew a copy some day!

"Room With a View" has been my favourite movie ever since the first time I saw it in the theater in 1985. It floored me. I took a 2 month tailoring course in the 1990s and my project was doing a version of Cecil"s linen coat with black vest. My favourite costume is the gown Maggie Smith (Poor, Charlotte) wore at dinner ("This meat has surely been boiled for broth") at the pensionne. She really knows how to swoosh an Edwardian long train. The quotes in this movie are priceless......"You know, Cecil, you are right. I do always picture you in a room"

Oh my, I'm with you for getting my friends tired of my saying "oh, this is so A room with a view" it's one of my comfort period films, I love to see it while doing craft or sewing...and the music. I cry everytime I hear O mio babbino caro, too many feelings

I have just recently become deeply obsessed with this movie and book and was partially drawn in by the film's costumes!
The thing that immediately struck me was how at least a couple of the pieces in the film (most notably the blue dress Lucy wears during the pivotal Piazza Signoria scene and the veil on her hat when she first kisses Cecil) show marked wear and tear--sun bleaching and staining--which makes me think at least a portion of the costumes for this film were extant garments. It wouldn't be super surprising for that to be the case; it would be like a movie today using extant pieces from the mid 1940s. But I am so fascinated to learn more about the costumer and costuming process for this movie. I hope there's some writing out there about the costuming influences because I simply must learn more!

It's been so long -- I was a freshman in college, and clothes like these seemed soooo faaaar awaaaaaaaaaaaaay. I'm there now. Everybody catch up, I'll wait. It only occurred to me just now, that back in 1985, we had easy access to those kinds of blouses. Too bad I have exceeded the size 8 they made them in. YES! PLEASE! MAKE ALL THE COSTUMES!!!!! Yes, make more videos!!

omg i had never met someone who shares the same OBSESSION with this film that i have until i watched the video. i agree with literally everything you say even down to the boob bite scene (apart from the costume stuff, not because i disagree but because i have no knowledge of how that works) i have read and watched this it feels like HUNDREDS of times, i had to write an essay on it for my a level coursework and studying it just made me fall in love with it, i love the characters of course but the way forster uses imagery and running themes throughout the book is just *chefs kiss* i especially loved the way things like landscapes, light, water are used to represent lucys sexuality but also her repression. i thought your point about the red dress was so interesting i always assumed that that was only written in to show how she felt terrible about herself that day or something but what you had to say sounds much more legit 😂 two things ive wondered after watching this are 1. is there any connection between lucy and charlottes outfits? it would be really interesting if they made them more similar or different depending on lucys similarity to charlotte and the whole thing of the "armies of the benighted" as she grows more like charlotte by repressing herself and lying about her feelings 2. are any of the costume choices possibly related to cecils influence over lucy? he feels like the type who would be quite fussy over what she wears. i also thought as i was writing this another possible interpretation of the red dress might be to do with cecil's idea of "lucy as a work of art", perhaps he is influencing her to wear more "artistic"/"passionate"/"symbolic" clothes despite not being what she really wants because he sees her as a work of art or a leonardo, but she just feels out of place in the dress, idk if that's a huge reach though. excuse the giant word vomit comment i will literally jump at the chance to rant about a room with a view. loved the video

One of the best films ever made. Foster is far greater than Austen in my opinion, and James Ivory is a true cinematic poet and his adaptations are absolutely superb. I live very close to Florence and the medieval villages they mentioned and visit in the film and, being half English, I sometimes feel like I'm Lucy Honeychurch on a prolonged grand tour of Tuscany 😁 glad you like it just as much. It is a masterpiece 🙏
