I really miss the Merchant-Ivory calibre of films. There is nothing like them anymore.

Most of those period pieces were bought and distributed by Harvey Weinstein. He is now in the slammer and the film industry suffers. Read the list of Miramax and W films....it is astounding.

Until that film comes, that is what makes those films special.

Love the Merchant Ivory style of film.
So grateful that they made non-Hollywood films.

It's movies like this that got me into historical sewing. They don't look like costumes, they look like clothes and that is what makes this timeless, is it's believability.

Wonderful. I am inspired by people like you. Im a painter and I’ve always wanted to create historical clothing. So far I guess Im wearing clothes slightly inspired by historical clothing, and vintage shoes that seem to be from the early 1900’s.

@diornewlookgirl8061 if it is what you want to take up, then you are definitely on a good path for it. One book that helped me start is "making edwardian costumes for women"
      It has patterns and details.
      Happy sewing and painting ❤

I first saw Room/View in 1986 while attending the university in the US: 4 or 5 times in the 3-week span it ran at the campus movie theatre. I dragged friends along with me every time.
I have lived in Italy for the last 3 decades--and it's all your doing Messrs Merchant & Ivory & Miss Ruth.

It changed everything. For modern 'art house' movies in America, there is everything before 'A Room with a View' ... and everything after.

Hollywood would have ruined it, as they do with most stories. I've never understood why they take a popular classic and change the story/characters to such a degree, they become unrecognisable.

    Sublime film.
Though I love the cast, and think they were perfect in their roles I find it fascinating to hear of the other actors who were up for parts and how the film would be subtly different if they had been cast.
Thank heavens they stayed well clear of Sam Goldwyn.

It's marvelous how M & I suggest the artificiality of the upper class characters orthodox response to Italian culture and to life generally. Mr. Emerson is WONDERFUL! Don't miss the quotation from Thoreau he has painted on his wardrobe. And Lucy...what a gorgeous head of hair. We see her being saved from that artificially by the circumstances of the film and her own pluck.

An extremely well made film - no fake -and the more then lovely characters, perfectly posed and they acted like it was flawless. It was flawless, especially as my then wife to be went there before the filming. It's very rare to see the views and the acting come to such a delicate lovely perfection. Now I am supposed to put an emoji. I will not and cannot - Beauty cannot be put in an bland 'emoji'.

I so enjoyed this movie and the local theater played it for about 3 weeks. I went often as I loved the setting, costumes and the acting that by week 3, the theater owners let me in for free. I still enjoy this film as if seeing for the first time...a timeless story told.

James Ivory said that Hugh Grant originally auditioned for Cecil and Ivory said no because he was too good-looking in another interview. Ivory did remember Grant for the part of Clive Durham in Maurice and he was perfect for it.

I've always thought the pond scene was a pretty on-the-nose reference to Walt Whitman and the "souse with spray" part of Song of Myself but I'm surprised that I've never seen this mentioned anywhere before. The preceding shot is of Julian Sands dressed just like Whitman in the famous Samuel Hollyer engraving and adopting an identical pose, so I'm convinced it's not just a coincidence

fascinating the actor choices and his decisions
i agrée that rupert everett(yikes) and Hugh Grant are way too handsome cool for this film.
it's impossible to imagine them being kind of geeky
as Cecil and even the Julian Sands character, kinda geeky in different ways
    the characters are rather earnest
and the only one who is rather ironic is the priest

It's interesting to hear James Ivory's thoughts; though I personally disagree with him about the actor choice(s) for George. Julian Sands kind of tanks the romance for me. I think Hugh Grant could have been great -- like his later character in Four Weddings and a Funeral.

Considering where George Emerson comes from, who his father is, the way he was brought up, Hugh Grant would’ve been as out of place in this picture as Darth Vader.
