    Having just watched 'A Room with a View', I then went straight for this great work of 'Howard's End' as well. A film that one can never tire of. I'm afraid it's an era of great film making that is long gone. 'A Passage to India', 'Shadowlands', 'The Sting', 'Out of Africa' etc. have faded away. The only great exceptions would be some different films, yet quite watchable in 'A River Runs Through It', 'Legends of the Fall', 'Gladiator', 'Braveheart', 'Michael Clayton', 'Syriana', 'Spy Game' and a few others. For the longest time, I have not been able to say that a movie was truly great and excellently cast. Despite all of the money that James's Cameron ploughed into 'Avatar' and 'Titanic', they were only entertainment and hardly what I would view as great. I have a very eclectic taste in films and can easily enjoy a nicely made film for entertainment reasons, romance, get one thinking or simply to occupy some time. I cannot for the life of me understand why all the current screenwriters of today do is to continue re-make after re-make and ridiculous comic book movies. I could write a better film myself and I gather many other commentators could as well. Everything is all about CGI and the ability to truly act doesn't even matter anymore. We need to continue to appreciate not only the great films, yet the great actors who made them this way. I look back at the films I grew to love in my homeland of Australia of 'Gallipoli', 'The Man From Snowy River', 'The Lighthorsemen', 'The Year of Living Dangerously', 'All the River's Run', 'Breaker Morant', 'Mad Max', 'A Town Like Alice' and a few new films in 'Danger Close', 'William Kelly's War', 'The Water Diviner', 'The Dressmaker' and 'Red Dog'. Australia has become known as a great place to make movies, yet hasn't produced anything of real substance for quite sometime. Just as video killed the radio star, the greed of Hollywood has lead to the demise of any real films. At least technology has given us the chance to re-live the greats whenever we choose. At least we can be grateful for that.🇦🇺💖👩🏼‍🎨

    This TV adaptation: 6.5/10, and I’m being generous. David Lean’s 1984 movie adaptation: 9.0/10 The key problem with Lean’s version is that it does not show correctly the magnitude of British oppression in India, and India’s discontent with the British.

      That’s not what cost him his marriage. He had many affairs, including one with Ringo’s first wife Maureen when Ringo and Maureen were still married. Eventually, George’s first wife Patti Boyd left him for Eric Clapton. It was Patti, who had suggested that they all go to see the Maharishi. She and her sister had already been to some classes in London. After that, George became interested in Indian music and learned to play the sitar. The time he spent doing that, wasn’t the problem.

    One of Forster's more obscure moments: what IS Margaret's motivation for accepting Wilcox's proposal?

  • @Autostade67
    @Autostade67 Před měsícem

    Ah, yes...this clever track used to such excellent effect in the film, just squeaks by temporally. The tango, from what historical understanding I have of it, reached Paris round about 1909-1910 so, realistically, there is every possibility it may have jumped the Channel soon after and a place as chic as Simpson's have had it on their menu (Forster's novel dates from 1910).

  • @Autostade67
    @Autostade67 Před měsícem

    Let's face it, the film versions of A.R.W.A.V, Maurice and Howards End are essentially a trilogy - thematically [truth of self, the connection/dialectic of heretofore socially incongruous persons] and Robbins weaves a particular musical continuity between the three, culminating in Howards End finding that golden mean between the sunny outcome of 'A Room' and the darker, less resolved social realities of Maurice (remember, in 1910, an unmarried single mother of the bourgeois British class would have been a scandalous figure; Wilcox, whose entire sense of privilege has been unravelled by the end of the film, has no choice BUT to cede to Margaret's bequeathing of the house to her nephew (Helen's son by Leonard Bast).

    The was a bit of hoopla that Kenneth Branagh's 'Hamlet' of 1996 was the first film shot in 70mm since Ryan's Daughter in 1970...but in an interview with James ivory that I came across on CZcams, the interviewer points out that it is rarely mentioned that Howards End was shot in 70 mm. Ivory confirms this - that Tony Pierce-Roberts wanted to establish a particular tone for the film by using 70mm and different film stock than usual. The results, as we see, are gorgeous: I feel he was denied a much deserved Oscar (I have no issue with Phillippe Rousselot's work overall - Rousselot himself should have at least been nominated for 'Henry & June' in 1990...I just don't feel his Oscar winning 'A River Runs Through It' is the equivalent of 'Howard's End'.

    The best title I've a come across for a soundtrack cue: if you remember, 'Edna Mae' is the imaginary erotic figure Maurice's psychologist/mesmerist conjures in order to 'readjust' Mr. Hall toward the ladies. She is seen only briefly in a dream sequence floating like a pre-Raphaelite corpse along with an equally 'dead' Maurice, their Cambridge punt looking more like a double coffin. One can only imagine Mis Edna Mae's surprise indeed if she happened upon Lord Risley, Clive, or Maurice in some Edwardian Alley with some marble mouthed yob from the Kings Own Rifles. And hats off to Ben Kingsley for taking on the role of the psychologist: Kingsley, who arrive like a meteor with his singular performance as the Mahatma five years before, had slipped into semi-semi-obscurity; his slightly comic, and ultimately brilliantly sympathetic character (complete with continental American accent) is a jewel

  • @Autostade67
    @Autostade67 Před měsícem

    'Maurice' was made in 1987 for a mere 2.5 - 3 million dollars and to see the film now -as then, (when a mid-budget film cost about 10 million) one wonders how it was done. Pierre L'homme's photography alone gives the a visual depth of a much more expensive film (along with costumes, set dec, and a stellar cast). For lovers of the film check out some of the excised material from the original rough cut (they actually shot the entire book but scenes were cut for length including an amazing scene where a game of charades thick with irony is played in a drawing room) and an opening montage that is very different from how the film actually opened in final cut (the final cut opening is more faithful to the book's opening chapter).

I love him SO much! And the pond scene, where the boys are swimming and playing and splashing… I saw absolutely nothing erotic about that at all! For me, it was just three boys having a blast being “children“! I grew up in the country and lived this kind of experience in complete innocence as a child. That’s all I saw in it! It’s one of my most favorite scenes in the entire film! I laughed so hard I was weeping when I first saw it! It is cinematic perfection! Such a great film!
