I agree, in my first and second viewing of this movie I didn't realize it was him or that it was a white actor. I think now that it's a great character actor performance. Just like Hugh Griffith's Arab Sheik performance in 1959 Ben-Hur. I'd watch that movie every year and never realized he was a British actor.

Absolutely wonderful. Who can fail to love and treasure all these artists. Ronny's right -- Guinness was perfect and any concerns about his race were idiotic.
I'm actually sorry for anybody who'd make an issue about that. Times change and people get dumber

It irritates me when Europeans or Americans talk about White vs. Indian -- as if Indians were not white! Duh. Such ignorance.

@@beatrizbecker3728 Gee, you're right -- that's why Zubin Mehta is indistinguishable from Dick Van Dyke!

The first couple times I saw this movie I never realized it was Obi-Wan as Godpole. I thought his characters in difference to the plight of his fellow countrymen Aziz when he went to Mr Fielding to ask if he could use his name for the school that GodPole was thinking about starting, was outrageously insensitive, and cooly played by Alec Guinness. This indifference amidst The Fall out from the disastrous Aziz and Miss Quested cave trip which was caused due to Godpole keeping Fielding from catching the train because of his long prayers. I thought Alec Guinness's character actor performance was as chameleon as any part played by Vito Scotti on tv, or Ned Beatty playing the bumbling villain sidekick Otis in Superman or the chairman of the board in network

It's crazy how people first forget things, then twist them around and present that as a the truth. Guinness WANTED to do a dance, did it, then was displeased that Lean left if out of the final cut.

@@rehan2118 Because there are many Indian actors who could have played the role, but the outrage is deeper. Guiness is a great actor but even he couldn't convince any one that it was a kind of "black face" something one would have occurred to Lean. It doesn't ruin the film for me but I find that I must look away when he is on screen.

@@davy91101 probably David Lean wanted a STAR well known because his previous film, Ryan’doughter, was a flop , very bad critically….( And the other
      actors we re not stars.)

This movie was from back in the 80’s. It wasn’t a cultural consideration at the time and Alec was a well known character actor. I thought he played the character well and respectfully. Then again, it is kinda blackface so I understand why it doesn’t pass today.

David Lean should of Not Casted Sir Alec Guinness as an Old Indian College Professor...it was 100% Miscast...and Lean was saying...No Actor in India could of played a Professor Narayan Godbole...I too was shocked and truly appalled at this casting...just like how awful Mickey Rooney played The Japanese Landlord in Breakfast at Tiffineys.
