It was so wonderful to hear him say the community is already considering rebuilding in the original styles, the original building plans but upgraded beyond the store fronts to be stronger and better! That would be inspirational because Lahaina is an historic Hawaii community. I feel blessed to have visited Maui and Lahaina just three months ago. Love and prayers. Hope to support you and glad to hear his suggestions on ways to make a difference. ❤

These businesses will be closed for at least six months. Those who have sufficient insurance and resources will be able to rebuild. Those without will need to sell their properties to survive. Luckily, the nearby hotels and mild climate will sustain temporary housing for construction workers and displaced families. Water, sewage, electrics should be restored quickly. But the extent of the destruction will make renewal and reconstruction a long term project. It won’t be the same but it will be rebuilt. Maybe they will open farms on the mountain side of the highway. Best wishes!

I recently adopted two dogs from a native Hawaiian friend who died that were on their way to the pound. Their names are Tufa and Nani. I was told Tufa, the males name, means powerful and Nani, the little girl, means beautiful. This describes them perfectly as it perfectly describes the Hawaiian people. Such a sad situation to be in. Loss of life, jobs, and homes. I know there have been alot of wildfires, but this is a island. It is not easy to just pick up and move to another state. Everything you need has to be flown in or shipped in to you. It is not cheap to live on an island. There economy does depend on tourists, even no cruise passengers. It is hard to lose every single thing you own, a car, clothes, home, job, and personal items. What do you do, just start over, never lose faith, try to be positive, and believe. A simple shower, brushing your teeth, clean clothes, none of that now, very sad. My heart goes out to the beautiful island of Maui, yes you can always rebuild, but it is not ever going to be the same. The people that are missing and friends family do not know where they are and can not get in touch with them. The loss of the pets is very sad too.

I lived on Oahu for 14 and a half years. I didn't do much "Island Hopping," but I remember visiting Lahaina a couple times. I recall having dinner upstairs at Captain Jack's. - My memories of my life on the islands was so wonderful. This has changed everything. I feel angry for what has happened despite it being said that it was a "Natural Disaster."
I honestly don't see how ANYONE could have a desire to go back and re-build!
This "Hurricane Fire" reminds me of the attack on Pearl Harbor. 2,403 lives were lost in the attack plus the USS Arizona. The warning sign situation was very similar to what has happened in Lahaina. - Honestly, Maybe the people of Lahaina feel they are a community and Ohana, but I sense SERIOUS EVIL energy lurking overhead! It won't matter if the the area is cleaned up. What has happened will stay there. There will be even more conflicting energy to combat that's being thrusted upon the Hawaiian people.
I left in 94. - It's been 29 years yet this situation has left me angry. All that was good has been wiped out. This is an assault on everyone past and present. As much as I miss the islands, and I'm not a fan of living on the mainland, I feel grateful for what I have right now, with the absolute knowing that I have no desire to return after this.

Most fires that burn one-to-five house get zero government support or innovation. We lost 4 of the 14 houses burned in the giant San Luis Obispo fire and received zero assistance from anyone. On the one hand we have high expectations for what the government could and should deliver and on the other hand we had very little understanding of what actually happens. FEMA only kicks in if the tax base is endangered.

Natural fires do not melt car engines and boats out in the harbor and bend steel I-Beams. Gasoline will not do it either regardless of how strong the winds are. Something very unnatural happened and it seems nefarious. The melting point for aluminum (some car engines) is over 1200 degrees Fahrenheit. If the atmosphere was that bad, there wouldn't be anyone or anything left.

it is sad that only outsiders can open and own businesses in Hawai'i's best locations. Instead of locally owned.. This person doesn't even live in Hawai'i. but thanks for the jobs and all your support of artists. Maybe if we thank you enough locals will get a small piece after they rebuild. but probably not. it's great that you'll be getting subsidies for all the damages you incurred. Why would Lahina want your input on how to rebuild her, it should be local leaders of the community. help locally owned businesses we don't need more developers giving out their helping hand, that live thousands of miles away. Only seeing the islands as a business expense and bottom line figure. but don't worry those are the exact type of people who are early to file their paperwork and push their agendas through on top of this disaster. Why wouldn't the local community be in such dire need of an art gallery? owned by a businessman in san fran... thanks?
