Plantation Disaster Capitalism: Native Hawaiians Organize to Stop Land & Water Grabs After Maui Fire

  • With the death toll from the Maui wildfires at 111 and as many as 1,000 still missing, we speak with Hawaiian law professor Kapuaʻala Sproat about the conditions that made the fires more destructive and what's yet to come for residents looking to rebuild their lives. Decades of neocolonialism in Hawaii have redirected precious water resources toward golf courses, resorts and other corporate ventures, turning many areas into tinderboxes and leaving little water to fight back against the flames. Now many Hawaiians say there is a power grab underway as real estate interests and other wealthy outsiders look to buy up land and water rights on the cheap as people are still reeling from the loss of their family members, livelihoods and communities. "Plantation disaster capitalism is, unfortunately, the perfect term for what's going on," says Sproat, who just published a piece in The Guardian with Naomi Klein and is professor of law at Ka Huli Ao Native Hawaiian Law Center and co-director of the Native Hawaiian Rights Clinic at the University of Hawaii at Mānoa School of Law. "The plantations, the large landed interests that have had control over not just the land, but really much of Hawaii's and Maui Komohana's resources for the last several centuries, are using this opportunity, are using this time of tremendous trauma for the people of Maui, to swoop in and to get past the law."

      I agree with you. The allocation of water for native Hawaiians on their ancestral land should not be sold off to private businesses. I’m glad the governor has the power to make sure the land and water rights of the people aren’t stolen in a time of crisis. Unlike the north american tribes, the Kānaka Maoli have been forced to live among their oppressors, as dependent servants of a plantation and tourism industry they do not own or control, but are subjugated by. Lahaina is not for sale.

      One of the problems is that indigenous Hawaiians in Maui "don't own enough of the island" to have the power to decide how that land is going to be used. These people were colonized by a foreign government that set them up to fail, insuring that they and all of their descendants would be coolies for the colonizers, paying taxes as "protection money". Sadly, indigenous Hawaiians who "can't keep up with exorbitant cost of living" end up homeless on their ancestors' seized lands.

    Native Hawaiians need to stand strong, fight in the mist of this unexplainable loss. Native Hawaiian people are being robbed of their history, nation, and their rights as the true owners of the islands they owned. It's disgusting that real estate and large developer investors are using this time of catastrophe as an opportunity to profit. Someone should collect the names of REA's to put them out of business with future clients. My homeowners fire insurance doubled this year due to all the fires in Washington, Idaho, Oregon, Calif and the rest of the western states that had forest fire. They took our money all those years when no fire occurred making large profits, now doubling, rip off.

    A huge percentage of victims are producing potential evidence of the massacre effort: no water, no power, no alarms going off during the event that are purposed for these types of events, and all car doors shut revealing no effort of families to escape after hours of roads blocks preventing escape, and no phone service during the fire. The Emergency Proclamation which prevented families from getting any soil samples, photos, etc to help receive home insurance benefits also slowed any effort to grieve. Governor spoke to a world audience just weeks before on smart cities, many have seen the videos of the planned smart city for this area. My fingers would be worn out but you're simply going to block me away but this is not going to go away.

    Being a Native of Hawaii (Kauai/Niihau) my heart breaks for Lahaina. The area should rebuild again when it's able too, but I also think they should build a heiau in the area as well for those who have been lost and may never be fully recovered. The people need to stay/stand strong against all those who are trying to take the land away from you all. My heart goes out to all of those affected by this fire may God watch over you, Aloha

    Never forget that it was the Locals who turned off the water 💦 and didn’t sound the siren 🚨 when they knew the fire 🔥 was heading toward the town. Blaming old wounds is just deflecting the blame.

    These people lost everything but their lives. The state threatens to reclaim the land as happens after any disaster in Hawaii. The Native Hawaiian people have been robbed of their nation, their history and their rights as the true owners of the islands. They deserve to retain their ownership of the ground they have occupied until this disaster took away their homes. What the residents determine to do is a decision for them to make on their own terms without threats of government overreach. SMH

      Not to minimize the tragic loss, given the age and type of construction of most of these old wood houses, most of the people who got burned out, their property is worth more today without a house on it than it was with a house on it before the fire. More so if they had fire insurance and they get that payout. They didn't lose everything, though in the moment it may feel like it.
      When they say people are getting offers for their property they never say how much those offers are for. I believe that there should be a temporary moratorium on sales and that there should be adequate public support for homeowners during the moratorium so they can make rational decisions regarding their homes based on their own circumstances and what's best for them and their families. But long term government should not prevent people from selling their property for the highest and best price if that's what they choose..

      The very same is happening in my little area of Montana where we speak? Property values have at least doubled in last few years. Forest wildfire threat today that could wipe all of this out, who would be able to resist a good offer?

    There is one non-profit public funding going on created by a Maui local citizen 'realtor' where it is a collective funding to rebuild or buyback any lost lands. The fund is set up to be transparent with an accountant who is maintaining open books for authorities. Their goal is 1.5B I believe which is what it would take to restore or repurchase.
    I guess there is no political reason to mention this?

    The land grab has already happened,the mega rich own most of Maui. Most people who live in Lahaina are workers,they are employed by restaurants and service providers. They were not owners,they were renters and the land in now more valuable for resale by owners. The power structure is skewed to favor the wealthy as it always does.

      Nanny stevens , having been there to set up is domestic workers , hotel workers are native hawaiians . at hotels receptionists are either japanese, chinese or happa Haole . and everyone else that owns land , that pay for hotel is white. .
