  • How many decisions do you make in a day? The number is higher than you might guess. It’s estimated that the average person makes 35,000 decisions every day. And for leaders, many decisions have to be made on behalf of others.
So how do we make sound decisions in times of chaos and crisis? As a child, little did Debreon Davis know that a simple directive from her grandmother to “stand up straight” would have such a profound impact on her ability to make decisions as an adult.
Debreon Davis is a lifelong educator who loves God and loves people. Debreon currently serves as the Executive Director of Secondary Education in Edmond Public Schools, spending 10 years prior as a high school principal. Debreon consistently serves her community through leadership coaching, mentoring, and education. Her efforts were nationally recognized when she won the National Milken Educator Award in 2017 for her work with high school students, challenging them to see their potential and fight for their personal growth. Debreon is an active educator, leader, and public speaker who believes in the power of spreading love and hope.

im 18 and just today I’ve found myself in debt for the first time . dreams postponed, events passing by, self isolated, and i’ve noticed today before i went to work to pay this thing off i took a pause and meditated . i did one thing right, but after watching this video I did what i was missing earlier: standing up straight . taking that pause to reevaluate, then the deep breath to proceed into action . rising to action in the face of adversity, taking a torch forward plunging thru its shadow for right, being willing to let life happen to you and evolve your outlook on it . because in the end, the good and bad things in lyfe is what makes u cool anyway .

As a medic in the Army, I would always teach my junior Soldiers that when they came upon a casualty, they must take a second, one second and collect your thoughts and yourself, before you went to work. That second always helped me to focus and provide the best care I could. When you’re surrounded by chaos and violence, your medic must have one of the most focused minds on the battlefield.

I always told mine, "Scott, if you're reading this, basic training hasn't even started yet. We're still at reception, and you overslept! Wake up, Scott Drill Sergeant is coming!"

This is Brilliant! I was at the sink rinsing off some fruit when I heard her instruct me... to stand up straight. I'm tall... I can't tell you how many situations arise where I am more bent over than I'd like to be. I've got a lot of personal growth and just plain mental health things I've got to work on in my life, but her talk made me pretty damn confident that if... all I did... was stand up straight as much as I can and breath deep while I do it... just remembering and being conscious enough to do it ~ a surprising amount of that other stuff might just take care of itself!

Simple and thought provoking speech. I too head a school in remote part of Uttar Pradesh in India. Successfully overcame the epidemic together as a team. Thank You so much for the message - STAND UP STRAIGHT to breath better and take bold yet compassionate decisions. 👍

None of this happens when I "stand up straight." When I do that I feel I'm putting on an act, a front, salesman persona, literally a fraud, a liar, one trying to deceive myself and others. It adds pressure, makes myself less confident, etc.... Just another on the checklist of things making me question things (and yes already had professional help for years and that didn't help).

Ok...I totally agree with breathing. But what does this actually have to do with the cognitive process of making a decision? Taking a deep breath is not going to help me make a decision.

God loves you and takes care of you. The biggest loss that a person loses in this life is to live and die while he does not know God or His Messenger, Muhammad, the last of the prophets and the Islamic religion, the last of the heavenly religions, from intelligence. Before you believe in something or not, study it and try to understand it well, and then you have the choice. By reading the Noble Qur’an with translation and trying to understand it before time runs out
