  • I finally get a chance to show performance between the SO Cummins and HO Cummins to see which one is faster to 60 and MPG. I used a 2023 RAM 3500 and RAM 2500 which have similar weight due to trim levels. || Like || Subscribe || Share || #JBReviews #cummins

    Six weeks ago we traded our 2018 2500 for our 2023 limited 3500 HO dually that we ordered, we opted for no air suspension and installed aftermarket instead. So far I could not be happier, there are definitely big differences between the 2 as far as the transmissions go off the line, but this is the bottom line, this truck was put on this earth for one reason and one reason only and that is to move really heavy sh&t, and it does every bit of that and then some.(stops it on a dime as well) love the videos, keep it up

    Just bought a 24" 3500 Ram H.O. and it's a serious tow Monster. Would the 68rfe in a 2500 work, sure. But My Lord the H.O. is built to work. Been buying new trucks(9) from Ford's to Chevy's to Ram's since 2011 and thought I have experienced it all when it comes to diesel 3500 trucks and this 24' H.O. Puts a smile on my face.

    I have a correction on my last message I sent you I was wrong, I just purchased a 2023 ram 3500 I stated to you that the difference on the tire pressures was 65 front and 80 rear on the 2500 which is correct but then I stated the 3500 factory setting is 80 psi all the way around, well when I test drove the vehicle from the factory it was 80 psi all the way around but when the dealer did the prep work on the truck They set the front at 60 psi front and 80 rear and I told him that’s wrong it’s supposed to be 80 all the way around then they showed me the sticker on the door and it does say 60 front 80 rear so again I don’t want to sound like an idiot I was wrong, thanks for the review buddy I always enjoy your reviews you’re a good guy, you have a very classy way of doing your reviews👍

    I just bought a 2022 3500 Tradesman, 12,200 miles, in the Omaha Orange that I’ve sought for about five years at a Ram dealer in Ohio.
    I flew out there Friday AM from Vegas and was done at the dealer by 1600 and on the road. HO, AISIN , 5th wheel etc etc. Note my avatar.
    Net of it is 2200 miles, 33 hours, 21 MPG. That’s mostly at 65-80 mph and includes 600-ish miles from Amarillo TX to Flagstaff AZ with consistent 30 mph headwinds (not fun last Sunday). I have a pic of Trip A for the record!
    I’m perfectly satisfied. 😃

    Nice to finally see this test! If Ram would at least offset the weight of the Cummins with extra GVWR they would sell way more 2500's. Even though the interior has been around a while it still looks really good. Not exactly timeless but it has aged well. My 2017 68 RFE has well over 90K with a deleted and tuned engine since 7000 miles and no problems. It has towed a Travel trailer, water trailer, and a fifth wheel its whole life. Don't get me wrong I am knocking on wood lol🤣

    The gear ratios of the 2 transmissions are different. The Aisin is a medium duty transmission and has a lower 1-2-3 ratio compared to the 68RFE. This easily explains why the Aisin is slower to speed through the first gears. Aisin: 1-2-3: 3.75, 2.0, 1.34 68RFE: 1-2-3: 3.23, 1.84, 1.21

  • @IonicBrick

    So my 22 3500 HO mega is in the body shop, and I’ve got a 23 2500 Cummins as a rental. Empty the 68rfe is more pleasant to drive… but when I put 10k behind it that 2500 seems like a working dog. It does it, but it’s not what it wants to do. My HO eats that 10k like its not even there. I’m actually surprised that the speed test was that close. It certainly feels like the SO is faster than that. From someone towing 5k to 12k every day, I can’t wait for my HO to be back. It’s a huge difference with weight behind it.

    • @fivesfilms
      @fivesfilms Před rokem

      I agree with this. When towing 10k on the freeway and having to accelerate and pass, the So, IMO, doesn't have the power under load.

    • @IonicBrick
      @IonicBrick Před rokem

      @@fivesfilms For sure. Even just the initial take off is weaker. And for some reason, maybe it’s just the 23, the SO is much less aggressive in tow haul mode. My HO keeps the motor between 1200 and 1800 rpm’s at all times and leaves the truck in a gear to do so. The SO is happy to be in 4th gear doing 30mph, making me manually shift so the truck doesn’t hunt. And when I decelerate the downshifts do less in the SO to aid in braking.

    The 2500 you tested has the "optional" air ride in place of a coil spring, hence the smoother ride. The 3500 SRW you tested is a leaf spring truck with the "optional" air bag leveler, not air ride as claimed. That's why there a substantial difference in ride quality.

There’s a lot of things I miss from the Ram, the exhaust brake power being one, but at the same time when towing under 10k sometimes going down hill it was too strong, vs this ford it does well (dare I say better downhill) with this size load, but when you start going over 10k, that’s where the Rams exhaust brake starts to really shine!

    With the HO you don't want to go past 3/4 throttle, full throttle makes the trans hold to a higher rpm which slows down the acceleration. I'm assuming this is similar to past Allison trans, where you floor it when towing and it holds the gear to red line.

    The steering probably feels loose on the 1 ton because they run 80 psi tire pressure all the way around the 2500 comes from the factory with 65 psi in the front and 80 psi in the rear that’s their recommendation I purchased a 2022 2500, it is super comfortable truck but I am towing And yesterday I traded in for a 2023 3500 and because I tow aproximately 15,000 pounds almost 7 days a week for over four months a year I need the heavier duty truck also the problem I’ve had with that air suspension on the 2500 there is no springs it’s just air so for example when I’m loading and unloading my tractor on my trailer as you know driving up the ramps it will lift the truck a little bit so I have to block the back of the trailer so it doesn’t squat but when the weight goes on the back of the trailer the airbags when you start the vehicle pump up to make up the difference I’ve had the side of my truck so tall and I’m 6 foot tall The top of the bed was up to my chin & this happens every time I unload my tractor and let’s say I want to disconnect the trailer it’s really hard to get the trailer off because it’s so high in the air and the air bags do not go down until you drive it about a half a block it’s a real problem for me but again I’m also towing about 15,000 pounds on a regular basis and that’s one of the reasons I got rid of my 2500 I love the truck it’s so comfortable but definitely not good enough for towing heavy weight and the brakes are not powerful enough as compared to the one tton also what I like about the 2500 when you’re not towing if you’re on a rougher road if you stop the vehicle and go into alternate ride height you can lower the back 1 inch and makes the ride much softer. The airbags on the 3500 will self adjust to the weight you’re carrying to keep the truck level but on the 3500 if you stop and go to alternate ride height it will drop the back of the truck 1 inch and give it a little bit softer ride, I’ve had both systems and now I’m back to the 1 ton which is going to work better I’m going to miss the comfort of the 2500 but when driving on the road when you’re not towing you can always air down the tire pressures to give you more comfort, thanks for the videos, I watched a bunch of your videos mainly when I buy a new truck and what one of your reviews pop up ha ha and every time I see your videos I always say this guy is a good dude!!👍👍👍👍

      Where I got my truck the tires ask for 80 psi but I keep them around 70. If I'm towing I might put the rears max at 75 just because I'm scared of the heat here in Texas.

Ram needs to step up on the output and I'll be a fan. Yeah the 3500 can tow more like a lot more but your paying for that and if you do a lot of towing then the Ram is for you. 90+ grand for this truck is crazy though

    Cummins has the BEST engine brake period. I owned 6 semis all with the ISX Cummins motors and the main reason I purchased them was because of the superior engine exhaust braking system. Cummins had a whole cam dedicated to engine braking. I would chew bubble gum with 79500 lbs going down Sandstone Mountain in West Virginia ( a true 6% grade) any trucker worth their salt will tell you this is a top ten list for mountain braking. Cummins handled it like a sweet dream. Detroit and Catapillar=total fail on engine braking. Cummins passed with flying colors with room to spare. Facts.

    Standard cummins is 19 to 1 compression which is a whole lot of compression. High output is a lil lower. That's why cummins shake the whole truck when you turn it off. Alot of momentum on the straight 6 block. 😂

    I'm guessing the reason they rated the GVWR that much lower than the axle ratings (notice the difference in the 3500) likely has alot to do with commercial ratings and having to meet certain legal criteria. It's insane that the GAWRs are more than 2k pounds more capacity than the GVWR; whereas in the 3500 the difference is so slim. I wonder how much the "cost of compliance" has to do with that? Seems like they could have put 5k lb axles instead of 6k to save some $$, but no - the capacity of the axles are far beyond the compliance sticker. Hmmm ??

    As an owner of a 22 Ram 2500 Limited, the payload is pathetic. But I will say, it pulls like there is nothing behind it. Tow a triple axle race trailer, insane tongue weight and even though it squated the truck a bit, it did it like nothing. Added bags, and the weight is no longer an issue. Is it legal, ehhhh. But the trucks can do it no problem. Sucks that they are rated so low.

    I’ve been saying this ever since they came out with the HO. The extra power is just in a certain rpm range and so for the most part the power difference is negligible. And also with as much torque management these trucks have to have it’s kind of pointless anyway. The 860 or whatever the standard output has is way more than any of us will ever need.
