    It is a beautiful car , beautifully restored , the performance is a bonus , Rusty was obviously a genius , Ford should bring back the Capri.

      The Capri was a one off that can't be replicated. If they tried, it would probably end up as some awful SUV with an electric motor. No thanks, I'll stick with the original masterpiece.

      Thing is it’s not a Capri though. It’s a saph floor pan. So I’m struggling to see how it kept it’s capri identity.

    These absolutely works of art, are righfully cherished in the car community. Not a capri fan myself, but definitely a fan of anyone putting this level of effort and determination into a vehicle. The results speak for themselves. Absolutely amazing!

    I am so sad to hear Rusty has passed away. He was a lovely man and I bought my first YB engine unit from him at the “Union Garage” he showed me how to wire up the unit, which I made 4x4 and shelled it into an XR4x4 on a D plate. He was building the Capri at the time and WOO started life as 1.6 Lazer automatic. I had endless 1/4 mile races at York Raceway with Rusty in H810 JNE and he like most drag racers where a small friendly community, H810 JNE eventually managed a 10.96 quarter in the early 90’s and it was all thanks to Rusty, teaching me the craft.

      he fitted me a torque convertor in my supra i used to go to racing at york and sandapod, i had a bump in mine at york been sat for years, some great memories back in the day and rusty was a nice humble guy. my best time was 11.962@114mph on stock turbos but with cams and cam gears and decatted exhaust. seen your just do 1/8th mile racing now. when i had a mk3 supra in the 90s had a couple of mates with xr 4x4 cars. do like the old fords like mk1 escorts

      It was built years ago by Mr Kennedy (can't remember first name) and went 0-60 in under 3sec 20yr ago. Absolutely mental........edit Peter Kennedy that's it

    I've owned a few MK3 Capris, and did a lot of work on them (I even put a 2.9 Granada engine and hybrid MT75 gearbox in one). Even after all these years I'm still so familiar with them that without checking I know that the factory speedo went up to 140, and that tacho isn't standard. I know that (As far as I can tell on my monitor) the car's painted in the Capri 280's "Brookland Green" [Edit - Yes, I now know it's mallard green. As I said below, on this cheepo monitor it looked close enough to Brooklands for me to assume...... You lot can stop telling me now. :D ], but it can't BE a Capri 280 because they didn't get released until a couple years after this car was registered. The front seats aren't standard, the rear seat backs look like they've been redone with less padding, and the front wheels are about 1.5 to 2" further back than usual ............. And it STILL took me a few seconds to notice that it had Sierra inner wings ! The level of workmanship I'm seeing is breath taking. 99% of it looks like it left Ford that way !
    It's sad that someone who could put this much skill into a project car is now gone, but to me, it's even sadder that the government's constant demonising of cars means few of the younger generations want to get involved in this amazing car modifying culture, preferring to lease a new bland standard car every 3 years, never do any spanner work on it themselves, and even going to the extent of calling out breakdown services when they get a flat tyre ! There's now a couple of generations who've predominantly never learn a whole slew of basic life skills that tinkering with cars taught so many of the folks before them. :(

      I believe it’s finished in Escort Cosworth Mallard green and those front seats look like Sapphire Cosworth Rouse Sport items 🤔
      This car always fascinated me, along with the 4x4 YB MK I Escort and Mondeo from a year or so prior.
      Colossal amounts of fabrication in both of those cars too.
      And funnily enough they were both green too.

      @@SANDSCORCHER Fair enough, As I said, It looks like Brookland green on this screen, but I know that colour balance isn't always that good on these cheap TFT monitors. :D
      Interesting you mentioning a MK1 Cosworth swapped escort though. About 20 to 25 years ago I was offered a MK1 track day car with a YB engine, narrowed 2.8 LSD axle, pretty new Bilstein's all around, and lots of other really nice kit on it. The price wasn't too bad either because it needed both cill's replacing. the engine sounded sweet, and it was REALLY quick. At the time I had a 2.1 Capri Laser project car, and didn't have anywhere to put another car, so I passed it up. I've kicked myself for not getting that ever since, and when I saw this Capri's engine bay in this video it got me thinking about this one that got away again. :(

      Those clocks are out of the donor Sierra Cosworth by the looks of it, along with the seats. The clocks must have been shaped to fit the Capri's round binnacles.

      It's coachwork is Ford Mallard green, a Cosworth only colour, not Brookland green. , says it clearly on the tags shown in the video. Clocks are Sierra Cosworth 4x4, it goes past 170mph, seats are custom. Rear feats and door cards are 280

    Remember years ago when i used to go to car cruises with my skyline r33 mate called lee from leeds. he had a mechanic mate over on moors on m62 he was called rusty he had a capri 4x4 cosworth powerd he built the car. he had a thunder saloon cosworth shell in his garage. He used to race in lots of events against other escort cosworths. Rusty the guy fitted me a uprated torque convertor for me in my supra. many years ago round about 2002 to 2003. Sad news to hear he passed away he was a very humble guy from the few times i have met the guy. will always remember his garage with the single hydrolic car lift that when he was working on the car would drop 2 inch. glad to have met the guy and salut his skills producing a iconic car. R.I.P rusty

    Im American, but i have family in Birmingham. In 2004 i was visiting my cousin and we watched that damn dvd 300 times. I couldn't believe it when i saw the thumbnail. Ive been telling my buddies here about that car for 20 years. Right on man. Respect.

    I remember this capri, nice to see it up on you tube, it was definitely around in mid 90s, he lived around Glossop area I believe, a friend of mine went out in. So he basically cut the front off (bulkhead forward) welded the Sierra front on and put the capri body panels back on.

    I can actually remember reading about this car in Max Power magazine all those years ago. I'd always loved the Capri, and seeing one with a Cosworth 4x4 conversion and finished in Mallard green, well it didn't get much better than that! I also remember being amazed at the amount of work and ingenuity that had gone into this build.

    Certainly is a beautiful looking car, I'm 59 years old now, how time fly's, I had 2 capris back in my younger days a 3 litre v6 then a 1.6 GL, both crackers to drive, i still like cars and done a project all on my own by converting a bmw e46 convertable into a m3 convertable, and it looks lovely, it kind of made me skip a heart beat when he said Rusty had passed away, as it makes me feel sad when a engineer like myself, has built a beautiful machine in his time only to pass away, anyway great film enjoyed the memory .

    Very nice, I’ve always had a soft spot for Capris since watching the 3.0s in the professionals back in the day! 550 bhp back in early 2000s was almost unheard of. What a weapon 👍

    I just want one, always loved Capris, this is the best one ever, we didn't see a lot of them downunder in Oz and my previous favourite was an RS3100 driven by A.J.Cant at Bathurst then restored to road going

    What an absolute credit to Rusty and the people looking after it today 👏 👏👏 back in the late 70s a mate had an old battered Morris 1000 that others would pull along side and take the P out of. What they didn't know it was powered by a V8 3500cc engine and he used to wave good by to them with a massive smile 🤣🤣

    What a lovely story. Not usually a capri lover but WOW this is something super special. The smile on your face says it all.
    I know exactly how you are feeling I found my late fathers series one rs turbo 20 years after he sold it. I was lucky enough to persuade the owner to sell it to me. It’s absolutely mint. I love it. You just can’t beat the old school fords. 👍

    Okay normally I'm long-winded but I'm going to try and be short and sweet. I'm a 46 year old American, who in the '80s found out about top gear, I had family stationed in Europe so they brought your all's magazines back home to us and we had the Capri in America. I always thought they were cool, when I saw this thing I wanted one. Years later video video games allowed me to create my dream where I didn't have the money in reality to do it. I told people about this car and the inspiration for it and people never believed that it existed when I told them, a few Brits that I've raced on the game knew about it but otherwise it was relatively unknown. Now I can share this story with my video game buddies who don't know about it. Thank you so much man for bringing back a very great memory of a very early inspiration for a car geek.

    I remember the clarkson video , and the max power magazine, this car was like a Unicorn it was rare and desired and talked about in hushed whispers by those that knew, I remember trying to tell people about this but before the web the only known public available stuff was the mag and vhs .... for 20 + years I searched the Web just for a picture , I had to settle for screen grabs etc , I would like to say r.i.p rusty he probably never knew the cult underground following that spread in the early days I was aware it was drag raced but could never get over to see it back.in the day , and to rusty and his freinds and the current owner I thank you for keeping a dream (as that's all it would ever be for me) alive and running. This car is a true gem and I hope that it continues to be around for the future and continues to inspire people and the current generations. And thanks for the video it made me smile and for a moment I remember being younger and thinking the first time I saw this (already a massive max power and fast car mag fan) I want that ..... I want thay over all else and Would deffinatly of lost my licence lmao

    I'm probably one of the first to MOT this car back when Rusty first built her approx. 1993/94.... if my memory is correct🤔 🤔.
    I was foreman at Rick Whyman's Saddleworth Motor Co Ford.
    I seem to remember it being a lighter metallic green post build ?
    However, could be wrong.
    Great guy Rusty, I couldn't believe he brought it in for me to look at it, he was super proud of it 😎🤟 Union Garage Mossley.
    York drag strip, there's another great memory..... first time I saw a Transit Cosworth built by a bike builder, I seem to remember to transport his bikes🤔🏍.

    Great job mate !! I had a Laser 1.6 in the 80s as couldn't afford a 2.8 injection, although that was the one I really wanted. A corporal colleague of mine had a black 2.8i when I was in the RAF, I was always jealous of Leroy "Blakey" Blake back then. I managed to blow my Capri up on the M40, Leroy came and saved me in his 2.8i, never forgotten that day !! Yours looks amazing.

    I doubt very much if this is now "the slowest car on the road"! As an owner of various Capris in the early 80s I appreciate WOO for the iconic car and unique build that it is. So inspiring. Want to look for another Capri now 😁👍👌😎

    Went to York raceway with a friend back in the day got to say I wasn’t really bothered about going but boy I’m so glad I did ! There was a cosworth capri that smashed everything it raced (obviously WOO) it stuck in my mind ever since that day it was stupid fast for the time i mean just WOW ! I couldn’t get my head round how that car left the line never seen a car move like it and I didn’t know that it was in a clarkson video or think I would ever see it again that car has been on my mind best part of 30 years , mate the impression that car left on me was insane I didn’t want a Ferrari I didn’t want a Porsche I wanted that capri and I’m so glad you have put it on you tube 👍🏽😎 just made my day !     This car is legendary. Love the video Beardy. Does anyone else here remember a black 5 door Sierra with a red drivers door and grey bonnet that used to do the rounds on the Oldham and Rochdale car scene. It had a 2.9 cosworth engine with a turbo technics and 4x4 conversion and was running well over 500hp. For a time it annihilated anything it went up against. Don’t know if Rusty worked on that car too? The owner wanted to buy my sapphire cossie shell but we couldn’t agree a price.

    A ford capri was the 1st car I drove. It was in the snow on a pub car park on a quiet evening it was like the waltzers at the fairground absolute amazing memory thank you for jogging that 1 as the person I was with is no longer here. Rest pops.

    Wow what a thing of beauty i remember seeing wow at york sw and it blew away the lot,I've always been a ford owner my first car was a capri 2.8 injection special in black it cost more to Insure than it did to buy to it,it total I've had 7 capri's including 2 280 brooklands,just love them proper cars you can't beat old school fords I'm in an st at the moment and I love it

    12 mins 34secs. The clocks are out of a sapphire cosworth but mounted in the capri housings. Absolutely love this car, first saw it at a max power event, clearing very fast, then it’s on Jeremy clarksons dvd. Always wondered what engine was in it, now I know, thanks so much for doing this video. RIP rusty

      But if its true to its original form, its gotta stay. Plus tbh I remember in the millennium everyone had a 4" Outward Rolled tip on their Ford so this is fairly subtle by Ford standards

    Great car, great video and an excellent salut to its creator Rusty. I was personally never into Capris and never thought of combining Sierra 4x4 technology and the Capri III’s definitely good looks. What a wonderful outcome! Now I’m reevaluating the Capri in my mind . . . but now it would have to be 4x4. Thanks for all the effort, cost and dedication you put into researching, planning and producing these very exceptional and for me sometimes inspirational videos.

    you keep saying it was built in the 2000s, it was actually built in the mid-90s, i remember talking to the owner at york dragway not long after he had built it

    My sister had an old one from 1986 which was basically a mustang with lock washers plus it was a convertible. It was a terrifying car. My bro used to sneak it out and race it on Gratiot and/or Woodward.

    Im a local lad and met rusty up at his unit as my old boss was building a 4 door saffy. Really nice bloke and very interesting. I to saw Woo in the back garden and couldn't believe it.
    He had a really nice xpack rally spec Sierra from memory.

    In 2022, a Capri with 550 Bhp will still shred just about anything on the road. It's far lighter than modern crap- circa 1250 kg- although this might be a little heavier due to the 4 x 4 set up. I own a modified Capri with 280 Bhp and 300 lb ft of torque. It's 2 Bhp per tonne down on an Aston V8 Vantage. I've driven a Vantage in anger on a track, and in a straight line at least, it felt no quicker than my Capri under acceleration. Rusty's Capri is in another league! Top speed? Forget 170 mph! Back in 1985, the Brimble Capri, which packed 285 Bhp (still exists!) was clocked using telemetry gear at MIRA at over 170 mph. The Curry motor's Swaymer Capri- 3.2 Janspeed Turbo produced 343 Bhp. That was clocked at MIRA at over 190 mph- it was still accelerating when the driver had to lift off due to the speed rating of the tyre having been exceeded. Depending on the gearing, Rusty's Capri would smash 200 Mph- no drama!
