Nolan was choking him because Mark is part of the reason why he’s become so sympathetic. As a viltrumite, he was taught to wipe out entire civilizations without a second thought. Despite this, he’s crying over the deaths of what he should view as an inferior species. From an average viltrumite perspective, that’s the equivalent of having a mental breakdown over stepping on an anthill

And to awnser your question, the reason why Nolan feels this way about these people when he did all that shit on Earth, is not because he sees something in them, is because of what he experienced on earth with Mark, Debbie, the senseless killing and then having to deal with it. That left a scar, and that's why he sees things differently now.

Exactly. Though it happened unintentionally, Nolan started to like the lifestyle of being a superhero and a husband. He got comfortable because it allowed him to know himself that he was not able to explore with his own people because those kinds of bonds and emotions have no place in the Viltrum Empire.

I think this plot decision is just great. Showing an alien race that only lives for one Earth year gives us a better idea of how Nolan saw humans. "Now or in 50 years when he's old. What difference does it make?" in episode 8 of the first season seemed so absurd, but seems almost understandable compared to the corresponding few months for the alien race on Thraxa. It actually shows us how trivially short the time Nolan spent on Earth was and how short he thinks the human lifespan is and what he meant by pet. People love their hamsters, even though they rarely live more than two years.

You can definitely see every point Mark had as they argued, but Mark wasn’t mature enough to realize what us is the viewer could; Nolan asking Mark for his help and begging him to help defend the Thraxans is the very first step in his redemption as a person. Given the stakes, in this series and world forgiveness would probably be a bit easier to obtain given the fact that Viltrum is a UNIVERSAL-level threat. Virtually no one in the series can even give the Viltrumites damage at all, so Nolan killing thousands on Earth would be a sin that everyone would be a lot more inclined to let him atone for instead of death. Execute Omni-Man for his crimes if you’d like but Viltrum is still coming regardless whether he’s around to fight them or not.

Viltrumites have the exact same range of emotions as humans. But, what with the way their society works, they are conditioned from a young age to only acknowledge ruthlessness and loyalty to the Empire. Nothing else.
We see in flashbacks that Nolan was still a little bit emotionally closed off when it came to Mark when he was a child, but he eventually started opening up and acknowledging the feelings that he had never been allowed to experience among his own people.

Not making excuses for Nolan, he did loved Debbie in his own twisted way. As he said, "I do love your mother, but she's more like a pet." In my life I was surrounded by cats, dogs, birds, hamsters, some of them I loved more than anything, but they were just a small part of my life, and even though I loved them very much, even though I cried when they died, I would always get another and they would quickly become just a distant, barely visible memory. In the comics Nolan’s intentions and motivations are made slightly clearer. After fighting Mark, Nolan knew he could never bring himself to deliver Earth into Viltrumites hands, he could never kill Mark. He found Thraxa by pure coincidence and they pretty much immediately made him their ruler due to his long life (lifespan obviously being very important in Thraxan culture). His plan was to give the Viltrumites Thraxa instead, as they had advanced tech and abundant mineral resources and he had already “conquered” the planet effectively. But he caught feelings for Andressa, had Oliver, and realized he couldn’t let the Viltrumites have Thraxa either because they’d kill him. He accidentally recreated the emotional stakes he’d had on Earth again, but he knew enough about his own feelings this time to make the better choice.

i THINK the reason Nolan feels this way about Thraxans is because of his experiences on earth. The concept of a hero must have been something alien to him. In his planet the weak were supposed to die and were viewed with disgust, so his time on earth got him a new perspective, working as a hero, saving the weak, getting praised and loved for it, he must have liked it. But on earth he was always on a mission, he was a soldier, he had a predetermined goal which got in the way. But the Thraxans were just a species he saved out of nowhere with no involvement with his goal, so he didnt have any conflict about personnal feelings vs Duty as a viltrumite.

I mean look at it from Nolan's point of view if you have empathy. He is struggling with his whole worldview. "How is this better?"
1st) Viltrumites are essentially as close to demigods in their universe. They live for THOUSANDS OF YEARS, have amazing physical physics defying abilities and superior tech. They then decide to explore space and find out that every single species they come across is short lived, weak and essentially living in the middle ages compared to the Viltrumites. Of course you would develope a superiority complex of epic proportions. But wait...
2nd) The culture he was born, indoctrinated and raised in is a culture that very recently decided to kill off all the weak of there society. Weak in all metrics, meaning if you had empathy or compassion for anything lesser than a Viltrumite you needed to go. So Nolan has never cared about anything but his mission he belived so deeply in because why would he not? This man was having a breakdown experiencing emotions he never knew he had. Because..
3rd) Nolan has lived for thousands of years by this point. I would probably guess like 2-4k but if it is any higher it proves the point even more. He was only on Earth for 20 years. 20 years compared to 2 thousands is quite small. Which is why I think most people take offensewhen he called Debbie a pet. I bet most see the pet comment as a dominant/submissive thing but I truly believe he meant it in terms of lifespans. There are people that truly love their pets like they are blood relatives but however when that pet dies, they will get another so they can have something to love and keep them company. They still love their pets with all their being.
Love and emotions are new to Nolan. Debbie really got through to him on an emotional level, and it has only been 20 years, which is like a 3 day weekend compared to us.

Nolan said Debbys a pet because of how long his life span is compared to hers, not cause he saw her as an actual pet.
All humans to Nolan would be like pets since we live far less longer than he does (viltrimites do)
I know he still truly loves debby & Mark & his time spent with them. That definitely wasn't meaningless.
But don't forget that this mans race removed their emotions long ago when they removed "the weak" from their society. So "emotions" were something Nolan and viltrimites aren't supposed to feel/have. But Deb changed the man, showed him what having emotions are, what love is.
But then yeah, ya boi Majorly back peddled, called his wife, the love of his life, a pet, then proceeded to slaughtered a whole bunch of people while beating up on his kid. Look.. Ain't nobody proud of that & generally you'd never forgive anyone for that, ever. But Nolan was just doing what he was quite literally bred to do. To change someone like that into a kind, caring, compassionate soul would be quite the impossible task.
One that debby succeeded in. But sadly for Nolan to truly change he had to do all those horrible things, one last time to realise that that sh!t ain't right. But hey.. everyone has their journey right??

For Viltrumites, compassion doesnt exist in their vocabulary. They had always been stronger so they saw no reason to care for anyone else.
The very idea of carring for someone else is so profoundly alien to them, they never ever once ever considered what it feels like.
Nolan alone was alienated to the point other Viltrumites looked at him with utter disgust.
Yeah, they thought he was like that "weird guy with weird kinks".
Nolan genuinly thought there was something mentally wrong with him, like an infection.

The reason for the Viltrumites views has to do with what caused the great purge and why they don't tolerate weakness anymore.

3:33 Yes, you should feel sorry for him because you is miss the most important fact and that is that Nolan is not a human being, the actual form of Viltrumite upbringing is lethal. Mark lost to Omni Man. If it had been another Viltrumite who tested his son in combat, he would have killed him right there because he is not worthy of being a Viltrumite. They have been following their culture for billions of years. Nolan is one of the first to take anothe way out in literally billions of years. Leaving the earth and sparing Mark's life, he was condemned to exile because his people see him as a traitor for not doing his holy job and his human family sees him as a monster for following their Viltrumite culture....
Literally, the hatred they have for Omni Man is unjustified, we have done worse things as a species... remember WW2, the cruel Japanese and the evil Germans? They were not born bad, they were turned into that.

This is exactly how Omni-Man said in season 1 after killing the pilot in episode 7. After Mark said: “YOU KILLED HIM” Nolan answered: “Now or in 50 years what difference does it’s make?” Then Mark replied “He’d have a life!”. We as humans live so munch longer than these bug people that’s it is comparable to how humans have only bug like lifespans compared to vultrumites. When you say (as a human): “why even bother saving these bug people since they would die next week anyway?” Then it’s make you understand how a vulturmite feels towards humans. Like these bugs to us humans are just insects, since they live “only a year “, as humans are just “insects “ to a vulturmite.

I really don't understand why people get so upset at that pet line. Do you not see how much people love their pets here? Honestly, most people love them a little too much, imo, and value them way more than other people even family members. So Nolan calling her a pet isn't pejorative, it's putting things in perspective. While she is important to him, she's not going to be a long term part of his life. She can't be his life partner, because their lives are too uneven. She's a speck. A very nice speck that he loves, but a speck, in the very, very, very long life he's lived.

The reason Nolan can feel something like compassion and a need to protect these bug people is precisely because of what he already did on Earth. Perhaps having done it and completed it would have weighed on his memory for a while, but trying and him not being able to do it is what weighs much more on him. You can also see how strict and restrictive the Viltrumite indoctrination is, everyone we have seen has had that contempt for life outside other Viltrumites but even among them, they had the absolute contempt for the lack of strength even within their own race. If you live in a society like that, you will naturally turn out like them, because if you don't, then you won't live. It can also be seen in the opposite way, Mark should be for them an enemy with opposite ideas, but he has Viltrumite DNA and for them, he demonstrated his strength to at least deserve that DNA. That's why he can live with another chance until he proves unable to serve the Viltrum Empire at all.

I’m pretty sure in the comic he was a semi-famous author who got big writing travel guides.

Hilarious. You really can't understand Nolans pov. He has been one way for thousands of years. Change is not immediate. Plus, who's to even say the 18 yr old is right?! They often aren't.
Even with all that he's been through, he still has relatively little life experience. Compared to Nolan, he has exactly none.
I mean in the prior episode he lost his virginity. Debbie's a pet because she was a useful cover. It wasn't until Mark hot his powers that he even thought of his mission. In the comics, Viltrumites are dying off. Single warriors of Nolans caliber are sent off to conquer and look for breeding worlds. Which when Mark got his powers, Nolan had found. But Mark is weak. As showcased by him constantly getting his ass handed to him.
In the comics, he's far stronger. He certainly gave a better showing there. He even explains the breeding situation. Mark gets to live because he survived by the skin of his teeth.
Get off the mothers they dont matter. Only pure Viltrumites or as close as matter. It's a breeding program. Smh, relax.

He was trying to stay disconnected from them. After Mark wouldn't join him and their fight, especially the flashback thing, he realized he did care and left Earth-and abandoned his mission in the process-making him a traitor and thus his depressed flight through space and near death by black hole.
