I was born in 1960 and gifted a early life of camping . My parents drove us across the USA in 1969 in a 1966 VW bus with a canvas sunroof top and windows on the roof . My parents slept in a pop tent while my older brother slept on a hand made box that was built by the previous owner . Absolutely the bottom of the barrel ! We had a blast and a trip I still enjoy such memories of . ct. To California and back ! Spent five years camping through Canada the east coast of America . Every summer . When these came out it was like "Holy Crap ! A/c and a toilet !plus a kitchen and all the comforts of a hotel room . So this is to me so amazing to see all the creature comforts that the rich people owned ! I'm so proud of your work along side of your dad ! Working side by side being the BEST PART ! I just wanted to send a respectful note of appreciation for this labor of love ! May the Lord bless you all and thanks again ! I A Loving This ! A faithful subscriber ! God Bless You All !

Definitely isolate those tanks. My wife was horribly burned and almost died when ours exploded while we were cooking in it from gasses that collected in the cabinets above the tanks. When the fumes hit the pilot light on the stove it went boom! Enjoying the build and hardly ever comment on things but I was hoping my comment and the work you did isolating those ranks will keep someone else from getting hurt. Stay safe and great build.

Warning!! Make sure you extend the top and sides of that water heater vent to actually vent outside. Right now, it looks short and the hot gases will vent up between the wall panel and the exterior wall. On a normal RV, the exterior wall typically is more vertical so that short little flange can direct those gases upward and out but the mesh on your water heater cover is too far away from the shroud. I hope you follow that. Other than that though...great work on this! Ive done 3 of these type of RV renos and they are pretty fun once your have the end result!

If you didn't install one, I highly recommend a LP detector with an auto LP shutoff solenoid, they are normally standard equipment in RVs and Boats. If theres a gas leak or something gets left on it will auto shut off the propane.

    • @jimamundsen7029

I would also route the propane hoses under the vehicle instead through that storage area. And bring it in the vehicle only where needed. Especially the high pressure for the outside connection. It just minimizes the chances of gas inside if there are any leaks. Also, leak gauge where when you shut off the propane, it checks if the system keeps the pressure.

I am the line voltage electrician on a project similar to this one, and I just got home from first power up of our inverter, and line voltage side testing. Our project is an Airstream trailer, full body off, interior redo / upgrade. At about 16 months so far, it has not been fast, but the lead designer / builder had some issues.
I can say until near the end, it never looks very good, then the panels start going on, and everything ties together. Great project guys, looking forward to the next video. One more thing, YES, sealing the tanks from the rest of the vehicle was necessary !!! Not even a debate. Glad you did it !

Love what you are doing so far, looking real good, however although I like the slid-outs for the gas bottles & batteries, think it would be prudent to make both slids lock in the closed position to stop them moving whilst the camper is in motion, them being able to hit the outer door,... xxxx

These motor homes are wicked awesome. I saw one fueling up at my local Servo (Gas Station) last year. Spoke to the owner about it and was amazed to find out how old it was. My first thought was that it was much newer maybe 1990's.
Have since found that there are no more than a handful in Australia. Yours is going to be an awesome resto mod. Love the use of the modern caravan for the upgrades, brilliant for DIY on a budget.

One thing you should really do is put some safety locks or stoppers on those sliders, 'cause inertia when turning right or even a jump could make them slide out and the only thing stopping them is that flimsy metal hatch/door from the original camper. Although I'd say the best and safest way to keep all that in check and also away from the weather (especially sun) is putting locks/stoppers and an inner panel, preferably weather-proofed, 'cause you don't want water over your batteries or too much heat on those propane tanks.
Great episode again. Cheers from Argentina!

Just one comment. It’s bad practice to pull work through a table saw. Especially when ripping 2x4s. If the saw kicks back (which is a real possibility when ripping), it will lift the workpiece and the saw blade will propel it backwards and any hand that trying to control it can, easily, be drawn into the blade in a fraction of a second.

This RV is looking BEAUTIFUL! Safety items, Your Slides for Propane & Battery, need a pin/bolt to stop the slides going out as you take corners. You need to protect the exterior outlet from rocks from the tire that is inches away. And I would run sealant around the Propane take 2 x 2 base, Propane is heaver than Air, it will not rise goes to the lowest point and awaits a spark/ would have been safer to place open metal mesh in this floor area( both slide and plywood floor of the RV. If you look at a RV there is open free air under the tanks. Those rental tanks are the weakest point in a propane system. And you really have no idea what the tank owner before you did to the tank valve Simply a wonderful project you are doing!

Coming along just great fellas. It sure will be much nicer and better made than new with all the new advances in materials and designs today. Can't wait to see your family off on vacation as it is always a thrill to use something you build with your hands and see it work/run.

Will be waiting for the next episode #10 expecting another lesson in motorhome restoration. The front wheel drive engine/transaxle and twin rear wheel suspension are masterpieces of engineering.

You need to find a way to positively lock those sliding trays for the batteries and propane.
Maybe a spring loaded pin that goes down through the shelves and into the bottom of the RV?
But whatever, you need something where they can't move on their own.

I would suggest that you should have a couple of Lithium Deep Cycle batteries for extra storage when you’re not connected to mains electricity.

It's nice to see an older RV like this get a little resto-mod action to make it usable and enjoyable for at least the next generation of RVers. Great job, love the build!

Be sure to put a lock on the slide out trays so they don’t self eject on a right turn.

You guys are doing an awesome job on this project. I have loved these GMC motorhomes for many years, although they are way to large for me to use personally. I have been driving and customizing regular size vans for 40+ years. Most of the things you have had to do to this machine are exactly like what I had to do to many vans over the years. I also like how you were able to reuse so much of the parts from the other camper you bought. Can't wait for more of your videos, keep up the great work.
