St Martins Battery

The battery was originally built between 1874 and 1877 sitting on an artificial terrace that was cut into the hillside.
It was armed with three 10” Rifle Muzzle Loaders.
By 1902 the battery was disarmed before seeing action again around 1940 being extensively remodelled and rearmed with three 6” guns for coastal defence.
The battery remained operational until 1944 before again being disarmed and abandoned.
