  • Camber Castle, also known formerly as Winchelsea Castle, is a 16th-century Device Fort, built King Henry VIII near Rye to protect the Sussex coast of England against French attack.
The first fortification on the site was a small, round artillery tower built between 1512 and 1514. Due to increasing tensions with France in 1539, Henry rethought his coastal defence plans with Camber Castle being rebuilt and extended over the following year under the direction of Stefan von Haschenperg. These works were considered unsatisfactory with remedial works being carried out between 1542 and 1543.
The finished castle initially was equipped with 28 brass and iron artillery guns and complimented by a garrison of 28 men and a captain. The castle possibly saw service in 1545 when a French fleet attacked the coast.
The castle remained in operational use until around 1637 when King Charles I closed it. With the start of the Civil War much of the castle was dismantled by Parliamentary forces to prevent its use by Royalists.
The castle is now under the care of English Heritage.
