  • Wanstone Farm HAA Battery known as D2 was started at the start of World War Two. Originally the guns were mobile being housed in temporary gun pits made of sandbags.
In 1940 four permanent concrete gun pits were constructed as well as a command post, two magazines and associated buildings. The buildings roofs were covered in tar and asphalt with the buildings also being painted in camouflage paint and covered in camouflage netting. On the morning of 14th June 1940 the static guns in the sandbag pits were replaced by guns in concrete pits, these guns were Vickers Armstrong 3.7inch Quick Firing guns. The change over took approximately two hours. The changeover came ten days after the Dunkirk Evacuations and in time to defend the skies during the Battle of Britain.
Between the 9th August to 25 November 1940, D2 fired a total of 4,970 3.7inch shells in 307 individual actions against enemy aircraft. This equates to approximately 46 rounds per day.
D2 became of less and less use towards the end of the war and was kept on care and maintenance status eventually being disbanded in the 1950s after the disbanding of AA command.
