  • Tilbury Fort, situated on the north bank of the River Thames in Essex, England, has a history dating back to the 16th century. The fort was initially constructed by King Henry VIII in the 16th century to defend against potential invasion and secure the approaches to London along the Thames.
Tilbury Fort gained historical prominence during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I. In 1588, as the Spanish Armada approached England, Elizabeth I delivered a famous speech to her troops at Tilbury, rallying them to defend the realm. Though the Armada was defeated by the English fleet, Tilbury Fort's role in preparations for potential conflict became a notable chapter in its history.
Over the centuries, Tilbury Fort underwent various modifications and upgrades to adapt to changing military needs. It played a role in the English Civil War during the 17th century and was further fortified in subsequent conflicts.
