In this video I give some tips on how to replace a drive belt, otherwise known as a serpentine belt, on an eighth generation Honda Civic. The routing for the drive belt on this Civic was changed by Honda per Service Bulletin 06-059. Replacing the drive belt is a good DIY project and can save some money. The exact vehicle in this video is a 2006 Honda Civic 1.8L EX Sedan. 2006-2011 Civics should be similar.

Unrelated, but can you please tell me how the cylinders are numbered on 8th gen honda? are they 1-4 from left to right looking down at the engine bay, or right to left?
I can't seem to find good information on this online, there seems to be alot of conflicting info, some say the closest to the serpentine belt number 1 and others say closest to the cam shaft and crankshaft sensor is number 1 and they or on opposite ends in these cars...
I want to know because I have some misfire codes and loss of power and want to know which coil I need to potentially replace. Thank you
2:34 If you look lower on the hood, closer to the bottom left part of the hood, there is actually another hole where you can put the hood stick in to prop it up. That hole allows you to put the hood up further than if you use the normal hole. Maybe that helps!

Thanks a lot! I got the new belt and after trying to fix it and realized it is longer than the old belt I returned it to the store. It has been a week and I’ve been to three different stores. I’m currently waiting for a special order from one of the stores. The new routing path explains it all. 👍

I just did this job on my 2010 Civic which had the new routing already. The old belt still looks great after almost 13 years and 120k miles and there are testimonies of owners changing them out over 150k miles! I installed a Bando brand belt part number 7PK2170 and it was the correct length. Couple pointers. On the rearmost "pulley" I used a mini clip to hold the belt in place. My son held the the tensioner while I slipped the belt over the air condition pulley which by the way does not have the ridges that keep the belt in place. So make this the last pulley to slip on the belt. I removed the right wheel and the panel behind it to expose the area for a better visual. I used two spanners to aid in leverage. If the 19mm spanner is an offset type then it is still necessary to prop up the hood with a broom stick or similar. The most challenging part though was pushing the belt over the ac pulley. Small hands help. Finally before starting the engine double check the routing and more importantly that the belt is within the recesses .Cheers
Mine is at 155k miles and hasn't been changed as far as I know, but the tensioner has recently gone so I'll be doing it soon

Just replaced this belt on 2009 with 188,000 miles. The original belt still looked good. It was a pain to replace. New belt would not go over the alternator until I had some one hold it in the groves on the bottom two pulleys, then it went right on. used a piece of romex wire to route the belt up through the middle of the pulleys, worked great.

I have a 2008 Honda Civic with 183,000 Mike's and never replaced the belt. Going to bring it in to do. Love the civics lol
Thank you I even had to search up a serpentine diagram. Lucky me, I found a long tree branch to reach the belt in the back and place it right. I used a 19mm standard gearwrench and a 17mm standard gearwrench to extend and be able to push the tension pully up to remove the old and set the new one in. I'll post pics on Twitter and post a video on my CZcams soon.

Love the end comment, I had the same issues when it was time to reinstalled the belt in my 2007 Honda Civic, after a long day at work, started it in the evening, the wife car, it was getting dark 🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬😰😤😤😢😭😨. So you are right take your time and do not rush it and remember the routing of the belt make a drawing, take pictures and remember to make sure as you said belt must be seated or else 😫.

Thank you so much sir for this video i went to 4 different stores and the dealer and nobody could explain why my old belt was shorter than the new one but it was to tight thatmy old belt broke my tensioner twice at this time im waiting for a special order belt but on my way back to the store to get the right belt once again Thank you sir ..

I did this today, having another person definitely makes things easier. I found it best to remove the wheel and use your hands to set the belt around pulley while another person from top gives you direction and helps with belt fishing…
Your the second guy who recommends that OTC belt tool. I think I'm falling behind. Good tip on pushing the tensioner slowly. I do throw a wrench once in a while. :)

I changed the idler pulley and got the part from autozone and for some reason now for the life of me i cant even get the belt on? Any thoughts?

How long can you drive without the serpentine? I need to move my car to the bottom lot of my building by Friday and the serpentine just broke tonight. I guess I'd have to get it out first. It's jammed and all you can smell is burning rubber. Well, when it was running you could.

When I bought the car, someone bypassed the AC compressor pulley, which mean the belt he used doesn't go over the AC pulley. Do you think that person used a part # Honda belt from another Civic which didn't had the AC?... I plan to repair the air compressor next summer and replace the belt with the right one, but what if I need to replace the belt before I do the repair, I would need to figure out which one it is that I will need for that weird configuration..I would like to have your inside about it. Thanks.
Hey man, just replaced my tensioner but still hearing some squeaking sound. Kinda sound like a mouse talking if that makes sense. Do u think its the belt that's causing the sound?
There’s a second hole in the back of the bonnet or hood to have it open wider for servicing. It’s near to the windscreen jets and will mean its more out of the way. I cursed and swore at mine as I only had a short spanner and could not get the tensioner far enough to slip the belt on. I will do the water pump side next time as the alternator is almost impossible. This engine is also in the frv or edix models.

Hey man great video. Replaced my belt and followed the new routing diagram. When I have the tension all the way off the tensioner the belt is about a 1/4 inch or less short. I’ve checked the routing multiple times. Any ideas?

Most plastic clips that hold trim pieces and wiring etc can be reused but a lot of them break pretty easily when removed. Thanks for the comment!

Hey Big Dog, why did the old belt needed to be replaced? preventative maintenance? My belt is 11 years old on my 2006 EX Sedan. It's still fine at 164k although I'm thinking about replacing it now to have no future issues. Mine is brown and glazed.
Yes, preventative maintenance. It will break eventually and usually at the most inopportune time.

Hello Dave, thanks for sharing however in my case. The belt keeps getting cut each time I change it. Have changed the tensioner several times still keeps cutting. Kinda tired right now
If any of the pulleys are out of alignment that can happen.

There is a second little slot for the hood brace on the very bottom. It pushes the hood straight up and out of the way for servicing.

Sometimes that can help make it easier.
There's actually another prop rod hold closer to the windshield for this reason.

routing recall was gor cars made in America not Canada...I had this issue as well....that part number is or canadian cars...route it the same way guys...no belt recall for canadian 06 civics just for American 06 civics

I got an 07 Honda Civic while my 07 335 is taking a break off the road until I can find time out of college to fix it myself. I got a Honda because they’re reliable and “EASY TO WORK ON”…….
the only problem is THE DAMN BELT😐 0 space to work on it (with normal tools). That belt was nothing but skipping, causing my battery light to turn on mid turn losing power steering, squealing, the whole nine yards. My radio doesn’t even get enough power because it’s skipping so bad. Also the damn radio SKIPS EVERY STATION, and FROM AM TO FM ON ITS OWN DUE TO THE THIS DAAAYUM BELT. Whoever designed the serpentine belt placement wasn’t the smartest. The one on my bmw is in the front of the engine instead of being at a side angle.
I’m now finally tackling this to sell it and Jesus Christ this is a pain in my ass!
My Honda was the shittiest Honda to sight. idiot who owned the car before me decided to SPRAY PAINT almost the entire dash board WHILE THE PANELS WERE STILL IN THE DAMN CAR. Needless to say I had to replace every dash panel and the door panels.

I can officially rule out what isn’t the issue for you that I’ve done already.
I replaced my wire harness for the radio
Purchased & replaced the steering controls
Changed my serpentine belt
Replaced fuse and relays
Swapped oem head units and radios.
I’m going to be checking the alternator, amp, and grounds now.

Idk if you notice your hood has a 2nd whole where u can put your car stick so u wont have to get hurt nd the hood opens way higher then what u was trying to do
Yes some models have a second service location for the hood prop. It is hard to remember everything about each model when filming. Thanks for the input!

Seems like you know a lot about Honda civics. I heard a lot of 8th gen civics have cracked engine block problems, is that true? should I buy a 2008 civic ex coupe 140k miles on the R18 engine? or should I stay away
There were some early issues with that (casting problems from engine plant), most of those vehicle should have already been fixed or in the crusher. I would not hesitate to buy one of these Civics if I needed a car.

@Bulli Kid It might be wise for you to consider changing the belt on your Civic. Deterioration of the belt due to age is also a factor (in addition to the number of miles).
