The cultists' souls belong to Chaos for eternity even when they die.
Cults do come off as seemingly benevolent on the surface until they show the depths of evil.
Ascending to daemonhood after slaanesh watches me make my signature Irish Coffee with monster energy for water and cocaine instead of sugar.
I mean... Selling my soul to hell doesn't sound that pleasing, but let's hear ya.
A chaos cult trying to corrupt an imperial world and getting pissed when interfered by a Genestealer cult sounds like an awesome story.
Something else that often isn't mentioned is that life for your average Imperial citizen is so overwhelmingly oppressive, difficult and depressing, that Chaos Cults (at least from the outside) look like a distraction worth pursuing.
The honest truth is the life of a Chaos cultist is not at all worse than what most of the Imperium offers. For the poor and downtrodden it can actually be a path to otherwise unnatainable success.
No wonder the Inquisition has a creed of "There are no innocents, only the guilty ones."

Ah yes, an onion. A metaphor from Nurgle in his Ogre form. Great books to see this more nuanced and varied take on the "bad guys", at least for 40k, are the recent renegade books.
A video about blood pact or sons of sekk would be great.
