  • My boat wouldn't start after sitting in the back yard all winter but with a simple task of blowing air into the fuel line and into carburetor it cleared out the gook and now she runs great. . $0 :)

    That "filter" is the petrol pump. It's a diaphragm pump that does its job after the initial priming with the "ball" on the petrol hose. I have an Evinrude 9 1/2 HP almost identical to the Johnson.

    Just wanted to say that I have a 6hp Evinrude, 73 model, and sometimes it a pain to start. I took some of the advice around these forums and I did what many have said. I keep it inside a garage and only run clean fuel from the Co-Op with no ethanol but I hadn't started it in a few months. I took out that drain plug at the bottom of the carb, let everything drain, cleaned it up, replaced the plug, and pumped fresh fuel in and it started in about eight pulls. I ran it for about ten minutes in water to blow some new fuel through the system and it's great now. Thanks for the tips guys. The beauty of the old Sea Horse models is that you can still get almost any part for them.I also use that winter stabilizer for my fuel and made sure I kept my external fuel tank in the garage for the winter. Seemed to help. Duhhhh:)

      Have a 73 Johnson 6 hp myself , new plugs every yr , drain and flush the carb , keep it flushed every use afterwards and run all fuel as well as drain water out b4 storage . Preventive maintenance keep em good and running strong

    Do you and the motor a HUGE favor. Remove the fuel line before you pull the engine from the water. Start the motor and run all the gas out. This will solve 90% of all carburetor issues. PS do not do this without the water available. Even the ear muffs will work. I’m 70 and my father taught me this trick and it’s saved me tons of fuel problems.

    best motor ever, my grandpa bought this same motor in 1971 in Grand Rapids, MI. It's still my go to power for the mighty fishing boat.

    Nice vid thanks! Stuck float needle sounds like. I put a little marvel mystery oil in my stuff then run them for a bit (wave runners, snowmobiles, motorcycles) at the end of season. With a little marvel in the gas and carb it seems my stuck needle issues are no more. (of course GOOD gas is key, too!)

    Good job freeing up the float needle but please don't run the engine out of water like that....Running without water even for a few seconds can damage the rubber water pump impeller....

    Anything seasonal needs fuel stabilizer AND run it. A lot of people think they are doing right by using stabilizer but they don't run it afterward. If you don't run it all that fuel in the line and bowls is unstabilized old fuel next season

    @johnpower8356 Před 2 lety +1

    I see that to all the comments that warned you about the dry impeller you responded that it still pumps years later, dry rubber in a stainless sleeve damages it in seconds, one time I did my (2) impellers on a 27’ Searay and started the engine for a couple seconds on side the hose wasn’t on and did the job over not taking a chance put it this way it can’t help and telling people it still pumps years later sounds ridiculous, horrible working skills 🤷‍♀️

    yes if you let your engine run and get hot without water it can harm your engine.. but just starting it for a few seconds will not harm your engine

      WHATEVER YOUR NAME IS true, if you don't have the lower on. The impeller can burn up quick from friction but if u don't mind replacing it then it's fine

    Sir good vid thanks for the info... I have an issue and was wondering if u can help. I know this vid is kind of old but my recoil spring for the pull start snapped at the bottom of the casing how do I re-attach the spring? The entire casing looks attached to the carb as well and if I had to I would need to remove the carb in order to get down in there.. any help would be great thanks. Even if you can show me how the spring is attached at the bottom would be great..thanks for any response.

    Where did you get that motor? I had one the exact same year with the shifter broken off but not painted green. Often the quick fix solution that you have shown will work to unclog the carburetor.

    Great! I inherited a 6hp 1968 seahorse. Last week I got it out set it up in a bucket second pull started and ran great. Today I decided to do the same thing but I forgot to hook up the gas tank. It ran great till it used up the gas in the carb. I hooked up the gas tank and now only runs a for a min and only with the choke on? Any tips? Thanks.

    was the float bubble sticking? I'm having issue where gas won't go into carb. just stays in my intake lines.

    • @StarboundSound
      @StarboundSound  Před 7 lety +1

      calebfacosta yes, that is pretty much the case here, where the Ethanol in the fuel sits over the winter months and evaporates leaving a residue that cloggs the fuel float valve or makes it stick, so when the "light" air pressure presses some carb cleaner through the process it clears the old residue and allows the fuel to flow again as its intended. .. so i suggest the method in this video in combination with some carburetor cleaner spray in the line before you blow it through
