- What is consciousness? What is self-awareness? Find out when host Neil deGrasse Tyson and co-host Eugene Mirman welcome actress and neuroscientist Mayim Bialik of "The Big Bang Theory," neuroscientist and returning StarTalk Live! veteran Dr. Heather Berlin, comedian Michael Ian Black and actor Paul Rudd to the stage at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. The freewheeling discussion covers veganism and colonizing Mars, home schooling, behavior modification and genetic predisposition, Autism Spectrum disorders, waterboarding, and the socially unconventional characters on "The Big Bang Theory." And that’s just what happened before the group was joined onstage by surprise guest Bill Nye the Science Guy. Come back for Part 2 next Wednesday!

This was so good! If you haven't listened to it before, you're in for a real treat.
ftujkcbncjyr
Cool!
Everyone goes crazy for Bill Nye..... love that part. Great lineup this show.
"We are geeking out!" Indeed, and I love it!
Mayim you are extremely confident considering your company. Nice.
Maiyim's hair is enviable
Is one of the women Vegan? It was only mentioned briefly.
Luca James Yes. Mayim Bialik even wrote a cookbook, Mayim's Vegan Table.
Luca James i love how no one got the joke. holy FUCK she is annoying about it. the worst kind of vegan.
Luca James I don't think either is from the Vega constellation, but I don't know for sure.
Luca James If anyone anywhere is vegan, you will know.
Luca James don't think so, why u ask...u a vegan ? u trying to impose ur veganism onto the rest of us ?
Bill Nye is one of my favorites!!! I'm looking forward to watching part 2!!
Wow a video uploaded that's longer than 120 seconds. About time.
Doctor Tophat
not really. i follow this channel and they only upload like 2 videos every couple weeks and they are at the most 120 seconds long... its at the most lazy and at the least offensive to people that actually want to hear a discussion about science.
cr0nosphere Or you can go listen to the ACTUAL podcast. The CZcams videos are only to support, CZcams is not the main channel. Visit StarTalkRadio.net
Hundreds ...seriously... HUNDREDS of hours of podcasts and materials to review.
Social Media Hangout
fair enough although its not all that hard to cut the podcast up and just slap up a picture.
It could be because of CZcams's restrictions with music that they would avoid doing so - StarTalk frequently uses musical clips throughout their regular shows. With a limited budget, and a limited staff, they have a system in place that is as efficient as possible to get it out to as many people as possible - sure, we could always repurpose content even more, get it on every platform ever - but by controlling the platform, they can also control the message, better keep tabs on discussion, conversation, and sharing - there are certain benefits to keeping it simple, and treating certain channels like a funnel - a one way trip to where you want the audience to listen. People get intrigued with these short clips - and hopefully head to the site to listen to the entire show or past episodes.
Thank you Dr. Tyson for sharing this to the Internet community. Greetings from Canada!
Love the long videos of live shows. Keep them coming!
This was really nice to watch and informative. Bill does an awesome job at being the best scientific comedian if there is even such a thing.
About to watch, but I just wanted to thank StarTalk for putting up a video longer than 3 minutes, hopefully we get more like this..
I liked when Bill Nye walked up!
Who knew? Respect is still alive on this blue rock!
Thanks for bringing it into our homes.
YEEESS!!! a video that is longer then 2 minutes!!!! finally
Tyson is the answer to my prayers. My quest for the perfect human ends,
truly STILL the best star talk episode ever
I really enjoyed watching this!!
Can't wait for part 2!
I remember becoming self aware. I knew something was wrong, and yes, something WAS wrong. I am so glad I grew up, and could get away.
elaborate
I LOVE IT!! This is awesome
these live shows are the best! i wish i could go to one in person
oh wow my favorite comedians from Wet Hot Summer & my fave scientist. why am i only watching this now! this is amazing!!!! michael ian black is hilarious on this and on Bill Saves The World. thank you!!!
when is star talk coming to the Buffalo NY area? I love the show and the podcasts, but whould LOVE to see you all in person!!!!!
This is amazing. One of the best 44 min i've spent on youtube
there's two more 40 min parts
How have I not been watching this series??????
I love how you can easily tell which laughter is genuine from neil.
This is thee most amazing panel!
Mayim Bialik has something stuck to the heel of her shoe and it`s driving me nuts!
Miyam's story made me nostalgic about my TI-83... even though now I've got Wolfram Alpha.
I love how Neil walks back and forth on stage like a cool cat while all the guests where coming out lol what a line up 💛💚💙💖💖
What a kind gesture of humility and education,Neil De Grasse Tyson walks to shake hands with the second guy that entered the stage. He didn´t even say hello to one of the greatest minds of our time...hats off..
I think Mayim was giving her credentials becasue she wants people to see her for more than an actress on tbbt
I'm more impressed that she was a child actor on a hit TV show (Blossom) and actually turned out to be a very successful author and neuroscientist! Great on her!!
Whatever happened to Joey Lawrence anyway?
@@Hokie94CPA He did okay. For awhile he and the old Sabrina herself had a sitcom together.
"We are geeking out!"
Yessss
I was surprised at how chaotic it was. Some of the best ways of approaching the questions of consciousness and awareness, emotions, valence and the way human brain is capable of top-down processes that we call creativity.
None of the questions even got asked, I would recommend seeing Dan Dennett give a talk, or Eric Kandel. Usually this is a great podcast, but it went off the rails and there were no questions about the mind, brain, new research, attachment, epigenetics, learning and how we manage relationships which could be so interesting.
Please NeilDGT get experts, not just celebrities, we will all learn as you will learn new things and you will then give us so many new ways of thinking about it. Please do!
Can we have another one on Neuroscience with neuroscientists and people who do philosophy of mind.
Shocked this isnt at 30 million views.
Listening to the opening part of the show my brain made the connection between the son on Bob's Burgers and the voice of Eugene Mirman. I heard it clear as day and now after looking it up I deem myself correct. So, you know, since I did that I'm sort of better than the rest of you. .......or not. Just an attempt low level of mirth so don't think I'm serious about that.
Anyway I love listening to anything any show Neil deGrasse Tyson is on. He's funny, witty, and explains things in a simple workman type manner which I appreciate.
I love how as soon as everyone started wailing, I thought it was bill nye
I love the ticket prices, so affordable I can't wait to attend one of these, its so funny and astounding.
we are geeking out!!! YUSSS!!!!
During my brief (24hr =/-) coma, my wife said she spoke positive affirmations. I don't recall anything except waking up. I shouldn't have survived a couple surgeries. Everyone was led to think I had brain damage from the accident (motorcycle) and the coma (no 02 for more than four minutes). The first thing I'm told upon reviewing the MRIs (two) is that I shouldn't have been able to walk. Until age and heart issues, I walked for more than 15 years.
I'm very interested in what causes that loud sound during an MRI... I have some intuitive thoughts on it but I'd like to learn more.
The surprise bill nye tho
What!!! How have I never seem this, amazing.
It was an awesome show! -Ben, Video Producer
This is amazing.
This was on the podcast on Jul 19, 2014. I knew it felt like déjà vu.
It got significantly better at 34:30
Poor Michael Black and Paul Rudd...they must feel so out-of-place but anyway, I heard this on the podcast weeks ago, so nice to finally see it.
Brenda Cuellar They contributed a lot of humor to it, they seemed to be having a great time. In fact it would have been boring without them.

That Heather Berlin though. Damn
I KNOW RIGHT!
ikr
she is hot and smart .. i got hots for her
Mirman has the best voice ever
Please mister Neil in Catalonia we need to see your programs!! can be possible!!??? I need my people to be aware of your wisdom!!! I want my people to learn from you Mr. Neil really...! :'(
i wish the audio ppl were a little better... :( they all have a headset mic and it seems half of them arent working. even the mics theyre HOLDING arent working...regardless! love it!
This was very entertaining, please do more of these shows. by the way, where is the rest of this?
Doctor Tophat thank you :)
Doctor Tophat *in the USA
It's BLOSSOM!!! :O
Holy shit i'm old D:
Nice to hear Mayim Bialik talking nerdy.
Tyler is awesome, incessantly lovable
"George Bush!" had me cracking up. Love this show
"A kid can learn french in a week on heroin. That's a reward!"
x'D
Awesome!.......Compelling & Hilarious
22:38 Neil Degrasse Tyson does an impression of Casey Affleck in Good Will Hunting lol
So Heather is a scientist.. and also very beautiful... perfection..
Lmao that opening with Paul Ruddlol what is with the double mics tho
My first calculator was a Toshiba RPN Scientific. Then got a TI-55, and finally a TI-84. Now the calculator lives on my phone so it's all good.
I need part 2
Judie Greer you can get Part 2 and 3 on the StarTalk podcast.
Judie Greer I need gay porn to live.
***** Lol. Ok thanks for letting me know.
Judie Greer
stop oppressing me
***** the Gaza Strip has a great Gay Pride parade you should go check it out.
gene Belcher doing intro is awesome
Whoa! It's Cecil Tunt!
Neils laugh is so great
31 minutes in, still no consciousness debate. Pretty great, tho.
bill got the pass ahahahahahah this was great
1. I’m an identical twin: you’re not the same person and, Niel, I know you know that lol
2. Consciousness is an incredibly complex finite state machine
3. Self aware isn’t like some barrier that animals can get to, it’s a lot more complex than that, and you can be self aware in a lot of ways. Most humans aren’t fully self aware lol
I can't believe this is somewhat niched... Simply put: Prime time entertainment :)
Nice
-see Bill Nye
- why cant i double like D,x
all I hear is gene from bob's burgers lmfao and I'm loving it hahahaha
This was ok but I wish StarTalk had more star talk.
Can we talk to ANYONE else but Bialik? I get that show is popular but can we talk about StarTalk and not Bialik and her show? Geez
I wonder why the footage was uploaded so late
omg as soon as I heard vegan I was out. I'm gonna start walking around with a sign on my head saying I'm NOT a vegan.. look at me!! I need some more details on this "phd" of hers
Just thinking that no one in that room knew that, that was ant man sitting on that stage 😄
so whats with the double mic thing?
I remember having lucid dreams when young. I would be dreaming of monsters and would call out "can I have a glass of water?" as a method of waking up, so I could get rid of the monsters. I think I still have them sometimes, but I value my sleep more than getting rid of an unpleasant dream, so I won't get out of bed to fully wake-up.
for anyone wondering "We" is not French for life :p
It is spelled oui and simply means yes
Maybe he was talking about 'Lui' magazine witch was published under the name 'Oui' in america and that was a pornographic magazine en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oui_(magazine)
@@guyhubert9121 vie means life maybe you misheard it
@@lingy69 You could very well be right, in that case he is probably referring to the magazine 'Science Vie'. When French or English are using each other language their accent can cause some misunderstanding.
No V? Denied!!
IMHO Basic statistics should be a compulsory part of all of the sciences.
My course at uni had like 4 maths subjects, and yet I had to research for myself the real purpose of the bell curve and its shape.
Dear Neil deGrasse Tyson,
Is it possible that the expansion of the universe can be explained by the push that light gives to objects in a vacuum, and so slowely accelerate everything appart from each other? And that gravity only holds together smaller parts of the universe like galaxys, because the reach of gravity is not as far as that of light? I hope someone can tell me if this is wrong or write because I dont have the knowledge to know if this might be possible.
greetings from
Sven Vogelaar
Neil if your reading this your my role model. Please let me know what classes I should take to be like you. Anything. I'm in high school btw.
English
Eli Sam MATH and physsics
Start with grammar.
No way! The episode where Neil says, "Why the Hell do we have to Sleep?"
why do they have two microphones?
Why doesn't this have over 10k comments???
Where's Brian Greene?
Gene Belcher, Johnny Bluejeans, Antman ,Blossom , the hottest professor of cognitive neuroscience ever, & Neil , just havin' a chat!!
I love how the sound guy gave them all two microphones and the one they're holding is off and useless but they try to use them anyways and they are supposedly scientists :)
Neil deGrasse Tyson has the most awkward entrances... with his half awkward bows. Lol
+David Friggy thats what one of the things that i like about him. He seems like a regular nerd who doesnt believe he is a star
He actually doesn't act the typical celebrity and that is to his credit.
Antman in the house.
pleasant surprise
Holy shit, is that Blossom??? She got a ph.d.??? Crazy shit. Great stuff.
#deadlaughing
also it is!!
wheres part 2. this is the age of instant gratification people. waiting went out with landlines.
Mayim is so beautiful :)
On the Red Planet Mars: It is rusty. As a vegan she can have walnuts and sunflower seeds and almonds and any kind of fruits
Go D&D!
