Today we’re exploring the language of one of the greatest empires that ever ruled - Khmer language, the official language of Cambodia and once the language of the mighty Khmer empire. Those were the guys who built Angkor Wat for example - the biggest temple complex in the world. With such a history, Khmer language doesn't lack interesting features!

I worked in Cambodia for seven years and eventually got good enough to give technical lectures in Khmer. The two hardest things about learning it are (1) the lack of a standardized system of transliteration, because even though you need to learn the writing system eventually, it's so hard that learning basic vocabulary and simple conversation directly in the Khmer script is super slow if you do not have a transliteration. There are multiple systems, none of which are great. and (2) all the subtly different vowel sounds - they take lots of practice. A French text for learning Khmer had great advice about getting all those vowels right - "la persistence vaut mieux que l'acharnement - very true, if you stick with it, the vowels will come eventually. The best books for learning, I think, are a series of books on the spoken and written language by Franklin Huffman, starting with "Modern Spoken Cambodian" and "Cambodian System of Writing and Beginning Reader" and continuing to more advanced anthologies of interesting Khmer texts with vocabulary and notes.

I learned some Thai a few years ago, a language which also has a complicated spelling system, and I found it was easier to just learn the spellings as they are without worrying why they happen to be that way (for example sometimes a vowel is written with its own character, other times just implied. There are many silent letters. And there are multiple ways of writing the same sounds. It's like when you learn French there are accents on some words eg «contrôle» but not on others... Still very complicated though!

For additional information as a native speaker:
Khmer doesn't have plural. You just need to tell the number of things or add the words like group, those, these...to the nouns or repeat the syllables. Example: Khmeng= kid/child ; Khmeng Khmeng = children.... So when you say Chkae Thom Thom, it means "big/large dogs (as in plural)" more than "large dog (as in emphasize the large) ".
Most vocabularies in Thai and Lao are derived from Khmer and Khmerized Sanskrit, and Khmerized Pali. That's how Thai and Lao got their Sanskrit and Pali influence words. That's the reason Khmer speakers can understand at least a bit of Thai and Lao without learning them.

Su Sdei and Namaste everyone, It is interesting that Khmer script shares many of the inherent order and sounds of the alphabet with the traditional Indian alphabets( we have currently about 22 official "native" ones which are born in India, leaving Latin and Perso-Arabic script, more scripts are to be made official in the coming years like Modi script for Marathi, Tigalari script for Tulu, Khudabadi script for Sindhi).
So, it would be very comparatively easy for us Indians to learn it since it's a simple abugida, rather than even Thai, which has tonal markings compounding the script.
The Khmer language sounds very full of consonant clusters and the script looks like royal Naga maidens, twisting in serpentine gaits. We Indians would love to see more historical dramas relating to our brotherly nations of Burma, Thailand, Laos, Indo-Malay and Khmer cultures. We all have beautiful histories, unique cultures and intangible heritage that we must cherish and be proud of.
May peace prevail in all realms.

That's a very interesting video, there are a few corrections over the words that I noticed:
For 09:01 it should be ឆ្កែធំ , you may unintentionally added an ា in between.
For: 09:13 It should be: ឆ្កែធំៗ
We don't write the same adjective twice, but we use this "ៗ" instead. "ៗ" (but for an exception: there is any word etc. that we write នានា)
    09:59, for the verb eat:
    First one: ស៊ី
    Second: ញុំា
These correction doesn't have any bad intention, we're learning something new so mistaken are there to be made.
Thank again for the interesting video about our language.

Thank you for making this video! I had requested a video on the Khmer language. It doesn’t get enough attention. Recently, I have been very interested in Cambodian Rock music, especially music by Sinn Sisamouth, Ros Serey Sothea, and Pen Ran. They were singers in the 1960s and early 1970s. If anyone is unfamiliar with their music, I would definitely recommend listening to it. There is a documentary about Cambodian Rock music called Don’t Think I’ve Forgotten. There is also a graphic novel about Ros Serey Sothea’s life that is being made currently. It’s called The Golden Voice. Again, thank you for the video, and I definitely recommend checking out some Cambodian Rock music.

Just a minor correction when you wrote the word large dog: it is written ឆ្កែធំ and not ឆ្កែាធំ both the symbols ែ (making roughly the sound ae) and ា (making the sound a) are dependent vowels and those two dependent vowels cannot be linked to the same consonant (in this case ឆ) at the same time. It’s a minor mistake and really doesn’t take away from the great video. As a Khmer person who likes to do a lot of research on the Khmer language I’m really happy with the video, awesome work.

I knew basically nothing about this language before watching this video. I find it interesting that a language can get so influenced by ones it's not related to, and it's good to learn that the root cause of a writing system seeming cumbersome is typically because the pronunciation heavily evolved and the spelling wasn't changed to accommodate. It's also surprising to hear an East/Southeast Asian language without tones that isn't Korean or Japanese.

Thank you so much for this wonderful video. As a native khmer speaker, I'm always in awe whenever I see foreigners speak this language. It is very hard for us to follow all the grammar rules due to a big array of irregularities. We have numerous ways of saying one thing. Like mentioned in the video, there are different ways to say "eat" and those words shown in the video is just a very small number lol.
