    The main upgrades for me are the addition of the presence and depth controls, the 2 masters as well as having separate gain and volume on the clean. The Two Notes stuff is great but I've had a Captor and CAB M for a while covering that part. But overall, I think I prefer the tone voicing of both channels on my Dynamis 7-40. I was half-way through the video for my previous comment and from what I hear, the D40's gain stops around where the 7-40 was on the blue dynamic setting. I use the red dynamic setting quite a lot more than the blue. The 7-40 also sounds a bit barkier in the mids to me which I love.
    Both are great amps and the D40 is a fantastic evolution of the original Dynamis 7-40 but I have no compulsion to get it as my 7-40 works perfectly for me as it is.
    I love the Revv sound! (I also have the G2 and G4 pedals).
    Thank you Shawn!

    Hi Shawn. Great sounds. Just wanted to mention the proximity effect of an R121 mic is +12dB at 100Hz 6" from the source. Maybe you could suggest this amp to Dan at TPS? He said he may get a Dumble-style amp this year, and it sounds like the D40 does Dumble and much more for much less than some over-rated boutique amps. Finally, I'd consider a pair of mil-spec Tung-Sol 7581A tubes next tube change. It's the tightest, smoothest, clearest 6L6 variant made, a lot like a good KT66, and should last very long. It's a 35W tube, so should be biased 10~15% higher than a 30W 6L6GC for the same crossover distortion reduction level.

  • @GCKelloch
    @GCKelloch Před 6 měsíci +1

    Assuming the Master Volumes are situated PPI, I'd think a lot more gain could be had by cranking the gain, tone stack and vol knobs with the boost engaged. It's not a modern "high gain" amp in the sense of substantial LP filtering applied to the lead channel, but the amount of gain available is likely more than you'd ever need.

    • @GCKelloch
      @GCKelloch Před 6 měsíci

      I'd also avoid running a boost into the amp if it does have a SS input stage. Could get yucky transistor clipping. I'd keep the signal from the guitar close to unity gain just as a precaution.

      @@orangerecords_studio My mistake. Not that I have a dog in the fight, but the point is you are comparing a near class A Britishy-voiced amp with a Class AB Fendery-voiced amp. I think the tone stack is also pre gain on the D40, whereas it's post gain on the Badger. That alone make big difference in harmonic content and tonality, but I don't see how you get a "VST" from this demo. I'd wager you, or anyone, couldn't tell a good VST amp sim from a real amp over studio monitors anyway. They are just too realistic now. Aliasing is at least inaudible, if not non-existent and they've all managed to include the all-important speaker/transformer/tube interaction so crucial to the feel. The only real hurdle left is speaker cab dynamics, which Two Notes and others somewhat emulate.

    Great demo and head. Is there a way to go out to Two passive speaker boxes? Would I use one XLR out? If not, I could probably just splice the speaker cable in parallel. It will cut the Ohms in half but there seems to be plenty of power on tap. With these quality components I don't think it would fry anything as long as I use the correct Ohms setting. These give plenty of options on the back. Cleanest would be to use an existing plug. Also, is the amp relatively quiet free from hum?

      Several of their amps may have a SS input stage. The following stages are tubes, and the A/D/A reverb path is configured parallel to the analog/tube path so whatever interaction between tube stages should be preserved. That might be the case with the D40, but a passive guitar pickup doesn't have enough power to drive the first gain stage into nonlinearity, so I don't see how it would really matter, as I think the passive tone stack wired as a cathode follower breaks the tube stage interactions anyway.

      There’s plenty of cross over when amp designs are aiming for the same ball park. But no all amps don’t sound the same. That’s like saying all guitars sound the same. For sure though it takes a good player to use different gear to their advantage for different tones and vibes. Most importantly for anyone liking to share the love for different gear it simply mixes things up to feed their inspiration 🙂
