    Wow! An absolutely excellent video (as always :D)! It seems like dragons play quite an important role on many of the planes. After watching this video for context, it will be very interesting to see the dragons that will appear in Kaldheim and the D&D set.
    I shouldn't be surprised, but it seems that the Dominarian elder dragons were the original (and originally only) commanders used in EDH. The dragons' influence has spread beyond just the lore of the game, I suppose.
    I'd like to second Mizu Black and request angels as the next creature type for the next study :) Thanks again for your awesome videos!

    Awesome video! The dragons in Arcavios IMO are more powerful and wise than those in Tarkir. They managed to stop the wars and build a way to solve conflicts through sports and education, while in Tarkir the war never stopped even when their Elder Dragons took the leadership of the clans.

    Does Ugin have a connection to the Kamigawa Dragon Spirits?

  • @JuniperHatesTwitterlikeHandles

    Dragons being red, and the "iconic" creature type for red no less, is one of the biggest mistakes in magic. They're very green, big powerful animals driven by instinct. They can be black/white, hoarding wealth and power. But red? The color of passion, emotion, and freedom? When do we see a dragon love? When do we see a dragon fight for the people that are close to them? When do we see a dragon as a liberator in opposition to a tyrannical authority? They just don't have any red in them, they're just red 'cuz fire. The color system of magic is a really cool bit of worldbuilding mixed with game mechanic, and it has a lot of potential, but it really falls disappointingly short of what it could be sometimes.

    • @GacLosen6556
      @GacLosen6556 Před 3 lety

      As a mono-red mage and a lover of dragons, I must disagree with you. The dragon is a symbol of freedom because it does what it wants, when it wants, and its motivations are usually simple. Compare that to the sphinxes, who seek knowledge, the demons, who seek more influence, the hydras, who seek survival, and the angels, who seek order.
      Dragons have been shown as fighting against oppressors across the multiverse, but they specifically target those who oppress them. Red is about freedom through action, but it's about individual freedom before freedom of a group. That's why so many of them enslave and oppress themselves. They don't do it because they enjoy it (though, some would), they do it because they want to be free from any annoyance from anything else that could threaten their freedom.
      You also stated that dragons act on instinct, and therefore should be green. But dragons are more intelligent than the average animal and don't rely purely on instinct. Their freedom is what matters most to them. And if you really want an example of dragons fighting an oppressor, look at the war of the spark. Sarkhan Vol and Ugin transported dragons from Tarkir to Ravnica to fight against Bolas, and Ugin was instrumental in sealing away Bolas. Dragons are the symbol for freedom in the multiverse of MTG, and that's why they're red.

    • @JuniperHatesTwitterlikeHandles
      @JuniperHatesTwitterlikeHandles Před 3 lety

      @@GacLosen6556 Honestly coming back to this comment a bit later, I don't think they should take dragons out of red by any means. I do think it would be cool though if dragons' red nature were explored more fully. The example you gave with ravnica isn't that.. unique, a lot of creatures were summoned to the war of the spark, and Ugin isn't red?
      Idk I dont feel like the thoughts of mono-red dragons are ever really explored that well. The only dragons we get to see talking about why they do what they do are elder dragons, the clan leaders of tarkir, niv mizzet, etc. While dragons as a whole are largely portrayed as big animals to kill. I mean the dragons of _Jund_ the plane (sub-plane?) of animal instinct and thoughtless, violent chaos, were hardly changed from regular dragons at all, they fit right in. Dragons are usually a lot more Jund than mono-red, they have the selfishness of black and the animalistic instincts usually characteristic of red-green more than mono-red.
      You could make the argument that they're actually very intelligent and do what they do to pursue freedom (even then they're still more red-black, as they don't seem to care about much outside themself) but we never actually _see_ that, it's just speculation. We _see_ them roar and breathe fire, and that's usually the extent of it.
