- 🥋 Welcome to The Jits Guy, The Middle East’s Premier Source of Jiu Jitsu & Talent🥋
OSS is one of the most frequently uttered phrases throughout martial arts but with very few practitioners truly understanding its meaning and philosophical value. There are other phrases you will hear, such as "OSU" that are derived from Kyokushin Karate and mean something totally different than "OSS".
In this meditation, I reflect on what OSS stands for, we do we say it, and the value it holds for martial artists.
Stay Sharp,
OSS

Why do you say OSS? or don't? Do you think we should keep it or get rid of it?
Keep it forever. Im tempted to start saying onegai shimasu
I feel like a fraud when I say it.
@@bobby9192 haha there’s no need to say it at all if you don’t want :)
Keep it foreverrrrrrr
Keep, it is deeper than us
"Do me the honor..." is my favorite interpretation. It is open ended, and therefore flexible to accommodate the context while retaining the foundational intent.
The phrase is just magical, like Asian shakespeare I love the meaning and it holds kind of depth that makes bjj into an artform. Beautiful!
I agree
Brilliant and to the point, Thank you for this. OSS!

Oneai shimasu
This could of been answered in literally 60 seconds
@@TopTechTrendsX that’s what white belts think after they learn a new technique and then 10 years later they understand why it takes so long 😜
Can I translate and dub this video into Portuguese and post it?
Sure, kindly give credits and enjoy 😊
Was I suppose to cry
Yes, it’s part of the process.
I cried too bro. This video was great!
Love this. But hardly anyone at my academy says this. Haha it’s inferred.
It got watered down and lost its meaning! But hopefully enough people watch this and realize there’s a lot more to it! Thanks Caleb! OSS !!
@@TheJitsGuy thank you for the content!
Osu.
oss is no abbreviation of anything, it is just a rude masculine expression made popular by the far-right wing and mob clans which spread karate in the west in the 60s and 70s.
never use it in front of japanese people unless you wanna look an uneducated idiot or a fascist, and absolutely never use it towards a sensei, a senpai or anyone who is higher than you in any social rank, that would be extremely rude.
when the class starts or you start training with a partner, just say "onegai shimasu"; and when the class is dismissed or you fnish training with your partner, just say "arigato gozaimashita".
The real answer: cuz ppl like cringe
Oss 😂
But do we find Asian philosophy cringe? Or is it our self-deprecating manner in the west that makes it cringe 🧐
I’m new to BJJ. But not Japanese. I studied it in college. But for some reason I have a hard time saying OSS. It feels forced. Feels idk…cringe? Maybe that will change. I’m only a 4 week white belt
@@OhYaSure It's definitely cringe. Having done both Judo and BJJ, I can tell you it isn't common practice. The "Oss" thing is from western instructors who picked it up from the Brazilians. And, if you ask them, they often cite Judo in Japan. But, if you go visit Japan, you will find that it's not really a thing and it's more prevalent in Karate than Judo. In Judo, "Kiai" is what you will hear. It isn't a word, so everyone expresses it differently.
We don’t say it. We won that war. We won’t quote the loser.
OSS!
