Sorry for your loss. My Patrick is a 15 year old Pomeranian and we’ve been true friends for a long time but he’s starting to slow down quite a bit and when the time comes it’s going to crush me. We’ll get to see our animal friends in the next life - there was a guy who went into shock on a Hospital bed and his heart stopped, he died and told the classic story of seeing the light as he floated above his body. He said that when he reached the light his favorite Dalmation from when he was a kid was waiting there for him along with his Grandmother. I have no doubt that when Pat’s time comes he’ll be headed to the same place we all go and I’ll get to see him again.

I can attest to Labs being insane when it comes to retrieving/detecting. My grandpa used to throw a rock in the river when we were camping and out lab would go out, dive to the bottom and bring it back. Family didn't believe it was the same rock, so he marked the rock and threw it in. Sure as shit he brought the marked rock back out of the river.

My first experience with a Malinois was at a self-defense class that a Navy SEAL always attended. I asked him to let her be "at ease" to play with me and my kids while he played fighting with the other students. After that, I knew my next dog had to be a Mal. My first memory in life is being on the kitchen floor with our dog, but no dog we ever had was as impressive as my Mal. Kali is the most loyal and intelligent dog I have ever seen. And that is saying a lot, since my mom had our dogs trained to run the 2 acre boundary when she told them, and would wipe their feet before entering the house. But Kali, my Mal, goes above and beyond training.
Don't get me wrong, she loves to be trained, and have a task. She needs a task liking hunting rats, or climbing ladders, or even snatching flies and moths in the house. But she does things that she was never taught, and I am convinced that if I or my kids walked into the pits of hell, she would not hesitate to follow. If there is danger or a shady person around, she picks them out, but is still the sweet pup that all the local business owners know by name because she is welcome anywhere she goes. If it wasn't for her, I don't think I would be alive right now. I have PTSD and she has endured my reactions and antics so much that I feel bad. She only wants to be with me, no matter what reaction I have or how bad my triggers get to me, she leans in. I never knew a human that would do that. That is why she gets organic pork from Whole Foods, and special meals just for her, because loyalty is priceless. And there is not a dog on the planet more loyal than a Mal.

Belgian Malinois are not for everyone. Most people find out the hard way. It's as if you gave someone speed, only with a Belgian there's no off button. They don't kick back and chill out. It's always, go go go for them. They're breed for work. And they're a disaster. They don't calm down and they're always hyper all day long every day even in old age, and some of them are very high strung. It's best this breed be left for law enforcement and Military. The reason why German shepherds aren't used is because, they're a heavier breed that's all but gone to the gutters in terms of breeding. Poor quality control over stock breeding in America and it cost more to ship working dogs from Europe. So they stick to Belgians.

Not getting bit unless you are a deadly force threat 'on some level', or significant threat.
Lot of room to move there.

Malinois < German Shepherd. They lack hardness but have tons of drive. GSDs have the toughness and size, but the size means less stamina and some lack drive. It's easier to add drive in a line than toughness. It's sad that Mals are becoming more popular.

You mentioned poodles I'm not a fan of them I'm a German Shepherd or Border Collie fan. However, the Standard Poodle is actually one of the smartest dogs on Earth. I have experience with them and you can see them thinking when you look at them. Impressively intelligent dogs.

Hiking NorCal and Southern Oregon I've run across multiple hidden grows. The most creative one had about 60 plants growing 10-30ft off the ground in the crooks of trees w/a buried gravity fed timed watering system supplied by a stream. The cartel growers are nowhere near that subtle and you can usually tell when you're in the vicinity of one.
