  • On November 20, 2021, K9 Officer Stone and his K9, Haywire, responded to a tracking request to locate a hit-and-run suspect who had pointed a firearm at bystanders. Officer Stone and Haywire joined a four-man SWAT team, comprised of Cpl Baldwin, Ofc Benesch, Ofc Buchmann, and Ofc Brasch, and began the search. This is video of what happened.

he said "stopa" (trace/track) , "k nohe"(heel) a "pusť"(release/leave it) which are all Slovak words (stopa is the same in Czech), I'm curious why he was saying so many Slovak words. Revír is also a Slovak word. maybe they're the same in Czech, I'm not sure about "k nohe" and "pusť" if Czech use those words, I would guess "k noze" but maybe they don't say it like that :D

The officers released the dog and then started addressing the camera crew. "We pursued the suspect until he abandoned the bike and for our safety we released the K9. We think the dog has him now." All the while there were painful screams of "GET HIM OFF ME! OW!" coming from the woods.

I just love k-9 videos, especially when the dog has a mind of his own. As a k-9 handler for 11 years, it's fun to watch the different personalities and training methods used. Haywire had a little rewarding time (which isn't great but if he keeps it minimal, it just adds to his personality). He even took a few taste tests of the water puddles as he passed (human cells will float and a good dog will use his nose and taste buds to follow a track or when searching water). And the best part was when his team-mate tried to call him off the subject and he was like, "No man, you come here." 😂

The amazing part is the more time in service, they refine their skills for maximum effectiveness; they're become more in sync with their partners, the K-9 seems to learn the quicker way of throwing the suspect off balance and maximum effective bite points. They are given the working skills, but they build on those as time goes on. When they nip at the target suspect, they nip 2 or 3 times and the nip that gets a strong reaction, then it hones in on it and clamps down on that area of the body (Hatwire was clamping harder with every resistance from that suspect).
They are amazing and smart. Good ole days. Haywire zero'd in but handler didn't right away, was a tad slow catcing on his partner had the suspect (maybe cold fingers not sensing the steady jiggle/tugging from the leash) at the other end of the leash. Great job to both Haywire and handler, stay safe y'all. Mil/leo ret.

But if there is resistance and the guy wants to shake it off, the dog will take a firmer grip and give hard bites, if the dog gets attacked they go full battle mode, bite hard, take second bites and shake the suspect. It can end very bad with deep bite wounds, broken bones, nerve damage, lost fingers etc. So the amount of resistance determines the amount of damage.

For Working Dogs, using a tug/ball as the reward, rather than food, is a must. More practice and work in the field will help, as he clearly loves the hunt!

Many years ago when I was a working, but starving college student, a crankster stole my car with his buddy. They led the police on a long high speed chase through residential neighborhoods, trashing my poor car in the process. When I was called to have the car towed, I say the thief lying face down on the ground. His pants were torn and he had a dog bite on his butt. The officer said the thief was told to hold still and not attempt to flee. The dog bit the thief when he tried to run away, so the thief gave up and stayed there. Although I had insurance, it wasn't enough to replace my car. I saved money for months, taking the bus to work and school, before I could afford to buy another car. However, it did give me some satisfaction to know that the K-9 unit had bitten the thief in the butt.

He's such a regular dog, which is awesome. I have an enormous admiration for working dogs, but I find it adorable that he is still distracted sometimes by toys or other dogs like any other doggie. I have also seen dogs whose life is their work, and who will do literally anything to get the job done, with no other priorities -- take a look sometime at a single border collie helping a single shepherd control *ten thousand* sheep for a perfect example of a work-obsessed dog. But I admit I think it's more fun to watch the ones who act more like very excited doggies who happen to be playing a useful-to-humans game with their nose.

They are highly instinctive which is what we want them for but their instincts don't always tell them to behave or workout a problem the same way we want it worked out. You can't really get mad at them for their innate override switch going off sometimes, but I get when you are on a time crunch in something crucial, you can't exactly let him adjust his over ride on his time. He's a good boy and did a really good job. I'm always thankful for when their want to please Mama is more powerful than their over ride switch. Good boy!

I mean K-9 unit dogs are technically officers😂tbh. You would even get charged for counts of shooting an officer if you shoot the dog which is great because dogs are risking their lives. Also their handlers are officers as well and spent time/came into the job with patrol or other units and switched over to handler I would presume. They are all officers of the law.

Be very interesting to hear why they do what, and all the ins and out of K9 /Officer training. I know one thing for sure, that dog is a handful. The man is getting a workout keeping up and holding on to that beast. They got it done.
